Working towards becoming a Utility of the Future - Case Study: The Gambia - Joe Dalton

The Water and Sewerage Business Unit of the National Water and Electricity Company of The Gambia has been undergoing a period of transformation. The World Bank developed Utility of the Future toolkit was used to undertake a diagnostic assessment of the utility water and sewerage operations. Based on the assessment, a short-term 100-days action plan was developed and implemented to ignite positive change. The 100-days implementation outcomes were combined with the assessment findings to develop a medium-term services strategy. While the first year following strategy approval saw modest improvement, the toolkit provided for utility accountability. The Utility of the Future toolkit has proved a most useful resource for the utility and has provided a framework for continuous improvement.
