Did 'nt know but your demonstration was very very helpful. Many thanks.Joan
I read a book by Dan Romm, a former high-stakes rubber bridge player at the Cavendish Club. He laid out his definition of a "good suit:"
A suit where IF your partner is void in the suit AND the suit divides as evenly as possible among your opponents, you will only lose maximum two tricks in the suit.
This heart suit is good: 8 cards to the A-K-10, and with the hearts dividing 3-2 among your opponents, you might only lose the queen and jack, for two. On this layout, of course, you only lose one (assuming you don't try the deep finesse and lose to the singleton jack).
So the robots were right to bid 4H: a shame it doesn't make.
Love the 4H opening! Bajir, you are getting better and better with each video. 😊
The presented hand is clearly a 4H opener, but I like to be aggressive with my 4M openings. A lot can go right when you preempt. Like Curt says, situation matters. It is hard to come up with a clear set of rules. The important thing is to avoid it when the hand has slam potential opposite a limit raise.
In my not so humble opinion one needs at least 17 points to open 4 with an 8 card suit. With 17 or more points and 8 of strong suit in my experience one makes 4 of any suit 90% of the time. The suit here is a little weak at the top and I would open only one heart.. K.J.
@KenJohnson-xr1tk With that approach, you miss a lot of slams and you miss a lot of opportunities to preempt the opponents.
With 7 tricks in your own hand - open 4H.
Would you play this hand please and show us how it should be played?
There's not much to the play. You lose a trick in each suit.
7 in suit mandatory and at least 8 quick tricks?
Could be the right 6-5 or even 6-4 hand.
4h
If I have 8 cards of a suit
Don´t keep the score but very familier.
