Sammer is the first name that comes to mind when I think of this German team. Also Dieter Eilts was a friggin monster in this tournament. People like Schweinsteiger, Lahm, Müller, Klose and Neuer are legends in their own right but I prefer this gritty, streetwise and unyielding German team over the 2014 team. Also much respect to the iconic Croatian, English and Czech teams. Good times.
I remember this tournament quite well; it was a really good tournament. I agree with you on this German team as well. I prefer the old German teams of the past tbh. Every time I see the old Wembley, it reminds me how much I miss it. Those were the days.......
Guys, I also think same ways. German team of 1980-1990s, especially this one was a very classy team, of German character, style, will not to be broken and save match agianst all ods, like vs England or Czekhia in Final. There will be never again such Germany
This Germany team wasn't the most easy on the eye, however I liked them a lot more than Joachim Low's team. They had genuine qualities of grit and resilience. And they had the guts to play with 2 midfield playmakers, Hassler and Moller.
They could afford to play both players given their formation, which was 3-5-2 plus they unveiled an older surprise packet in Dieter Eilts who was the defensive midfield rock who allowed those two to have free rein. He was even able to cover for Sammer when he went forward. Eilts the defensive cover, Hassler the orchestrator and Moller was the attacking raider (though Scholl took his place during the latter half of the tournament). It was a fine midfield even without Matthaus and Effenberg.
Well, Jogi Löw played with 2 midfield playmakers as well (Kroos and Özil), plus he had a team that had plenty of offensive quality in almost every position. The 2014 team also had "genuine qualities of grit and resilience". They played in tropical humidity, thunderstorm, blistering heat and autumn-like cold. They had to surpass an epidemic of injuries with at least five or six starting players injured or recovering from injury at the start of the tournament. They even had to endure a flu wave before the Algeria match. They held a very strong French team, future World Champions, at arm's length, then squashed Brazil with 200 million people against them and finally beat Argentina when five minutes before the match they lost first Sami Khedira, one of their key players, and later Christoph Kramer. In one sentence: The football gods threw the kitchen sink at them for weeks, but they nevertheless came out victoriously. Out of 35 official games between 2010 and 2014, Germany had won 32, which is probably a world record. Deserving champions if there ever was one. You could make a case that Löw's team needlessly threw away Euro 2012 when they were probably already by far the best team in the world, and of course WC 2018 and Euro 2020 were a disappointment. But the same is true for the 1996 team. They were successful in England, but the other performances between 1992 and 2000 were weak. That's football. You don't always win.
The 2014 team was far superior to this team in every aspect bar maybe penalties, which they didn't have to shoot in 2014. The team in Brazil played in horrible conditions and beat the two big South-African teams Brazil and Argentina. The quality in compared to 1996 was on a totally different level.
One hell of a team! Unbelievable quality squad full of leaders in their prime. And Germany won the EURO although they lost several of their players due to injuries during the tournament (they even had to nominate Jens Todt during the tournament who wasn't in their squad from the beginning)

There's a really good article online called "Redemption Song? Gareth Southgate, semi-finals and football coming home" which explains what happened on the day. "Gareth Southgate should never have had to take England’s fateful sixth penalty at Wembley. Darren Anderton and Steve McManaman settled for places further down the list, the captain Tony Adams provisionally agreed to take that sixth kick but backed out and Paul Ince sat with his back to the action for the whole time. England’s assistant coach Bryan Robson had overseen preparing the players for penalties but had only practiced with the same core of five takers each day. For a campaign planned so meticulously by Terry Venables, it was a shocking oversight given the opposition. Southgate volunteered himself thereafter; we all know the rest."
