Veteran resource investor and speculator Rick Rule of @RuleInvestmentMedia shares his latest thoughts on the mining sector, honing in on gold stocks, as well as the opportunity he sees in the silver, platinum, palladium and nickel markets.
"The intelligent application of capital in a bad market is always square one for building a bull market. I feel over a five year timeframe very attracted not to the gold-mining sector, which I think is a disaster ... but to some of the high-quality companies," he said.

Wow, what a magnificent human being Rick Rule is! He is great teacher , tremendous speaker and really drunk at the moment of the interview. Yet you can't see it on his face. Looks like the guy has live after all. Absolutely love him!!!
I have been hearing 2-3 years, 2-3 year, 2-3 years FOR THE LAST 20 years regarding mining stocks. I have done well with a few over that time, but overall not too good. At 68, I dont have many 2-3 years left!

Over the last 15 years I have listened to many experts (who have been in the business for a long time, tour mines, talk to management, etc) and invested in companies which were said to have excellent management, projects, economics, etc, and I'm down ~40%. Rick Rule is a smart guy, but he's also on the inside track, doing financings at low prices with warrants.

I am surprised Rick is surprised the US economy is so resilient. A 2trillion+ budget deficit explains this resilience.
The main factor is that the dollar is the reserve currency that allows the US gov to abuse that status

My strategy with gold stocks is to pick the most undervalued , well run, cost effective and trade them, no long term holds, just technical lifts and then exits.

In the Austrian School of Economics - coming to your opening statements about the economy - Von Mises wrote about the 'Crack Up Boom' or 'The Everything Bubble' - which is .... exactly what Charlotte describes and is indeed a good observation of where we are today in Western economies.
I appreciate Rick's commentary that mining firms are generally poor investments and very poor allocators of capital and this is causing a lack of trust with mining investors - such as myself. 'Drunken Sailors' is how the capital has been allocated.
But the royalty firms- which have grown quickly - have proven themselves very much otherwise...FNV, WPM, RGLD among many others. And Sovereigns know this - and that is why they keep stealing the mines [and filing nuisance tax audits] - like Cobre Panama, Kinross' Russian mine, Crystallex, Gabriel Resources and so on and so on.
My point? Government knows where in the end the real hard money sits, and the reoccurring thefts by the Sovereigns - are firm and clear evidence of this value confiscation.

gold goes up with inflation right. well what is your answer on every time inflation goes up gold is sold off.
Gold is undervalued historically. If we compare that in the 1980s it was around 800, but central banks are buying. Matt Pipenburg thinks 3000 isn't that far off.

Gold miners often produce copper in parallel. And vice versa. Barrick and Newmont both produce copper in addition to gold. And Freeport produced gold in addition to copper.

If you can't see the implications of 'the choice that's in front of us' for the people of (what's left of) this country, then you, Mr. Rule, are a sorry excuse for a human being.
I don't understand Rick's logic when he says the highest cost producers are better than the lowest cost producers.
Because when sale price increases it has a larger impact (increase) on the margins of the high cost producer. If you produce for 10 and sell for 12 then you have a 16% margin. If price increases to 18 then you have an 44% margin - your margin nearly tripled. If you produce for 6 and sell for 12 then you have a 50% margin. If prices rise to 18 then you have a 66% margin. Your margin increased by 33% . So the impact on the profitability of the higher cost producer is larger. The flip side is the higher cost producers suffers more in a price decline.

The strength of the US economy is mainly due to the huge share of government spending as a percentage of GDP. The strength is actually paving the way to huge devastation of the nation in general, and a potential debacle in the financial market.
