Superb actor Yul Brynner plays the Gunfighter robot to perfection, in this amazing film.
Especially when you realise that he was actually suffering from severe back problems and needed help to climb onto his horse.

Westworld scared the crap out of me when I first saw it - the unstoppability of the Gunslinger was terrifying. One of my favourite 70s movies.

Magnificent Seven time. So much more helpful when you know the cinematic context.

I love all the movies directed by Michael Crichton. He really was a visionary as far as imagining how technology would progress.

Marie - Clare. There was a sequel `Futureworld` made three years later that answers many of your questions.

Impressive fire stunt work in this film and yes Marie-Clare, that was a real stuntman engulfed in real flames.
One of the most amazing fire stunt work can also be found in the 1951 horror sci-fi classic The Thing From Another World.

Seeing a stunt performer on fire is the one thing in movies that makes me feel uncomfortable. They must have so much faith in the people who work with them and the equipment they use to keep them safe.

Yul Brynner’s (the robot gunslinger) character here is a straight-up reference to his iconic role as a gun-for-hire in “The Magnificent Seven,” a top-five western in my book. I realize you don’t like westerns, but “Seven” actually was based on Kurosawa’s “Seven Samurai,” and the Old West (mostly Mexico, actually) is really just the backdrop for a tale with universal themes that I think you’d like.

For more fantastic film adaptations of Michael Crichton books, please check out Congo, Sphere, The Andromeda Strain and of course Jurassic Park.

Yul Brynner's gunslinger wearing the same outfit he had in The Magnificent Seven must count as one of cinema's earliest examples of a "meta" reference. Also makes perfect sense, as if a park like Westworld actually existed, you can guarantee there'd be robot versions of Yul, Clint Eastwood, John Wayne and a whole "host" of others (pun intended)..
I totally recommend season 1 of the Westworld show as a perfect standalone reimagining of the movie. Season 2 got a lot of flak for confusing time jumps, but I still liked it a great deal for the more existential questions it raised via some of the themes of the 1976 sequel Futureworld. Unfortunately seasons 3 & 4 left the park, lost the tight narrative structure and plotting, and the show was cancelled before it could squeeze in a final 5th season. Give season 1 a try, though. Genuinely some of the best TV made in the last ten years, and you can't go wrong with Anthony Hopkins either!

The Gunslinger was played by the late great Yul Brynner. Famous for the Magnificent Seven and the King & I, amongst others

Michael Crichton wrote and directed this and wrote Jurassic Park.
It's basically the exact same story but robots instead of dinosaurs in a theme park:)

I think this is where the whole freaky humanoid android trope in the 1970s started. I am too young for this the first time around, but the idea of the person who is really a robot (whose face tends to fall off) almost became a running gag, in everything from 'The Bionic Woman' to - yes - 'Doctor Who'. It's a stretch to lump this in with concerns about AI (there's a much better example of that in another, slightly earlier, movie) but I think it has something to say about how we use virtual worlds for entertainment. You really should have watched 'The Magnificent Seven' first, by the way...

In fact, I was just thinking about The Bionic Man and that scene... So, 'Woman' did it, too?

I've always thought it interesting (and scary) how its noted that they can't quite get the robots' hands right...just like current AI. A terrific movie!

There's a lot that is going on with AI right now that is following suit with how the sci-fi from yesteryear has made predictions. Why, in the movie Electric Dreams, Edgar is tasked to make music. His training? Advertising. And for the last month-plus, I've been utilizing this Udio AI. Trained off a lot more. But does it know how to make just about any type of music.

I swear that Yul Brynner as The Gunslinger was born for this role. He's just so good. And in some ways, it is hard to watch this film blind. Because it is such a classic in sci-fi and has inspired countless imitations throughout the years. Just makes any surprises it has feel so 'been there'.
Yes. There has been a show of the same name. (Never watched. Cable.)
As for your many questions asked at the end, may I make a recommendation: The sequel. It's called *Future World* . Not as fondly remembered. But very recommendable for watching. And it will give some answers.
How about a question of my own. If they were trying for some very risky safety... why would the snake have fangs?

The Romanworld scenes were shot in the Harold Lloyd Estate gardens. Most everything else (non-wide outdoorsy) was likely studio backlots.

Yul Brynner (the Gunslinger) was a superstar at this point and was a surprise choice for this role despite mirroring his role in the popular Western The Magnificent Seven. James Brolin is married to Legend Barbra Streisand. Moustache man turned up in lots of comedy roles following this somewhat serious role for him.
