Hello coach!! I want to master my English because... I've being living in the US for almost 8 years, I started learning English at age 16, in high school. However, my professors were not very helpful, they kept me sending me to the next level because I improved my English very fast; but what I learned was not the fundamentals of the language. I need the basics, the different tenses, why do we use them, the proper ways and times to use them. They forgot that I was a beginner students, and that even though I was learning fast, I still needed the basics. So today, was the fist time I found this link to your Podcast, and I am looking forth ward to watch each episode, so I can learn a better, and the more proper way to express my self on English! I also want to get better on it because I need it to treat with business people, so I need the best English that can be expressed. I need to get better on my writing (no run on sentences, etc. Bad grammar! ). Finally, I need to express my thought more fluently! Shane, I have an ESL question. This is my first year teaching ESL students in my general education 5th grade class. I have a couple of beginning Chinese students who can read words, but can't tell me the sound individual letters make. I'm totally thrown by this. How are they able to read the words but can't tell me the phonics? They are still new, so is it sight word reading, am I asking the question incorrectly (what sound does A make?), or is there some pattern is ESL that I'm missing?
To answer your question, I started studying English because I wanted to understand The Beatles lyrics. Yeah, that was the goal. And the reason why I want to master my English is that I am not satisfied with the level of it (It's not up to task :-) ). The goal now is to bring my language knowledge to such a level so that I can fluently speak and freely understand native speakers. It's communication, it's movies, CNN, books... whatever.

Hi I'm from Japan. When I entered the college, I joined the english debating club to study English. I didn't have specific reasons to study English so keeping studying was so hard and I was about to give up. But now I still study English because I found the reasons, yes to be a good debater and to win a debate. The purpose was mastering English and the method was debating, but now the purpose is debating and the method is mastering English. I think finding a bigger goal than just mastering English can help keep study.
