HOW TO BUILD A GARDEN SHED: LEAD AND GUTTER WORK FOR THE ROOF | Extension Build #20 | Build with A&E

  • Want to learn how to do the roof work for a garden shed? You're watching the right video! Will demonstrates how to lay the rubber for the gutter, as well as how to place the lead cover flashing under the coping stones. Our roofer recommends using a crowbar instead of a bolster to prevent any damage to the coping stones. He also demonstrates how to bend lead with timber. We have drone footage to show you the full process of how to build a roof for a garden shed! Watch for roofing tips, advice, and satisfying time lapses!
    P.S. Watch until the end for a teaser for the Shed Build's next installment! Enjoy.
    A huge thank you to our show sponsors, MKM Building Supplies. We highly recommend you check out their website for all your construction material needs!

    PLEASE NOTE: we’ll endeavour to answer questions and comments as soon as possible depending on work schedules.

    Another really helpful tutorial on lead work, my workshop roof doesn't seem such a daunting task now... But watching a skilled roofer demonstrate and then a landscaper giving it a go is two very different things!But thanks again, even understanding the processes properly gives me more confidence.

    What’s the roof made of please?

  • @puddytat62
    @puddytat62 4 роки тому

    Why do they use lead in UK? It lasts forever? I am guessing you don't get much snow seeing as that flashing is only one course high. Curious if the building authority has approved the raised extension. That slight roof pitch and the fact it is higher than the block wall to my mind will likely mean the water will not necessarily drip down into the trough but shoot off onto the neighbours property. Please follow up with another video.

    • @BuildWithAE
      @BuildWithAE  4 роки тому

      Hi Michael b,
      It's rare that we get a lot of snow in England, plus the area is well sheltered between the two buildings; so there will be very little snow on that roof.
      With regards to water in the neighbours garden; the area of the roof in which the pitch is greatest, falls beneath the coping stones, and so there is little, if any chance of water crossing the boundary. The section which is raised has such a low pitch, that the speed in which the water runs will be very slow. Because of this, and with the addition of a capillary drip section at the bottom of the roof panel, it's highly unlikely that water will breach the boundary.
      I hope this settles your concerns.
      Thanks for watching.
      All the best, John 😊

    • @puddytat62
      @puddytat62 4 роки тому

      @@BuildWithAE Must have missed the episode with the capillary edge. I've seen some YT horror stories about how some Londoners are digging down multiple levels in order to get every mm of space out of their property. Blocking streets and exposing neighbours to water damage in their efforts to build down not up so it is fascinating to see the extreme lengths people go to in order to maximize their living space inside and out. This reno seems well designed to offer more space without compromising the adjoining neighbour's property.

    Not to be negative, but is it only in Sweden that that your not aloud to use lead anymore 🙂?

    • @BuildWithAE
      @BuildWithAE  4 роки тому

      Hi Kristoffer Uutinen,
      Lead has been used in roofing for centuries, and research has shown that the main negative impact is on the person installing it. It has very little, if any environmental impact. However, I can understand why a country would choose to ban it, as it is a potentially harmful material, but it is totally legal and acceptable to use in the UK.
      Thanks for watching.

    If you have used 1.5mm plastic for the guttering, why then add lead?

    • @BuildWithAE
      @BuildWithAE  4 роки тому

      Hi P Cass,
      We used rubber in the gutter, which doesn't bond very well to brick. So the rubber was lapped up the timber wall plate, and then the lead was dressed over the top to form a watertight seal.
      I hope this helps.

      Hi Graham,
      We installed gutter hedgehogs along the whole gutter. These help to prevent debris blocking them and can be easily removed for cleaning.
      Hope this helps.
      All the best, John 😊

    how come you don,t use lead seal to point up? as recommended by lead association

    • @BuildWithAE
      @BuildWithAE  4 роки тому +1

      Hi Chris in certain locations I like to use mortar with lime but most of the time we do use Lead sealant thanks for watching all the best Tony 👍 have a awesome weekend

      Hi Chris,
      Providing that you use a sufficient amount of lead clips, and the pointing up is done correctly, there is no reason why a mortar mix cannot be used. It also provides a more aesthetically pleasing finish than lead seal.
      Thanks for watching.
      All the best, John 😊

      hi our local building control insist that we use lead seal but they might let you use much on listed building but prefer lead seal because lead association says so and we are a marine environment

    Take the coping stones off take the rubber on to the brick re bed the coping stones. No awkward rubber work no awkward lead work. Very neat though but unnecessary.

    I take that this is a gutter and is the rubber water friendly?

    • @BuildWithAE
      @BuildWithAE  3 роки тому

      It is indeed for the gutter, and the rubber used is roofing grade, so perfectly safe to use.
      Thanks for watching.
