      Thank you very much! I had to wear a bow tie to an occasion, and this video was of paramount help! I have one question, however. In your opinion, what do you think is a good relative size for the bow tie? I am worried about making it too big or too small for an upcoming wedding of great importance.

    • @Offshoreorganbuilder
      @Offshoreorganbuilder  10 років тому

      Esa Ahmad Although the length of a bow tie is not super-critical, there is, in fact, only one correct size for your own collar. At the perfect length, and when adjusted correctly, tied and tightened, both the bows (front and back) should have their fold lines *exactly* halfway across the body of the 'fish.'
      If the tie is too long, when you start, one or other of the bows will be folded in a place other than across the centre of the body. Also, you will find that you have too much material to work with as you are tightening and adjusting.
      If the tie is too short, again, one of the folds will be off-centre and you will be struggling to manipulate too little material. The whole thing will tend to be on the small side.
      In actual practice, there is some leeway. As long as the front bow (the one which shows) folds correctly, and you have enough material to tie the whole thing comfortably, it does not matter if the back bow is a bit 'off.,' as it cannot be seen.
      Thanks for your question, and have a great time at the wedding.

      Congratulations on mastering the technique. It's only a matter of practice.
      Weeks go by before I find the opportunity to wear a bow tie, but when I come to put one on, there is no problem at all in remembering how it's done, and this will be the case with anyone who ties a tie, day after day, for, say, 2 weeks.
      Good to hear of your success and thanks for writing in!

    Thank you so much! Yours is, without doubt, THE most thorough and easy to follow, step-by-step tutorial on how to tie a bow tie. Many others profess to be "the easy way" to do it, but they all leave certain aspects to guesswork! You leave absolutely no stone unturned and I congratulate you on not only clear VISUAL instructions, but clear SPOKEN instructions as well! Thanks to you, I'm now a dab-hand at it, and I've just referred my son to watch your video, as he's been struggling to do it for a while! Thanks again!

    This is the video that allowed me to finally get it. Having the video with reversed sides was massively helpful. The spoken explanations of each step are so much better. If you have no one available to teach you hands on, this is the next best thing.

      In the early days of this video, the odd person would say it was 'too slow' or some such tosh. They failed to grasp that, for a complete beginner, you have to go into detail, slowly enough to be understood.
      Congratulations on your success, and thanks for your input.

    You are the only person, in the dozen or so videos I've watched, who took the time to explain how to actually adjust the tie once you pull it through the hole. Thank you so much for this! It took me two and a half hours to learn how to tie it consistently but, thanks to your extremely patient, detailed, and informative explanation, I can now tie it pretty effortlessly. Thanks again, and cheers!

      Two and a half hours might seem like a long time, but in the general scheme of things, it is nothing. My first attempts (having to work on printed diagrams and instructions) took about two and a half weeks (!) before I sorted it out.

    Having gotten my first set of tie-able bow ties, I needed to learn how to tie them. I spent an hour looking and trying out different videos, yours was the first that had the missing bit of having the thumb in the correct position to form the loop. Thank you

    • @Offshoreorganbuilder
      @Offshoreorganbuilder  4 роки тому +7

      My pleasure!
      As far as I know, the trick with the thumb was my own idea, after I had spent almost 2 weeks trying to find out how to tie one of these things. Of course, it may well be that someone else thought of it first, and I have seen it appear in the odd video since this, rather old, presentation was first put on.
      I'm glad you found it useful, and thanks for the comment.

    I have just given myself a "refresher" course... This is a super, very clear video. I thought I'd mastered tying the bow tie two years ago, but 15 minutes before leaving for a function I was to attend, and was trying to tie my bow tie, my mind went blank, my fingers turned to spaghetti and I couldn't function. Cold sweat broke out as I went into melt down. I retrieved this amazing clip on my I-phone and had it tied in minutes...Thank You! My refresher today has been a complete success, I managed to tie it in one, then reproduced the result three more times to make sure! As a retired lecturer I really appreciate the clarity of the instruction in this video clip.Thank You.

    Over 1,360,000 watched this video in search of that elusive prize, the perfectly-tied bow tie. Judging from the comments, most succeeded, which is great news, and a decisive blow to that pretender, charlatan, and offence to the eye *the clip-on*!
    *Be gone*, crumpled jeans, ties at half-mast and shirts with the top button permanently undone. * Away* with images of young men, sprawled, with knees wide apart, clutching a glass of booze. *Banish* the 'designer stubble.' that pathetic excuse for being too lazy to shave in the mornings.
    Keep up the good work, spread the news and have a excellent, healthy, prosperous and smartly turned-out, 2015!

      Offshoreorganbuilder Good tutorial! I, too, have inveighed against the prevailing designer stubble, "Unmade Bed," Hipster-look now degrading what used to politely be called "dressing." Every time I see the obvious clip-ons that the odious now unabashedly sport, I half-expect them to use it to squirt at someone with a skein of water. Another prevailing offense is the use of a long black tie with a dinner suit/tux, turning it into a "funeral suit" (OK for kids or Hollywood types who can't tie a bow tie, but now middle-aged crisis men are adopting this hipster fad).

    • @Offshoreorganbuilder
      @Offshoreorganbuilder  9 років тому +1

      mikerossscuba You make some sound points. Perhaps we should also add to the list of activities to be banned as an offence to the eye: the bald man with a ring of hair, which he grows long and straggly (even with a pony-tail, if he can manage it), anyone with 'designer'-faded jeans, jeans themselves (unless needed as work clothes), anyone who presumes to tell another person that they cannot wear socks with sandals, "Because you just can't do that," anyone who cannot use, with confidence, the apostrophe 'S' (in this case, mandatory grammar lessons could be imposed, until the basics, at least, have been grasped) etc. etc. I can imagine a whole new website for the listing of such offences, together with suggested cures. Perhaps one already exists?
      Thanks for the interesting comment.

      Dryfee As you say, when I first put this video online, I had no idea it would prove so popular. The views have tailed off, now that Dr. Who no longer wears a bow tie, but they still keep coming at between 1,600 and 7,000 per day, depending on the day of the week, so it seems that what some regard as too long an explanation has its place.

    You Tube has 'hidden' about 3,500 of your comments, because, 'they are probably spam.' In addition, they have jumbled up all the comments, so that my replies do not necessarily appear after the comment to which I replied. So the whole thing now makes much less sense (if any!) The sheer arrogance of You Tube amazes me.

      Hope you had a great christmas and it will continue into the new year. I've been using your video for a couple of years now and it will be in use for a black tie event again tonight. Thank you for making this easy and me one of the only in the room that dares to tie (and untie at the end of the evening) their own bowtie.

      Alan Barclay-Devine Thanks for your good wishes, which I reciprocate(!)
      I'll be thinking of you, as you undo your bow-tie to the general admiration of the crowd. For anyone who makes a remark at this stage, the answer must surely be, "What?! You don't mean to say that you're still using one of those old *clip-ons*!")
      Have fun ...

    How can someone not like a “how to video” if the guy explains it well.. do you want him to tie it for you? Or are you upset that you can’t get it? Because if you don’t like his method, obviously you know how to tie a bow tie, so why are you even watching this? To be a critical troll?

    • @Offshoreorganbuilder
      @Offshoreorganbuilder  5 років тому +1

      Sadly, when commenting is possible for millions of people, you always get the cranks who think they will run down something which most people appreciate. It's a form of vandalism. For instance, I put on a tribute video for the friends and relatives of someone who had died. It had no narration, just a series of images with explanations, and of no interest to anyone who did not know the man. Predictably, it got a few 'dislikes' - a sad reflection on the people who pressed the 'thumbs down' option.
      Then again, there are the people with the attention span of a gnat, for whom 10 minutes of their life is just too long to spend watching something like this. I doubt if they will ever learn how to tie a bow tie, and that's their loss, of course.
      Thanks for the comment.

      Maybe because it's totally blurry?

    • @Offshoreorganbuilder
      @Offshoreorganbuilder  5 років тому

      @@hellbenderdesign The less-than-clear image is due to a rather poor camera, and the fact that this was a first attempt, made in one take, several years ago, when You Tube videos were not as easy to make and present in good quality.
      I have made one or two other videos on different subjects, and I think they all show clearer images than this one.
      I leave it up, because it is evidently helpful to many people.

    One of the best self-help videos I have ever watched. In about 30 minutes I have gone from novice to fairly decent bow-tier!

      30 minutes is pretty good going! Give it a little, gentle practice, and you'll soon become slick. (Thanks for your news!)

    FINALLY!!!! I watched soooo many videos and yours finally solved the mystery!!! Thank you for taking the time to explain the process in detail. I never thought I could do it but I just tied my first bow tie and it actually looks good!! Hopefully this is the first of many! Excellent work - THANK YOU!!!!!!

      I never tire of hearing this kind of comment(!) With slow and careful practice, you will soon be your own 'bow tie expert.'
      Congratulations on your breakthrough, and thanks for the contact.

    Description is very accurate. I've always had trouble but was able to muddle through. Watched this video and now I understand the process much much better! Thank you!

      Thanks for this response. I know just what you mean, when you write of 'muddling through.' It took me a full 2 weeks to master the basic tie tying technique (working it out from diagrams - hopeless!) I'm pleased to have helped explain the whole thing to you, rather better.

      I've never been called a legend before. (It's kinda nice!) Thanks for the compliment and the comment.

    Undoubtedly the best tutorial! What I had difficulties with doing it right. When everyone just showed what I could've learned from pictures, you actually teach the technique. Great video! Thank you!

      +Rafał Kuwik I'm afraid I have to agree with you; that most of the other videos on this topic give nothing like enough detail, and their explanations are inadequate. This is why I made this presentation in the first place.
      Congratulations and thanks for your feedback.

    This is the ONLY video that gets it right looking at it left to right, great production I now can do it ON MY OWN. Thank You Chris Cook

      The mirrored image is essential in these videos. It's no good showing someone how to tie a tie on somebody else, for instance.
      Well done for mastering this minor skill, and thanks for commenting.
      (Why not try the Ascot/cravat/ruche tie, now? ua-cam.com/video/RPZtlWCuxFI/v-deo.html)

    I watched multiple videos trying to learn how to tie a bow tie. This was the only one that actually helped me figure it all out. Your small little tips make it very clear for beginners. Thanks!

      I'm glad you got it sorted out in the end. With a little practice, you'll find it is not at all difficult! (Thanks for your input.)

      Ah ... The first bow tie ... I remember it, well! It's good to know that you have got off to a good start. Well done, and thanks for your input.

    Tied a fair share of how ties myself over the last half dozen years; first learned from googling and instructional videos. But this one, I've found has the clearest instructions to keep a tie balanced and neat looking when you've finished. Smart little tricks to have a tidy, detailed (aka "sharp") knot at the end.

      Yes ... it's the finishing off which makes all the difference!
      Thanks for the comment, and I hope you go on to greater heights of perfection with the tie. (Remember, those who say, 'It's better, if it's not perfect,' or 'If it's too perfect, it looks like a pre-tied one,' are only losers who *can't* tie the thing, properly to save their lives!)
