    I have used Square and I like it over all. The customer service so far is not so good, though. I sent them 2 separate emails and never got an answer,. It took me a while to even find the chat feature , and I had to go through a number of automated and inadequate responses before chatting with a human. HOWEVER, I hear that they are working on the customer support, and the fact that it is only during business hours is OK. I just want to be able to reach them easily during those hours. I think that Square is a good value. :) thank you for the comparison, very informative.

    Which do you think is the better choice if we currently have a brick and mortar store but want to now offer our items online too? We do prefer something that can track inventory and which vendor it came from. We also need something that preferably generates and prints bar code labels for us to tag things. We frequently do discounts as well so need something than can be adjusted at the register and something that can print receipts. Finally we need to be able to easily do refunds or exchanges. Thank you!

From what you've shared and depending on what other features or software you needed, Square for Retail Plus is likely a better value for you. Hi Dametra! Thanks so much for your question. It's important to note that Square and Shopify are direct competitors, so there really isn't an easy way to get their platforms to shake hands. You do have options though.
      The easier (and our recommended) solution of the two would be to run with Shopify since you've already got the webstore set up. This will make your store POS setup so much easier. The other nice thing is that Square offers a 30-day return on their hardware, so you should be able to recoup your money there if you act quickly.
      The more complicated solution would require finding and paying for a 3rd party integration to get these two platforms to communicate. You may have luck with Zapier, or Shopventory, but we can't vouch for how well this option works. You can check out our review of Shopventory (it doesn't look like we've reviewed Zapier yet) below, and reach out to either or both of them directly to see if they can, in fact, meet your needs. We hope that helps and we certainly wish you all the best in your store launch! So exciting!

    I'm turning a fun hobby into a small online business. I'm looking to make anywhere between $500 to $1000 a month. I'm a stay at home mom looking to make a little extra pocket change. I think Square would be a good fit for me. From what I gather, Square usually freeze and hold funds from businesses making up to $10,000 or more a month. Should I not worry so much since I'll be making much less?

      Hi Bixby! We can't necessarily say that it wouldn't happen, but it's probably unlikely with smaller purchases as long as you are diligently following the terms and conditions of the contract and being a responsible merchant (have a good return policy publicly stated, be careful about handling data, know when a transaction looks suspicious, etc.). Square seems to cost more as your business grows (and you don't want to be penalized for growing your business.) I have a small business with around 6000 inventory sku's both physical items and services. I need something that will actually manage inventory: allow me to enter vendor invoices and have it automatically update the inventory numbers; also that I can set it up to let me know what I need to order and when based on inventory levels. I need it to work seamlessly in my brick and mortar store, but also allow me to expand my website for online sales. My website is woo-commerce friendly but it isn't set up yet. I can't afford to be paying out to multiple apps in order to have this functionality as well as a reliable payment system. Where I live, we have to manage two different taxes (provincial and federal) on sales as well. Will these both integrate with QBO, and do you have to pay for a separate app to do that integration?

    • @MerchantMaverick
      @MerchantMaverick  3 роки тому +2

      Hi Judy! Thanks so much for your question, and wow, that's a tall order -- let's break it down:
      Square and Shopify both have official, direct QBO integrations. And they both offer fairly robust inventory.
      For your situation, you'd likely need Square For Retail with Inventory Plus to really manage the SKUs and vendors and POs. If you went with Shopify you'd need one of the higher-level plans with the POS system to really get everything you're wanting.
      Generally speaking, you'll be in good hands with either option. They're both very good products. They both work with QBO and a variety of small business software. They both create a seamless online/in-person sales experience and they both offer a LOT of value for their price!
      We generally lean toward Square when it comes to delivering value for brick and mortar shops, whereas Shopify is typically a better choice for eCommerce-centric businesses that are simply adding on an in-person shop.
      One final option worth considering is Lightspeed. They definitely have the inventory features and QBO integration, as well as an eCommerce plan for retailers.
      Regardless of which one you choose, you have some great options! Best of luck to you!

I don't really want to spend extra money and I have the square insert for my phone already. • @MerchantMaverick
      @MerchantMaverick  2 роки тому +5

      Hi, Madyson! Thanks so much for your question. We don't recommend using both Square and Shopify together because it can complicate things with tracking inventory, especially if your business were to grow. Also keep in mind that the Shopify reader is $29 and is fully EMV compliant, whereas the free Square magstripe reader is not.
      So either way, we do recommend upgrading to an EMV reader with Square or Shopify because it offers you better security. Of course it is totally up to you, as you can technically use both, they just don't integrate with each other and you'll be dealing with two dashboards, two inventory records, etc. We hope this helps and best of luck!

    What is the conversion rate on Square vs. Shopify? Do the store designs and features of a paid solution equate to better sales, or does the free Square solution provide equal conversion and site design?

    • @MerchantMaverick
      @MerchantMaverick  Рік тому

      Hey there! Thanks for watching! Although we can't directly compare the average conversion rate of a Shopify eCommerce site versus a Square eCommerce site, it's entirely possible to build a successful eCommerce business with either platform. However, depending on your goals, the feature differences (more than the aesthetic differences) do matter.
      For instance, both platforms are capable of powering an eCommerce site, but Shopify is better equipped to facilitate international sales due to its ability to accept far more international currencies than Square. Likewise, the advanced shipping tools and higher number of software integrations available to Shopify users can help your bottom line. There are some definite advantages to Shopify's paid platform vs Square's free platform. You can still work wonders with a free Square Online store but you won't have all the same tools at your disposal! Can any iPad work with these pos systems or does it have to be a specific one and do you have to buy retail software

    • @MerchantMaverick
      @MerchantMaverick  2 роки тому

      Hi Sonya! You should definitely check out our linked article for a breakdown of Shopify & Square's similarities and differences for a more thorough comparison. But, to make the best use of either Shopify POS vs. Square POS, you’ll need an iPad, as many of the best features are only available there.
      Square is pretty friendly about the whole bring-your-own-device thing so long as the device you bring is compatible with its hardware. If you prefer, you can buy iPads and other POS hardware from Square directly, which will ensure compatibility. But you can also use their compatibility checker to see if what you already have on hand will do the trick: squareup.com/us/en/compatibility?platform=iOS&brand=Apple
      As for Shopify, you might find our Shopify Hardware post helpful: www.merchantmaverick.com/shopify-hardware/ Shopify also addresses this question in their FAQ section here: help.shopify.com/en/manual/sell-in-person/shopify-pos/faq#what-devices-does-shopify-pos-work-with
      In terms of retail functionality, Shopify offers a robust shopping cart software, while Square offers a rather limited standalone store, though you can integrate other shopping cart options that support Square Payments. In those cases, you’ll still need to evaluate the eCommerce software you select.
      Hope that helps! And good luck!

      Hi there! We highly discourage mixing Shopify and Square services. You are definitely going to be happy with the Shopify reader if you already utilize the software now. Our recommendation would be to skip that free reader and go for the tap/dip readers. They are basically the exact same thing. We think you'll find that Shopify's centralized inventory management is going to be so worth it. Especially with clothing, if it's already set up in Shopify! Good luck! • @MerchantMaverick
      @MerchantMaverick  3 роки тому +1

      Hi Austin! We are so happy you're here :)
      To answer your question, Square and Shopify's online rates are identical. So it comes down to swipe rates -- if your average transaction size is small (less than $10), Shopify is going to be the better value. But that only applies if in-person transactions make up a substantial portion of sales.
      Square's online offerings are mostly free, so you will get a lot more mileage before you have to start paying -- but you may find it doesn't offer quite as many features as Shopify does.
      Whether the extra features are worth the cost is up to you. If you're looking for an online processor and you have transactions averaging less than $10, you might be better off with a microtransaction plan from Stripe or PayPal.
      We hope this info helps you make the best decision for your business. Best of luck to you!

    What do you recommend for a crafting business that sells stickers and vinyl sheets

    • @MerchantMaverick
      @MerchantMaverick  2 роки тому

      Hi Citlali! Without knowing the details of your crafting business, Shopify might be the better choice owing to its beefier feature set and integration selection. However, if you're just getting started and have a low budget, we'd be inclined to say Square is the better option.

  • @PiggieBonita
    @PiggieBonita 2 роки тому +1

    I’m just starting out with my online business. Which one would you recommend for beginners?

    • @MerchantMaverick
      @MerchantMaverick  2 роки тому +8

      Hi Piggie! The good news is that neither requires a long-term agreement, so they're both "startup-friendly." The best platform for you is going to come down to needs and priorities.
      Both of their processing rates are similar, but Square has a free webstore (powered by Weebly). If you're more focused on cost (and ease of use), Square is the better choice. And if you like Square, you can upgrade to paid plans for more features, so you can definitely build up to a more complex store as you need and budget allows.
      If you're more worried about having a very functional webstore (especially if you have a lot of items), Shopify is probably the better choice. You're looking at $30/month minimum but you're going to get more technical features than you will with Square's free plan right out of the gate.
      Beyond that, a lot is going to come down to whether you want specific features or not. Square has a free egift card program, and I'm not sure that's available in the basic Shopify plan, for example. Do you need vendor management? if so, Shopify is probably a better choice.
      We encourage you to do some research into what is going to make a webstore stand out in your particular niche. Who are you competing against, and what is it going to take to make shoppers want to click that checkout button?
      Also consider whether you're going to ever sell in person (Shopify will work for occasional sales, but Square is much more robust for in-person sales), or work on commissions/custom orders where a good invoice platform will matter (again, Square stands out in this area more than Shopify).
      We realize that's a lot of info to process, but we hope it helps you decide which platform is best for your new business! Good luck to you!

      Hi, Nicole! One thing we have learned in doing our research is that negativity bias is a real thing. Most people don't leave reviews unless they are experiencing a frustration. However, in the vast majority of cases, people are happy with Square. Under the customer review section in our full review of Square, we found that even on the major review sites, Square has impressive ratings: www.merchantmaverick.com/reviews/square-review/#Square_Customer_Reviews_Complaints You can also do a Google search for those major review sites and see what some of the common complaints are, however. how about accurate shipping rates? Which one is best?

    • @MerchantMaverick
      @MerchantMaverick  3 роки тому

      Thanks for your question!
      Both Square and Shopify offer easy-to-use real-time shipping, so this wouldn't necessarily be a deciding factor. However, it looks a little easier to access RTS in Square.
      For Shopify, it's automatically included on Advanced and Plus plans. If you're on the Shopify plan or below, you have to be on yearly billing and also ASK to have 3rd party shipping rates added for free. But anybody shipping from the US, Canada, or Australia can link to Shopify Shipping, which gets you discounted shipping and allows you to show rates to buyers at checkout. And you can do that without signing up for your own accounts with the major shippers.
      So overall if shipping were the deciding factor for you, with everything else being equal, we'd point you toward Shopify. Great question!

    Hey. I’ve been looking everywhere for help. Would be awesome if you could give me some advice. I just opened a new business. We make handcrafted gifts/gift baskets and handmade goods. Kind of like Harry & David gifts. So I need a beautifully designed homepage, page for pre made items, and a custom order page. I’ve been using the square website editor but it hasn’t been that great then paid for the extra features but they’re also not that great. I like that square is all simple to use but it just feels very bland. I don’t own any hardware yet. Eventually we want to get hardware when sales pick up more. Shopify seems to have a lot more customization so I’m almost leaning towards that but I’m really just not sure. I’ve never tried Shopify before but it also seems to integrate with socials apps and everything else better. Figured I would ask someone that knows a bit more. Thank you for your time :)

Although paid subscriptions are required for the specialized industry-specific POS packages and for features like Square's loyalty program, email marketing, and payroll apps. Shopify's POS, on the other hand, does require a paid subscription to use - there is no free subscription tier. Shopify Basic - Shopify's cheapest subscription tier that includes the POS - sells for $29/month, while Shopify's POS equipment is available for a separate flat charge. We hope this helps. Shopify makes it easy to sell in brick-and-mortar and pop-up shops with its in-house POS system. When you sign up for Shopify’s eCommerce store, you’ll also automatically gain access to Shopify POS. Shopify POS lets you easily complete in-person retail transactions and process credit card payments. Your online store and POS system are synced so that every inventory change you make on one platform appears on the other.
