I love how the writers used Katara as a safety net for Aang by letting the audience know that this is the final form of Zuko's redemption, that this is him coming full circle as a character, that the audience can rest their shoulders knowing that the once arrogant and hot headed firenation prince can now be trusted to not go back to his evil roots and walk forward as one of the greatest characters in television history. A 10/10 for Avatar The Last Airbender! ♡
It makes sense bc his betrayal was personal to her the most having been there when it happened. Even the reactors knew it the way they were expecting Katara's answer as much as Zuko, going "it's just down to Katara.", "What will Katara say?"
The clear divide of opinion over Zuko is not just Toph being able to tell he's not lying. It's the fact she doesn't know him like the others have, and particularly his contribution to their torment is not something they could just dismiss. Another guess of mine is that she's only heard of him from Iroh, whom she was fond of. Her being open to giving him a chance is sound for us because we're biased towards him but the rest of the characters obviously did not know his journey, what mattered was his part that got them in danger.
Laughing at the fact that both Zuko and the reactors were anxiously were waiting for Katara's answer if he could join the group 😂 My girl had them sweating.
Katara checking Zuko to keep him in line in the end of the ep was a good move to let him know she means business. The Zuko they knew is someone whose loyalty is easily influenced, as Katara have witnessed before. Sometimes, these reactors forget that these fictional characters do not know the characters the way the audience does. The original trio being against Zuko was a correct reaction since the last time they crossed with him, Aang died for a moment and Ba Sing Se fell. Toph being open to him is bc of her fondness of Iroh, and she could just tell whether he lies or not, which is something that's not reliable all the time bc telling the truth now does not solidify future decisions. Zuko had a genuine moment with Katara in the catacombs but he still betrayed her in the end.
Very true about the catacombs thing although I'd say the one difference is that, before he still has lingering feelings of wanting his honor, fathers love and still ingrained brainwashing from the fire nation. Now he realizes he doesn't need it for his father's love, he gives himself honor and learned how the world views the fire nation.
@JayM0603 It was needed. Otherwise, the creators wouldn't have added it in and they obviously knew better than some random watcher. This was all set up to make him work hard to get everyone's trust in the following episodes.
Yea some of these people seem to have forgotten that Zuko siding with Azula in Ba Sing Se lead to Aang literally dying, so yea no fucking shit Katara wouldn't immediately be cool with Zuko joining them when the last time she chose to trust him he betrayed them
@@JayM0603 Of course it was needed, it would look stupid for them to immediately trust him after all the shit he's done, and his betrayal literally lead to Aang's death
Not gonna lie I always feel major secondhand embarassment for Zuko in this, like yeah I wanna cheer for you dude but you did do some pretty effed up shit so its kinda satisfying seeing you getting pummeled by Katara 😂😂 Anyways very much looking forward to the boiling rock special episodes. ❤
@@JayM0603 I meant getting pummeled emotionally, lemme explain, have you ever been in that situation where you're genuinely trying to do good things but the people around you can't see that because of a mistake you've done to them in the past? So they keep making sure you never rise up again? Well for a person such as Zuko, that must've been pretty freaking heavy on the shoulders, Katara just kept pummeling him with words moment after moment, making sure he stays down for good.
Something I realized after rewatching this is the perceived absolutism of Top's ability to tell when people are lying when we know it can be bypassed e.g., brainwashed Jet and Azula in the invasion. The case is that - as we have seen in the Crossroads of Destiny, Zuko was genuinely talking to Katara and we knew he was telling the truth, but then he still betrayed her in the end. He doesn't have a strong mental fortitude to ward off manipulation. Even in the comics, he's like that. I'm afraid he's just really mentally feeble. So, I think it's well done that they added the philosophy of firebending as a way to make Aang realize Zuko is meant to be his teacher, bc that's the one that Aang related to the most, coming from his lived-experience and general view about firebending. Otherwise, it would be questionable if they added him just because "he's telling the truth", which we know could be true for one second and different the next. Because in that essence, we can argue the possibility of Zuko betraying them again in the future is likely way too high if we were in their shoes and not as spectators who's watched him grow as a character. Tbh, it just feels to me they forgave him easily. But him having to go on adventures with each member of the gaang was special to me that I just abandoned the thought.
About the comics, I think it's ridiculous that Zuko still is that weak minded even after becoming Fire Lord. But I love his character so much I just overlook it.
@@fanboykim3018 No it's not I think that's just a flaw of his character, he's shown multiple times that he has that particular weakness so it makes sense he still has it to some capacity even as Fire Lord.
People got to understand Zuko coming back. Is the guy who bully you all through high school wants to be friends now. Or an ex who been toxic for years comes back like "give me another chance". It doesn't matter if it true or not. YOU don't know if it is. As for Katara threatening Zuko at the end. That a woman protecting her man. Katara has deep feelings for Aang. Rather that be best friend or future lover. She saw Aang almost die. He was in her arms. If she didn't have the spirit water that be it and it was all cause by this dude who now claims he change. Katara already lost someone she loves close to her by the fire Nation, her mom. She never wants to see that again. Katara knows like she said that Zuko suggested with the right choice before and choice wrong. She not risking what happened to Aang, happen again a second time. So her theat makes totally sense.
Oh, but you know these so-called fans will just ignore that bc "kAtArA iz AnNoyInG". These people don't like characters being vulnerable and expressing a wide range of emotions. The new wave of fans and casual watchers like characters they can either project their fantasies on or characters who are sinister or tough. They don't like characters being raw bc it reminds them....of them.
