From the Google Cardboard to the Apple Vision Pro & Meta Quest 3, VR displays, optics and headsets in general gone through a crazy evolution in 10 years. With fresnel lenses, pancake lenses, MicroOLED (a.k.a. OLEDoS, or OLED Microdisplays) and more, there is a lot of sci-fi tech to talk about.

Finally, someone who knows what they're talking about when it comes to brightness. All the other dim-witted youtubers told us we were getting 1,000 nits of brightness on the Vision Pro, when the truth is that it's less than 100 nits.

    • @fouzr
      @fouzr 2 місяці тому +3

The main issue is the lenses drop the brightness by 90%

Some additional information on the black frame insertion for those who are interested:
The problem is really that the pixel response time of OLEDs is too good, with LCDs if you do 100fps, the display needs time to adjust, so you have a 'smooth transition' between the two frames, with OLED, that's not the case. The response times are so good that you get a sharp transition.
Think of it this way with frame one being '_' and frame 2 '¯':
    LCD: _/¯
    OLED: _|¯
OLED w/ black frame insertion: _ ¯ with our brain filling in a diagonal line in between.

This was a great breakdown. I'm surprised nobody has taken advantage of necklaces for compute and battery functions. Putting everything on the goggles themselves make them inevitably heavy, and when they do add compute/battery, it tends to be on a belt back or something. I think the ideal formfactor would instead be a small pack that hangs right beneath the back of the neck, and another small pack balanced on the collarbone, and then a flexible rubberized link between them so that the whole set-up fits loosely around any sized head and drapes lightly across the shoulders, not putting pressure on the front or mack, but on each shoulder instead. Then it would only need a short cable to link it to the goggles, while massively boosting the performance of the system.

@Mister0Eel VR gaming is held back because AAA game developers are saying there aren't enough users for them to make VR games. Gamers say there aren't enough VR AAA games. Eventually it will take over as playing Slyrim in VR then going back is like going back to playing pong. But AAA developers are all owned by a giant corporation that wants immediate profits now. Half hearted Sony and Apple VR and even Valve only making one game and Meta stopping PC game production is not helping. But it is inevitable.

The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.
      Hebrews 11:6
6 But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.
      Jesus

to be fair, OLED screens are so dim because of temperature concerns. if you use BFI with a 20% duty cycle you can boost the brightness of that cycle by 5x and still land in the rated temperature range for the display. OLEDs really are the perfect technology for eliminating persistence blur

The Quest 3 is closer to Retina than the AVP since the AVP has a lower effective resolution. Apple intentionally blured the displays so you wont see pixels but that means the resolution is lowered considerably.

For the brightness issue you described, I understand that we should do better from an efficiency standpoint, but I don't think we need brighter VR displays. I always use my Quest 3 at minimum brightness anyways

There are many channel whose Production quality is superb in all video. But this video has genius use of vfx, which makes explaining complex phenomenon simple.
This is what vfx are for.
And the way you explained all functioning of VR is just pure gold.
I learned more in 20 minutes than hours of explanation.
This was what UA-cam supposed to be. Putting my hopes on Nebula.

It's really incredible how perfectly well the Vision Pro is engineered down to its deepest details but we still have a long way to go, especially on the software side of things and creating truly immersive, complex, joyful and meaningful experiences (maybe only being solvable by advanced AGI).

I'm now wondering how a future holographic-lens headset will be able to provide all three colours - seems like it should need very different holographic lenses for each of R, G, B, unless I'm missing something crucial...
(Also that sequence at the start with the exploded headset... amazing 🙂)

Great explanation! It sure makes you excited for the development of this technology. One of the founders of Oculus has said that Apple is doing a "social engineering" tactic while releasing the Vision Pro: they know it looks like bulky ski goggles but the tech is good enough now and it has such a potential that they know that if people want to use this device, eventually even more people will opt in for bulky sunglasses with a cord that runs into a pocket computer that you carry around. The Vision Pro is only the first of its kind.

The optimal VR display will have to be curved because our eyes move in an arc. Being flat vertically is probably easier to get away with, as the eye doesn't have as much range (about 65 deg.) as horizontally, which is 90 to 100 degrees. And we typically don't use the upper and lower extremes of movement as much as side-to-side. Having a lens mimic these curves is possible, but distortion is very hard to get rid of due to the small size and tiny distances involved.

Great video! I'd love to know more about the holographic lenses. I've known for quite some time that lenses can work in holograms, but I've only seen examples where the lens magnifies other elements in the shot. How do they make a holographic lense that magnifies something in the real world?

I do want to add a bit off nuance.
100 nits sounds very dim but its not as dim as you think. Though I do have a Reverb G2 with fresnel lenses.
While using VR, you completely enclose your face, this means it's near-pitch black in there, this makes any light that appears in it much brighter to your eyes.
Our eyes are also amazing at accounting for low light so this also helps a lot.
THen.. I believe Pixar does this but unsure, forces their video mastering for HDR done in a completely blacked out room, using 100 Nits displays only.
