I've no idea who you are or why this popped up as recommended. But I watched the full thing and some of your choices hit home with me and now I have to check out a couple of albums I missed. Thanks and Merry Christmas.
@@domrice8628 same, but i watched because i'm interested ! i would probably do the same with the vast majority of my selections from the 70's and maybe only a few outside of that decade !
Great job and I absolutely love that you're holding real albums in your hand as you do it. Miss the days of bringing home a new album and slitting the film to pull the record out and then on the turntable. Great memories.
My Favorite All-Time 20 Albums. This means they all have some special meaning to me. I'm following your rule --- no more than two "desert island albums" per group. Here goes: 20. Sticky Fingers (Rolling Stones) 19. Bad Company (Bad Company) 18. Crime of the Century (Supertramp) 17. Zebra (Zebra) 16. Who's Next (The Who) 15. Wish You Were Here (Pink Floyd) 14. Van Halen II (Van Halen) 13. Exit Stage Left (Rush) 12. The Stranger (Billy Joel) 11. The Cars (Cars) 10. Abbey Road (Beatles) 9. The Wall (Pink Floyd) 8. The Principle of Moments (Robert Plant) 7. 90125 (Yes) 6. Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap (AC/DC) 5. Diary of a Madman (Ozzy) 4. Piece of Mind (Iron Maiden) 3. Unleashed in the East (Judas Priest) 2. Led Zeppelin IV 1. Physical Graffiti (Led Zeppelin)
Sounds like this guy didn't start listening to rock until 1970. He missed many good ones: Sgt. Peppers, Led Zepplin I & II, Disraeli Gears (Cream), Jimi Hendrix Experience, King Crimson, etc.
@@inferneo Yes, I realize that. However, out of all of the great albums of the late 1960's, he doesn't mention one. That is why I said that he must not have been listening to rock until 1970.
It’s kind of hard to stop at 20, but my twenty would be (in no particular order): 1. Beatles-Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band 2. Beatles- The Beatles 3. Beatles- Let it be 4. Who- Who’s Next 5. Kinks- Lola vs. Powerman 6. Kinks- The Village Green Preservation Society 7. Led Zeppelin- In through the out door (yes, this album) 8. Led Zeppelin- Fourth Album/Runes album 9. Pink Floyd-The Wall 10. Pink Floyd- Animals 11. Pink Floyd- Dark Side of the Moon 🌚 12. Rolling Stones- Beggars Banquet 13. Rolling Stones- Let it Bleed 🩸 14. Supertramp- Breakfast in America 15. Bob Dylan- Blood on the tracks 16. John Lennon- Plastic Ono Band 17. Paul McCartney- Ram 18. Paul McCartney- Venus and Mars 19. Moody Blues- Days of future Passed 20. Van Morrison- Moondance 🌝 I could go on and on, but these would be my 20(!) albums if I could take twenty albums to an island.
You know, I dont think I could do much better. Or anyone for that reason. Very good. The moody blues made a great , greatest songs album in I believe 1973, fantastic. Also Tommy, and quadrquidia by the Who. Plus sublime had one great one, before leader overdosed. So many great ones.
I'm so glad you included a Badfinger album in your top 20 list. They were such an under rated band. I feel had they had better management, that wasn't out to rip them off, they would have ended being at least in the top 10 all time classic rock bands. In my opinion they were that good.
Well done for including ARRIVAL, it's a fantastic album. Anybody who says: I don't like ABBA, are liars. I rate them as high as your favourite band:The Beatles and I am an old rocker at heart. My favourite albums are: 1. U.F.O. - Lights Out 2.Blue Oyster Cult - Secret Treaties 3. E.L.O. - A new world record 4. Al Stewart - Year of the cat 5. Bob Dylan - Desire 6. Boz Scaggs - Silk Degrees 7. The Stranglers - IV Rattus Norvegicus 8. Horslips - Aliens 9. Rory Gallagher - Calling Card 10. Sparks - Big Beat 11. Hawkwind - Quark Strangeness and Charm 12. Pink Floyd - Wish you were here 13. Steely Dan - The Royal Scam 14. Jethro Tull - Stand Up 15. Supertramp - Crime of the century 16. Leonard Cohen - I'm your man 17. Television - Marquee Moon 18. Van Morrison - Veedon Fleece 19. Alice in Chains - Dirt 20. Echo & The Bunnymen - Siberia
Half through and added almost all selections into my streaming service. Haven’t heard around half of this bands. The only thing I didn’t get: how in the world “Ziggy Stardust...” didn’t make it to the main list?
When I clicked on this, I wondered why I'd be interested in what someone's Top Twenty GOAT Albums would be, but I stayed for the entire lineup. Stellar choices, many of which I have in my own collection - or have had at one time or another. Plus you gave me ideas for more to check out, as a fan of bands like Supertramp, Traffic and Badfinger. Thanks for sharing this, and for the "conversation"!
Tusk was always hard for me to get used to. I was 11 when it came out and it was a very hard album to listen to at that age. Although I immediate took to "Sara", "Think About Me", Tusk" and "Sisters Of The Moon" (my all-time favorite FM song). Around 2000 I began to get it and now, at the age of 50, I completely get it. Now in hindsight, Lindsey deserves much more praise for his work on this album. But, even still, the Stevie songs are some of her ultimate best outside of her solo career. That's just my pretentious take on it. Not that you asked. Thanks for the video. It helped me pull out some really great classics I've most recently forgotten.
So glad to see another fan of "Wish You Were Here," which is my number 1 favourite, followed by a toss-up of Pet Sounds, Odessey and Oracle, and a few others.
Necessary desert island picks for me: 1. White Album - Beatles 2. Quadrophenia - The Who 3. Spectrum- Billy Cobham 4. Plastic Ono Band - John Lennon 5. Thick as a Brick - Tull 6. Brain Salad Surgery - ELP 7 Ram - McCartney 8. Machine Head - Deep Purple 9. Between Nothingness & Eternity - Mahavishnu Orchestra 10. Todd Rundgren's Utopia 11. LA Woman - Doors 12. Blood on the Tracks - Dylan 13. In the Court of the Crimson King - King Crimson 14. Live at Fillmore East - Allman Brothers 15. Abbey Road - Beatles 16. Ricochet - Tangerine Dream 17. Band of Gypsys - Hendrix 18. Naturally - J.J. Cale 19. Hooker 'n Heat - John Lee Hooker/Canned Heat 20. Who Else? Jeff Beck
I enjoyed this tremendously. I’m 70yo now, and would not argue with any album you mentioned. A few I would add that, with your top 20 and your didn’t quite make the cut lists, would be quite a collection: My all time favorite Wish You Were Here, Dark Side Of The Moon (both by Floyd), What’s Going On? (Gaye), Band On The Run (Wings), Captured Angel (Fogleberg), Silk Degrees (Scaggs), Born To Run (Springsteen), and Neil Young’s first.
I gotta watch something while the worlds economy is crashing due to covid19. Good video. THanks for not rambling on for 10 mins on each album. A good 20 albums for sure!!!
I really liked this video. What a fabulous selection of albums here. I love the Beatles and all their solo stuff as well. London Town is such an underrated album, but I think it's a fine album. And I think everybody should have some ELO in their record collection. Jeff Lynne is a genius. Out Of The Blue is their best album IMO, although the follow up Discovery is a good one too. As for Stevie Wonder's Songs In The Key Of Life - a Motown masterpiece! What more can you say really?
You were in my recommended . So I watched the whole thing and we are much of a muchness . ELO is my favourite band of all time , glad to see one of those in there !
In no particular order except number 1. Literally none of these albums are super original choices for these lists but whatever. 10. Paranoid- Black Sabbath. The perfect metal album. Every song has a disturbing apocalyptic energy that to this day gives me chills. And planet caravan is criminally underrated 9. The River- Bruce Springsteen. The peak of songwriting in my opinion. I don’t know how such simple pop rock and folk songs can move me so much. The title track is a masterpiece of writing, Sherry Darling and Hungry Heart are some of the greatest pop songs ever (in my opinion) and Ramrod and Cadillac Ranch will sure as fuck get me rocking out 8. Dark side of the moon- Pink Floyd. Pretty basic but DAMN. This album interweaves all that makes us insane all with the amazing musicianship of all the members to create a perfect musical reflection on our world. 7. Van Halen - Van Halen. Fun, exciting rock and roll. Need I say more? 6. Velvet underground- VU and Nico. This album scared the shit out of me but I always found myself coming back. Now I can’t get enough! The dark sexuality in Venus in Furs, the pain present in Heroin or the delicate beauty in I’ll Be your mirror all come together with that unique, dirty yet amazing sound that I’ll never get bored of 5. Abbey Road- the Beatles. Excellent melodies and songwriting as to be expected from the Beatles with a twist. The proto-Metal of I want you she’s so heavy, the beauty of here comes the sun or whatever the hell “Because” is. It all comes together very well and is a quite rewarding listen. 4. Houses of the Holy - Led Zeppelin. As much as I love Zep II and IV I gotta go with HOTH. It has enough diversity to keep me occupied for many listens. The funk of The Crunge, the reggae of D’yer maker and the morbid mood found on No Quarter. And of course it has good rock and roll like on the Ocean or the song remains the same 3. Hot Rats - Frank Zappa. Jazz fusion doesn’t get better than this in my opinion. Every song is complex enough yet melodically accessible enough that anyone can get some enjoyment from it. Of course it all has that unique Zappa effect. 2.The rise and fall of ziggy stardust and the spiders from Mars - David Bowie. I cant even describe why I love this album so much. Every song is just great. Lady stardust is beautiful, Ziggy Stardust is a banger, Starman is a classic. ITS JUST AMAZING IDK WHAT TO SAY honorable mentions: Piece of Mind- Iron Maiden. Some of my favorite metal songs ever on this album, the power and energy of Iron Maiden is incredible throughout, featuring none other than the greatest metal singer of all time (in my opinion) Bruce Dickinson Who’s next- The Who. Some of the best rock songs ever on here. Including the criminally underrated the song is over. Great songwriting and performances. Highway 61 Revisited - Bob Dylan. Great songwriting. What else can I say? Kind of Blue- Miles Davis. Perfect Jazz with a laid back feel throughout. Every second is great, and only enhances the mood. Purple Rain - Prince excellent pop music. The title track is one of my top 5 favorite songs of all time. Blending funk, soul, and rock and Roll and its all amazing Moving Pictures - Rush. 3 of the most talented musicians on the planet come together and make some of the most exciting yet accessible prog you can find Pet Sounds - Beach Boys. Beautifully somber timbre throughout complements this record perfectly. The songs are pretty, catchy and memorable To pimp a butterfly - Kendrick Lamar. Not the biggest fan of rap but holy shit. Everything comes together perfectly on this album, the songs are fantastic and just.... YES Songs in the Key of Life - Stevie Wonder. Once again, excellent songwriting, summing up the beauty and pain of life with excellent variety all in one stunning package And my number one favorite album of all time is The Doors - The Doors. Where the fuck do I even begin. The drama and intensity all throughout the album making you wanna jump through the roof? Morrison’s morbid and powerful vocal and Manzareks flying keys? The Iconic solos of light my fire? Literally all of the song “The End” ? This album is perfect, every song is amazing in its own unique way. It’s my favorite of all time. Nothing but perfection.
dan cussin I honestly can’t get that into Physical Graffiti, I think it’s the most overrated Zep album and a lot of it is filler to me, and It has Kashmir which I find to be the most overrated Zep song. I love Down by the Seaside, the rover, and Bron yr aur however
@@pzhikcloethaegeslikhrethyi4225 Kashmir is great! It is rated highly and to my mind correctly so. The otherworldly (or probably more accurately Eastern) melodies just work so staggeringly well and they put together a long long song that to me never feels like it drags at all!
I discovered The Rise And Fall Of Ziggy when I was around 12 back in 76. I snagged it off my older sister. It gave me a life long fascination for all things Bowie . That album is my all-time # 1 album and I still have that very same album all these years later. Abbey Road would be # 2. # 3 all of Bowie's 70's work...# 4 and on depends on my mood but... Floyd's The Wall..... Gary Numan's….Pleasure Principle.....Stone's Exile on Main Street, The Clash London Calling, Supertramp's Crisis What Crisis album you showed is definitely up there as well. Anyway every album you showed is well worth it all of them I could totally see being on anyone's top 20
Wish You Were Here! That is in my Top 10! Anyway, I was wondering - it has been a little over 4 years since you put this list together. Has your Top 20 changed much? A Little? A lot? I haven't been brave enough to make a list. I must have 100 albums in my Top 20! :)
Love- forever changes Ramones- ramones Feelies- crazy rhytmns Soft Boys- underwater moonlight The Sound- from the lions mouth The Clash- london calling The Gun Club- the las vegas story Marvin Gaye- what's going on Television- marquee moon The Beach Boys- sunflower The Stooges- funhouse The Beatles- Abbey Road The Teardrop Explodes- kilimanjaro Bowie- ziggy stardust Dylan- blonde on blonde Wipers- youth of america Springsteen- darkness on the edge of town Pixies- surfer rosa Echo and the Bunnymen- heaven up here The Jam- sound affects (in no order)
Amen to your Soft Boys inclusion. I could make a whole list of top 20 with just Soft Boys and Robyn Hitchcock entries. Also gotta say, I second the Marquee Moon inclusion, the Feelies and Gun Club (I prefer the Gun Club's - Lucky Jim album or their album Mother Juno though). Have to check out The Sound....who others have let me know are fantastic!
It's funny how you had said that "One Way Or Another" was the album track and "Sunday Girl" was the single. Here in America, it was the opposite. As a matter of fact, all of your UK singles, except, of course, "Heart Of Glass" were not released here. But I was very pleased to see you including the album in your favorites but was surprised it rated high than ELO or Elton's Goodbye Yellow Brick Road. But I couldn't agree more, it is a perfect pop album.
Brilliant. I agree with so many. My heart melted when he said Badfinger. 2 Beatles albums and 4 solo Beatles albums! I was crossing my fingers for All Things Must Pass but my sweet George still got in. So happy he gave Ringo the nod! Abba was a surprise! Arrival was my fave Abba LP too. Yes FMac. Yes ACDC. Yes Supertramp and yay ELO!! I was actually waiting for a Cream album but yay Eric. I could ramble on but I _think_ I might have included Bat out Of Hell, Scary Monsters Or Hunky Dory, News of The World, and anything from The Who and Zeppelin. Too hard. Ps I love anything that included Steve Marriott.
@Dirk Diggler Funny Boogie Nights name. Itchycoo Park is my favourite funny clip. This is my fave Small Faces song. ua-cam.com/video/3rLF-QAS67I/v-deo.html

When you picked ‘Street Legal’ I was thinking what happened to ‘Blood on the Tracks’ , but I spoke much too soon. An excellent but a very personal collection.
Amazing that some people on here are whining on about your choices. To those people- The fine Gentleman is allowed to have his own taste and choices, that is after all the point of channels such as this. Not difficult to understand really! Nice video, I enjoyed watching it to see your personal choices👍
Quite right. Well said. I personally wouldn't have any Dylan or ac/dc near my collection but he does because it's his choice. I'm not going slag him off about it, it's up to him.
I know you are not talking to me but I was there at the debut of this Album with 18,000 others at Earls Court,West London in 1973. Ticket Price: £1.....lol
No words can adequately express my remorse regarding my inexcusable error. I am mortified that I got to make such a Schoolboy error and I only try to crave your forgiveness for my brief moment of total completeand utter insanity in making this mistake. I have no excuses and I can only apologise ,profusely, for my stupidity, once again. You are a good man for pointing this out to me. I'm inconsolable at the moment.....:(
I'm surprised not to see any of the Alan Parsons albums (considering your general taste as seen by your picks). Also I have serious trouble about your pick on the Pink Floyd catalog, and about not seeing any Led Zeppelin one (clearly not your style considering your general taste as seen by your picks). Happy about the pick of Out Of The Blue.
Our tastes run almost exactly in parallel...must be an age thing. Did you see Jeff Lynne's ELO on their latest UK tour? It was mind boggling. Love the Wings Over America inner illustration by Jeff Cummins, classic Dr Who book illustrator. I have not heard the Badfinger album you showed. Brave choice of London Town, I loved that album growing up. I saw Denny Laine live a few years ago and he played Delivery Your Children. Good list, you've inspired me to make a response video.
There is also Jack Kirby artwork in Wings Over America. Remember reading my comics while wearing down my dad's Wings Over America as a kid (first live album I listened to).
Nice list. We have similar taste in music. I would have found a way to get Ziggy Stardust into the 20 and for sure Astral Weeks but taking 2 out to achieve that would be difficult.
I really enjoyed this. I love Out of the Blue. Been listening lately to Breakfast in America. Good job for picking Stevie Wonder. I'd probably pick Talking Book but just about any Stevie is good. You have an eclectic taste in music. thank you for sharing.
I also have the Arrival, Parallel Lines and Out of the Blue albums. The ELO one still has the model kit in it too. There's a few in your favourites that I haven't listened to so thanks for the tips!
Actually that was said about S.O.S. Bjorn met Pete in an elevator in New York. They got to talking, and Pete commented that he thought S.O.S was the best written song ever. Bjorn commented then that it was nice to have bands like Led Zeppelin & the Who recognising ABBA.
Interesting list. Don't agree with all your choices but this is what makes these exercises so interesting. It makes me think about what my own list would be.
Stayed late at work to watch this video. Really enjoyed this one. Its personal, so can't disagree with any of your picks of course, except I would pick Crime of the Century over Crisis What Crisis. Crime of the Century production value always blew me away.
I think it can be objectively stated that the early to mid 1970’s was for some reason, the best period for quality music, in several genres, but especially progressive rock.
My Favorites (No Particular Order) To Pimp A Butterfly by Kendrick Lamar Dark Side of the Moon by Pink Floyd The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust by David Bowie Thriller by Michael Jackson Wish You Were Here by Pink Floyd Abbey Road by The Beatles Highway 61 Revisited by Bob Dylan The Velvet Underground and Nico by Nico and the Velvet Underground Purple Rain by Prince What's Going On by Marvin Gaye In the Court of the Crimson King by King Crimson Illmatic by Nas
Nothing wrong with John's list but yours is much more up my alley. The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust by David Bowie Wish You Were Here by Pink Floyd Abbey Road by The Beatles ( I prefer Let It Be ) The Velvet Underground and Nico by Nico and the Velvet Underground What's Going On by Marvin Gaye all need to be on my list. But I also need some: Nighthawks at the Diner - Tom Waits (and maybe Closing Time) Rickie Lee Jones - Rickie Lee Jones Marquee Moon - Television Everybody Knows This is Nowhere - Neil Young Physical Graffiti - Led Zeppelin (and a couple of Robert Plant's solo albums please) My Aim Is True - Elvis Costello (and/or This Year's Model) Coney Island Baby - Lou Reed Aja - Steely Dan (or Can't Buy a Thrill) Look Sharp! - Joe Jackson Propaganda - Sparks And must have at least one Frank Zappa album. Probably Apostrophe and/or Hot Rats.
I’m white and almost 50, but My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy by Kanye West has been in my top five for ages. Clearly I need to check out To Pimp A Butterfly; this is not the first list of otherwise classic rock albums I’ve seen it on.
I feel honoured Sir, thanks... because I own at least half of these - if I include a CD here or there! Thanks for this... brings back just how personal music can be... YES!! George is the ultimate... and I really enjoy how so many Brits made the list, Brits and Bob! The best!!

Hayley Nöelle Broders I’m 49 and appreciate most of your list. I think a lot more people my age would appreciate Ceremonials by Florence + The Machine if they weren’t completely stuck far in the past like the guy in this video is.
@@danieldaniels7571 thank you! While I don't think we should just call him stuck in the past for liking music from his formative years, I do agree that there is a contemporary edge to alot of the music I like that should span all ages. Ceremonials is an astoundingly beautiful collection of compositions that have aged phenomenally over the last decade. Much like a These New Puritans or Sufjan Stevens record, Florence's material has every right to be as highly regarded by me while still so young as it does my grandparents who are entering their 80s and love the vinyl pressings of C and High as Hope I got them for Christmas. I tried to diversify a lot of my list for mass appeal, those are all records I play often and have recommended to a bevy of people who have either grabbed on or let go. I'd be interested to know which other records you were favourable toward :)

Enjoy the vids John ..... as a long-time aficionado of Desert Island Discs, I can confirm that the castaways get 8 not 7 selections. They have to nominate just ONE from the batch, which they would choose to save from a massive wave washing the others away
“All Things Must Pass” would of been in my top 3, should have been, IMO in your top 5, also the BRILLIANT Marvin Gaye’s “What’s Goin On”. In my opinion the best concept album ever!!!
1. Led Zeppelin II 2. Abbey Road (The Beatles) 3. Led Zeppelin IV 4. Physical Graffiti (Led Zeppelin) 5. Master Of Reality (Black Sabbath) 6. Back In Black (AC/DC) 7. A Farewell To Kings (Rush) 8. BREAKFAST in AMERICA is a GREAT album! It even has the sound of the Coleco, hand held football game in the title track (or is it in "The Logical Song"?)!!! Anyway . . . that game sound was in a Supertramp song!
I"m glad that you included the George Harrison self titled album. That was an incredibly refreshing album to end the 70s decade. every song a keeper, especially "Here Comes The Moon." The opening few bars of that song feels like a dream sequence that I just want to repeat over and over.

Live At Leeds-The Who 25. Wish You Were Here-Pink Floyd
Half the medley on side 2 of Abbey Rd is John. He had at least a portion of Because and all of Sun King as I understand it. So two songs on side 1 and those mentioned on 2 shows an overlooked and equal contribution as Paul. That’s why the LLP is so great as a team effort
Because is completely by John, as is Sun King. That's well-known. There is a demo of him singing it with acoustic guitar. George in the David Wigg interview made a point of pointing that out knowing that, being a ballad, some people would mistake it for Paul's. I too get tired of hearing how the medley was virtually all Paul's work. Not so at all. Given 'The End' is just a fragment, and excepting that 'You Never Give Me Your Money' is a mini-medley in itself, the number of songs contributed by each is about the same. And where does the medley start? If it starts with Because, John is just about ahead. It's like the one about Paul dominating the later Beatles period. It's simply not true. Look at the Esher Demos just released: 15 by John, 7 by Paul, 5 by George. Go Johnny, Go! Stick that in your pipes of peace McCartney-philes!
Hard Days Night/Help/Rubber Soul/Revolver-beatles Live at Budokan/in color-cheap trick IV/III-led zep Goodbye Yellow Brick Road-Elton John Dark Side of the Moon-Pink Floyd Rumours-Fleetwood Mac Sounds of Silence /Bridge over troubled water-Simon and Garfunkel Aja-steely dan

Henry, guess what: 1. I like all the albums on your list. 2. Probably none of them would make my top 10 though, because I own so many albums. 3. But of your top 10, I like "Watertown" best!
Tom J: Although my favorite Sinatra albums overall are Watertown, the Jobim collaborations, some Capitol swinging material, and the moody sometimes thematic other Reprise albums, I like Trilogy a lot, especially the ambition and result of the unusual and diverse material in Future, which fascinated me.
Interesting reading the comments about everyone's choices , that's the great thing about music, we all have our own opinions and should respect every individuals own choices no matter if you agree with them or not. Just for the record, my top 3 are, hotel California, close to the edge and rust never sleeps.
My friends and I have played the 10 Albums for a Desert Isle- no compilations allowed! I found that I crossed genres horribly because I don't know what I will need to hear that day. My moods can swing depending on what I listen to. In no order, I would have to have The White Album by the Beatles, Welcome Back My Friends by ELP, Year Of The Cat by Al Stewart, Live At Leeds by The Who, Hot August Night by Neil Diamond, Audion by Synergy, On The Threshold Of A Dream by The Moody Blues, Songs From The Wood by Jethro Tull, Peace In Our Time by Big Country and Fragile by Yes. Are these my all-time favorites? No, but each of these takes me back to a pivotal time in my life, and when I need to raise my spirits these always do the trick, making me feel the positive feelings I felt back when that album was so important to me and has been forever linked to that moment.
not surprisingly as a fellow Beatlemaniac I have 8 of the 20 and a lot of the songs from your other choices. I agree with you wholeheartedly regarding "Blood on the Tracks" had that in the car for ages, although I personally would put Revolver top of any list. Another great vid , I've been catching up on a lot of yours this week.
in no particular order 1. Scarlet's Walk - Tori Amos 2. Unhalfbricking - Fairport Convention 3. Revolver - The Beatles 4. Abraxas - Santana 5. So Tonight That I Might See - Mazzy Star 6. John Heaton My pleasure and thank you for your insightful videos. I have very much enjoyed your reviews and general music chatter. You have earned this sub. All the best!
Nice list! Abbey Road is at the top of my list and the white album in my top 10. You've got 2 Beatles albums, 2 Bob Dylan albums and 1 Rolling Stones album on your Top 20. Then I'm suprised not a Kinks album has made you list. Let's say ´Face To Face´, 'Something Else', 'The Village Green Preservation Society' or 'Arthur' The album 'The Village Green Preservation Society' was released on the same day as the White album. Ray Davies wrote some great lyrics and melodies on them. For now my favourite of these 4.
Dark Side of the Moon, Led Zepplin I - IV, Yes - Fragile, Yes - Close to the Edge, Crosby Stills and Nash - Dejavu, The Wall, Santana - Arbrakas, Rush - 2112, Styx - Grand Illusion, The Cars, The Police, Steve Miller - Fly Like an Eagle, Van Halen 1 & 2, Heart - Dreamboat Annie, Pearl Jam, Tool
Blonde On Blonde/ Bringing It All Back Home/ Highway 61 Revisited/ Blood On the Tracks/ Pat Garrett & Billy The Kid ( still underrated BTW), Sticky Fingers/ The Dark side of the moon, I’ll start with these. Your top albums are great though!
My top 25. Beatles...Sargent Peppers Pink Floyd...The Pipper gates.. Pink Floyd...Animals Pink Floyd...The dark side of the moon Beatles... Revolver King Crimson...In the court... Milton Nascimento... Travessia Miles Davis...A kind of blue David Bowie...Aladdin Sane Prince...1999 Prince....Sign of times Focus....3 Led Zeppelin...4 Stevie Wonder....Innervisions Michael Jackson... Darn, I only got 19 of the albums in my CD collection (plus 4 of the ones that didn't make it). I guess I'll get the one missing, "Street Legal" some day. To be honest I only had the ABBA, ELO and Stevie Wonder - plus "Breakfast in America" - albums in my vinyl collection and bought the others on CD many years later. And maybe only two or three would be on my desert island list. But I think your list is very interesting with some unexpected picks even if all artists and groups are very well known (though I probably know many who doesn't know about Badfinger).
Led Zeppelin - 'IV' Beatles - 'Sgt. Pepper' Nirvana - 'Nevermind' Radiohead - 'Ok Computer' System Of A Down - 'Toxicity' Bowie - 'Ziggy Stardust And The Spiders From Mars' Iron Maiden: 'The Number Of The Beast'
@@VarsityAthlete04 oh I'm sorry I didn't satisfy your exquisite obscure taste, you fucking bellend. Let someone else have an opinion for God's sake. Basic social understanding, or didn't you go to fucking kindergarten
Man, I could just sit & talk about music with you for days;) Bowie & Dylan fan [do you collect the bootleg series?] my four fave solo artists (who I can't choose number 1 between) Dylan/Hendrix/Bowie/ & Prince ps: refreshing/interesting choice for fave George Harrison album, Blood On The Tracks my second fave Dylan album after Blonde On Blonde' can't believe how to me he did Blood On The Tracks vol 2 which is 'Time Out Of Mind, thx for another great vid
I've no idea who you are or why this popped up as recommended. But I watched the full thing and some of your choices hit home with me and now I have to check out a couple of albums I missed. Thanks and Merry Christmas.
smog 19880 same here just popped up now.never heard of this guy😆
@@domrice8628 same, but i watched because i'm interested ! i would probably do the same with the vast majority of my selections from the 70's and maybe only a few outside of that decade !
It’s weird, I try to branch out to other bands and music groups, but I always end up going back to the Beatles.
So what's weird about that?
Pat Brennan that does seem pretty odd actually. I like the Beatles too but that’s not the only thing I listen to
@@oriondurdaller3349 My brother listens an album 3 weeks and then never again. He only listens Pop, his taste sucks tbh.
Same for me but Pink Floyd lol
Warzone same for me haha
Great job and I absolutely love that you're holding real albums in your hand as you do it. Miss the days of bringing home a new album and slitting the film to pull the record out and then on the turntable. Great memories.
And reading the liner notes as you listened for the first time.
I still buy vinyl to this day. The last three gigs I've attended, I walked away with a few new LPs tucked under my arm. Nothing beats the LP format.
@@oig40203 Yeh, I read the circular notes on the disc label
Dark Side Of The Moon
It changed my young teen life. Forever.
Best album of 20th century
a great album, undoubtedly, but hardly in top 20
@@jumpingjflash there's no accounting for taste
@@enriqueernesto738 😉
I personally have the wall over dark side, but I would agree it could have easily been an honorable mention.
My Favorite All-Time 20 Albums. This means they all have some special meaning to me. I'm following your rule --- no more than two "desert island albums" per group. Here goes:
20. Sticky Fingers (Rolling Stones)
19. Bad Company (Bad Company)
18. Crime of the Century (Supertramp)
17. Zebra (Zebra)
16. Who's Next (The Who)
15. Wish You Were Here (Pink Floyd)
14. Van Halen II (Van Halen)
13. Exit Stage Left (Rush)
12. The Stranger (Billy Joel)
11. The Cars (Cars)
10. Abbey Road (Beatles)
9. The Wall (Pink Floyd)
8. The Principle of Moments (Robert Plant)
7. 90125 (Yes)
6. Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap (AC/DC)
5. Diary of a Madman (Ozzy)
4. Piece of Mind (Iron Maiden)
3. Unleashed in the East (Judas Priest)
2. Led Zeppelin IV
1. Physical Graffiti (Led Zeppelin)
you have litterally the exact same taste in music as me
Great list..
I love all of these albums but I would personally add Pet Sound and Deja Vu to this already amazing list.
I agree on both! - I would also add The Lamb or Selling England.
Fact's
Sounds like this guy didn't start listening to rock until 1970. He missed many good ones: Sgt. Peppers, Led Zepplin I & II, Disraeli Gears (Cream), Jimi Hendrix Experience, King Crimson, etc.
@@terryprater8115 you do realise these are just his favourite albums, right? Not necessarily a best albums ever list.
@@inferneo Yes, I realize that. However, out of all of the great albums of the late 1960's, he doesn't mention one. That is why I said that he must not have been listening to rock until 1970.
It’s kind of hard to stop at 20, but my twenty would be (in no particular order):
1. Beatles-Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band
2. Beatles- The Beatles
3. Beatles- Let it be
4. Who- Who’s Next
5. Kinks- Lola vs. Powerman
6. Kinks- The Village Green Preservation Society
7. Led Zeppelin- In through the out door (yes, this album)
8. Led Zeppelin- Fourth Album/Runes album
9. Pink Floyd-The Wall
10. Pink Floyd- Animals
11. Pink Floyd- Dark Side of the Moon 🌚
12. Rolling Stones- Beggars Banquet
13. Rolling Stones- Let it Bleed 🩸
14. Supertramp- Breakfast in America
15. Bob Dylan- Blood on the tracks
16. John Lennon- Plastic Ono Band
17. Paul McCartney- Ram
18. Paul McCartney- Venus and Mars
19. Moody Blues- Days of future Passed
20. Van Morrison- Moondance 🌝
I could go on and on, but these would be my 20(!) albums if I could take twenty albums to an island.
Awesome choices!!!👍😃
Total disrespect for metal
Not bad at all. I might add The Who Tommy, and quadraqfenia ( spelled wrong) . Really awesome records.
yet another list with no zappa or beefheart !
hard to ignore these two giants imo tho.....
My favourite albums are:
1. U.F.O. - Lights Out
2.Blue Oyster Cult - Secret Treaties
3. E.L.O. - A new world record
4. Al Stewart - Year of the cat
5. Bob Dylan - Desire
6. Boz Scaggs - Silk Degrees
7. The Stranglers - IV Rattus Norvegicus
8. Horslips - Aliens
9. Rory Gallagher - Calling Card
10. Sparks - Big Beat
11. Hawkwind - Quark Strangeness and Charm
12. Pink Floyd - Wish you were here
13. Steely Dan - The Royal Scam
14. Jethro Tull - Stand Up
15. Supertramp - Crime of the century
16. Leonard Cohen - I'm your man
17. Television - Marquee Moon
18. Van Morrison - Veedon Fleece
19. Alice in Chains - Dirt
Who Else? Jeff Beck
I don't know how I forgot Quadrophenia! Best rock opera ever recorded!!!
Do you even listen to any music that's been made in the last 20yrs?
Far better selection. I would have a few different albums Whos Next, Physical Graffiti. , But not bad
Very close to my choices. Glad you added the Who quadrophre. Tommy also is fantastic. Been revisiting that one. Quite brilliant for 20 year olds.
@@jts400hp no because it mostly sucks.
Oh, and Abandoned Luncheonette (Hall and Oats), Bridge of Sighs (Trower), Ole’ (ELO), Sailor (Miller), and The Pretender (Browne).
I gotta watch something while the worlds economy is crashing due to covid19. Good video. THanks for not rambling on for 10 mins on each album. A good 20 albums for sure!!!
In the Court if the Crimson King, a mention at least. Thanks for your excellent choices
Crimson were great Red for power rock
Best album cover ever...
"She's so heavy!!" is such a telling phrase. Such a telling song experience.
I want you from Abbey Road I love so Much!!
Wow! Glad to see Crisis? on your list. One of my all time favourite albums with great diversity and superb production.
And planet caravan is criminally underrated
9. The River- Bruce Springsteen. The peak of songwriting in my opinion. I don’t know how such simple pop rock and folk songs can move me so much. The title track is a masterpiece of writing, Sherry Darling and Hungry Heart are some of the greatest pop songs ever (in my opinion) and Ramrod and Cadillac Ranch will sure as fuck get me rocking out
The dark sexuality in Venus in Furs, the pain present in Heroin or the delicate beauty in I’ll Be your mirror all come together with that unique, dirty yet amazing sound that I’ll never get bored of
And of course it has good rock and roll like on the Ocean or the song remains the same
ITS JUST AMAZING IDK WHAT TO SAY
honorable mentions:
Piece of Mind- Iron Maiden. Some of my favorite metal songs ever on this album, the power and energy of Iron Maiden is incredible throughout, featuring none other than the greatest metal singer of all time (in my opinion) Bruce Dickinson
Who’s next- The Who.
Blending funk, soul, and rock and Roll and its all amazing
Moving Pictures - Rush. 3 of the most talented musicians on the planet come together and make some of the most exciting yet accessible prog you can find
Pet Sounds - Beach Boys. Beautifully somber timbre throughout complements this record perfectly. The songs are pretty, catchy and memorable
To pimp a butterfly - Kendrick Lamar. Not the biggest fan of rap but holy shit. Everything comes together perfectly on this album, the songs are fantastic and just.... YES
Songs in the Key of Life - Stevie Wonder. Once again, excellent songwriting, summing up the beauty and pain of life with excellent variety all in one stunning package
And my number one favorite album of all time is
The Doors - The Doors.
I prefer your list to the one above. Add Blondies album Parallel Lines.
You are bang on the money
Wish You Were Here! That is in my Top 10! Anyway, I was wondering - it has been a little over 4 years since you put this list together. Has your Top 20 changed much? A Little? A lot? I haven't been brave enough to make a list. I must have 100 albums in my Top 20! :)

JT Michaelson thanks JT!

When you picked ‘Street Legal’ I was thinking what happened to ‘Blood on the Tracks’ , but I spoke much too soon. An excellent but a very personal collection.
But no early Dylan?
Thank you for introducing abbey road by saying”their last recorded album”.
John knows his stuff !
Yup, Scott Joplin was a mega star back in the 70's.
Due, in no small part, to the popularity of 1973's top Oscar film, "The Sting". The whole soundtrack is Marvin Hamlisch doing Joplin songs.
Very heavy on the 1979 records. I think you have inspired me to my own top 20
Amazing that some people on here are whining on about your choices.
To those people- The fine Gentleman is allowed to have his own taste and choices, that is after all the point of channels such as this. Not difficult to understand really!

I'm inconsolable at the moment.....:(
"Band on the Run"
On a quad 8-track. Ah yeah...
So underrated
Get out of town
I'm surprised not to see any of the Alan Parsons albums (considering your general taste as seen by your picks). Also I have serious trouble about your pick on the Pink Floyd catalog, and about not seeing any Led Zeppelin one (clearly not your style considering your general taste as seen by your picks). Happy about the pick of Out Of The Blue.
I was so glad to see Blood on the tracks “ I to believe it Is Bobs best , Modern Times is great to.
Great list. Looking forward to checking sone of these out. Many of these albums I know nothing about …..so it’s exciting
James Griffiths thanks james
GL AnnapolisTeam thank you! A few people reckon i'm stuck in the '70s :- )
I also have the Arrival, Parallel Lines and Out of the Blue albums. The ELO one still has the model kit in it too. There's a few in your favourites that I haven't listened to so thanks for the tips!
As Pete Townsend once said Abba's Knowing Me...is one of the greatest pop singles ever!
...don't forget the 'H' in Pete Townshend....because, he's worth it....
He said that about Abba's song 'S.O.S.'
I had no idea he was a fan at all. I'm very happy now.
Actually that was said about S.O.S. Bjorn met Pete in an elevator in New York. They got to talking, and Pete commented that he thought S.O.S was the best written song ever. Bjorn commented then that it was nice to have bands like Led Zeppelin & the Who recognising ABBA.
Someone send this guy an H.
I am very appreciative of your commentaries, even though I wouldn't choose exactly the same top 20 as you. Glad I discovered you!
Hey john Beatles white album has been my favorite album for over 15 yrs
I haven't heard better nice list ✌️
thank you sir!
Supertramp - Crisis? What Crisis? is my favorite of theirs, too. I love all their stuff, but I keep coming back to this one.
John, thank you for your warm yet frank, sincere style. I wish you broadcast the news as well.
I think it can be objectively stated that the early to mid 1970’s was for some reason, the best period for quality music, in several genres, but especially progressive rock.
Yes actually the best decade was mid 60s - mid 70s
Thedude 404 : Must be incompetent, or know very little about music.
Thedude 404 : Research ProgArchives
@Thedude 404 Drop some names then to back that up. I can make up a very generic statement about anything saying the same thing.
@Thedude 404 Heard there was thing when making an alleged "factual" statement called backing it up with facts.
Two of your top 20 selections were recorded for the most part in Muscle Shoals, Alabama. Sticky Fingers and Rhymin' Simon. Gotta love The Swampers!
"A soft spot for . . ." = Welcome to Ear Heaven. We - each of us - can only determine what fits this bill. Thank you for sharing YOURS.

Wish You Were Here by Pink Floyd
Abbey Road by The Beatles ( I prefer Let It Be )
The Velvet Underground and Nico by Nico and the Velvet Underground

I’m white and almost 50, but My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy by Kanye West has been in my top five for ages. Clearly I need to check out To Pimp A Butterfly; this is not the first list of otherwise classic rock albums I’ve seen it on.
Daniel Daniels True man. Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy is a fantastic album
I feel honoured Sir, thanks... because I own at least half of these - if I include a CD here or there!
Thanks for this... brings back just how personal music can be... YES!! George is the ultimate... and I really enjoy how so many Brits made the list, Brits and Bob! The best!!

I'm 20 now and I've always leaned closer to songs over albums, but these are a handful of some that I never feel compelled to skip tracks on.
Someone has a weakness for double albums. I was kinda surprised he chose George Harrison instead of All Things Must Pass.
Me, too. Actually, any George
Harrison album.

Dark Side. Hmmm...can't imagine a list like this without it. That said, music from late 60s thru the 70s IS never to be challenged as best ever.
Animals over Dark Side all day long.
Humble Pie " Smokin"
Was just sitting here thinking which Pie album would be in my top 20, Smokin’ probably just edges it 👍🏻
Enjoy the vids John ..... as a long-time aficionado of Desert Island Discs, I can confirm that the castaways get 8 not 7 selections. They have to nominate just ONE from the batch, which they would choose to save from a massive wave washing the others away
ELO, yessss😍
“All Things Must Pass” would of been in my top 3, should have been, IMO in your top 5, also the BRILLIANT Marvin Gaye’s “What’s Goin On”. In my opinion the best concept album ever!!!

Joan Armatrading's self titled album such a diverse range to music styles all played brilliantly
Thanks. Don’t agree with everything but that’s what makes this a fun diversion.
BREAKFAST in AMERICA is a GREAT album! It even has the sound of the Coleco, hand held football game in the title track (or is it in "The Logical Song"?)!!!
Anyway . . . that game sound was in a Supertramp song!
Hmmm ... You had The White Album as your third favorite Beatle album and your number 1 all-time favorite?
millfred123 I change every day!
I"m glad that you included the George Harrison self titled album. That was an incredibly refreshing album to end the 70s decade. every song a keeper, especially "Here Comes The Moon." The opening few bars of that song feels like a dream sequence that I just want to repeat over and over.

Interesting choices! What about king crimson - red, yes - close to the edge?
The beatles are everywhere and everywhen

Henry Nurse thanks Henry...interesting choices
Henry, guess what:
1. I like all the albums on your list.
2. Probably none of them would make my top 10 though, because I own so many albums.
3. But of your top 10, I like "Watertown" best!
Tom J: I have those Sinatra albums, too; why do you struggle with Trilogy?
Tom J: Thank you, that is about what I think the critics said, too.
Agree with you regarding Street-Legal. Complex lyrics but also a really melodic album.
I agree with your view on Blondie it’s easily their best Album.
The Stranger Billy Joel
not surprisingly as a fellow Beatlemaniac I have 8 of the 20 and a lot of the songs from your other choices. I agree with you wholeheartedly regarding "Blood on the Tracks" had that in the car for ages, although I personally would put Revolver top of any list. Another great vid , I've been catching up on a lot of yours this week.

John Heaton My pleasure and thank you for your insightful videos. I have very much enjoyed your reviews and general music chatter. You have earned this sub. All the best!
Classical Music11 cheers
@@johnheaton5667 John why no reviews of Bolan???
Thanks for reviewing some of my favourite albums. Impeccable taste!
Id have ziggy stardust in my top 5. Respect for the Blondie pick though 🤜
Nice list! Abbey Road is at the top of my list and the white album in my top 10.
You've got 2 Beatles albums, 2 Bob Dylan albums and 1 Rolling Stones album on your Top 20. Then I'm suprised not a Kinks album has made you list.
Let's say ´Face To Face´, 'Something Else', 'The Village Green Preservation Society' or 'Arthur'
The album 'The Village Green Preservation Society' was released on the same day as the White album.
John, you have three albums in your top twenty that would also appear on my own list.
Did you ever discover Billy Joel, Jimi Hendrix or Steppenwolf?
Blonde On Blonde/ Bringing It All Back Home/ Highway 61 Revisited/ Blood On the Tracks/ Pat Garrett & Billy The Kid ( still underrated BTW), Sticky Fingers/ The Dark side of the moon, I’ll start with these. Your top albums are great though!

Led Zeppelin - 'IV'
Beatles - 'Sgt. Pepper'
Nirvana - 'Nevermind'
Radiohead - 'Ok Computer'
System Of A Down - 'Toxicity'
Bowie - 'Ziggy Stardust And The Spiders From Mars'
Iron Maiden: 'The Number Of The Beast'
