I think he reads the comments and realized we weren't feeling good about his presence. He seemed disgruntled, and we wanted happy flip, so he brought it out.
Because Drake isn’t expanding his fan base. He gained a NEW fan base that appreciates pop music more. His hip hop fans at the beginning dwindled when he went the pop route. So the issue isn’t him trying to appeal to new people, it’s him not caring that he lost his appeal with older hip hop fans.
Excellent episode…conscious level w Mos Def and then ended it with some black joy celebrating 🥳 Ish’s Birthstrong - a dynamic podcast!! Love it from 🇯🇲
The reason people won't come at Kendrick like they do Drake is because Kendrick is a real MC who makes dope albums that real Hip-Hop fans like. Drake will always be an easy target because he doesn't write and makes pop songs.
all that you said is understandable, but y’all took the ghostwriting narrative to far. Drake got a few lines here or there. Which boils down to dude can actually write lyrics himself period. You can't ignore that he can & does write his own but every now & again just gets a little help when he mad busy..
I think what the conversation was missing is the fact that in the beginning you could consider Drake to be a purist or seeking to be accepted as a great emcee just in hip hop period. Along the way due to his versatility he was considered cheesy by the likes of DMX and others because of his ability and Willingness to go outside of hip hops strict definition, which I have to say there is an art form that is hip hop and although it has been redifined by the machine realll hip hop has and always will exist in its essence. In the beginning Drake associated himself with the street elements of hip hop by being on tracks with newcomers and less known artist which made it seem that he was reaching back. But some of his association was questionable due to his perceived intentions on WHY he was reaching back. Some claim he did it to remain hot and also be associated with what’s new as far as the new sounds that were being introduced and to his credit having a keen eye for what’s up and coming is a smart business move as well. What it seems to me that Mos Def aka Yasin Bey was mentioning is that after his acceptance from the hood and American fanfare he became less involved with the struggles of the average black person especially black males could relate to. Black women and fans of course live the brother the male population never fully embraced him because it’s hard to rep or represent a people that you have no true affiliation or history with. His Canadian struggle is not that of a black American male. So the argument is not about his record sales or chart topping sales it’s about who and where is his voice when there are black issues that affect black men. Where does he stand on black lives and police brutality and the effect of drugs in a black neighborhood or black on black violence. These are topics and subjects as a black male that he never addresses in his music or in a post or when the mic is in his hand. Why? He can speak to the female population and make songs of their struggles but the black male he hasn’t to this day addressed at all. I honestly don’t even know if he can or cares too especially at this point because he has the ears of our women, he does make great music for socializing and partying but when it all boils down to it his catalogue has no depth when it comes to black American life or community. I also wanna let it be known that even tho Hip Hop has grown to a worldwide audience it still began as the voice and expression of the experiences of black American male and female youth. That’s why it’s so important to understand the cultural impact and the importance of respecting the origins of Hip Hop and when you go too far from its center you are outside of what it truly Represents therefore you CAN not be considered REAL HOP HOP

I don’t think that’s fair well written for sure but I think he himself said it that he respects artists who can speak outside of themselves but he said he can’t his music relates to him his experiences and struggles I think his had a huge difficulty speaking outside of himself and that’s okay it was never his type of music to make . But expecting him to talk on such subjects even in posts isn’t a fair assessment his shared his piece before , he has supported it’s just more so behind closed doors , there’s variable charitable organisations he supports but aside from that wanting someone who grew up from all walks of life to specifically just focus on black struggle is an impossibilty this is a diverse human who grew up both whites and blacks and more actually and yes he identifies as black but ultimately wanted to show love and support to everyone isn’t a crime. I don't think they really cheating tho...yet but mel did think she could take him and probably still do cause she don't know any better
What brother Yasiin Bey is speaking on, in totality, was about what will these pop artists will talk about and who will listen to them when the capitalist society crumbles. People like Drake can't speak to the people or on behalf of the people when the stuff hits the fan. Hip-hop comes from the ground swell, and Mos knows he don't represent the ground, the streets. Great point Joe with using Kendrick and Cole and how they're still revered amongst the OG's and MC's and the people!
30:04 To argue Ice's point here; If that is the case then it should not be called hip-hop anymore. They should find a new name to what is being done today if it's so far removed from it's origin that the people from it's Genesis don't recognize it. That's what's happened to every form of music to bring the next evolution to this point Jazz, blues, R&B , Rock and all it's different forms. Why do we keep calling something that does not reflect the essence of it's name as Hip-Hop?
Because this is all being done to kill hip hop. It's not being done to create an evolution like they claim. If it was about evolution like they claim they wouldn't mind it being called something else. What they want and "They" being suburban corny dudes that could never relate to hip hop from its inception want is to kill hip hop because they don't fit in. These people that want Drake to be seen as hip hop really just want hip hop to die because they can't find a place in it in its original form.
Absolutely. I was sitting here thinking, but Ice if it evolved beyond its origin in almost every way. Its no longer HIP-HOP. It is Pop. It is KPOP. It is whatever name you tag on it but it is not Hip-Hop. Hip-Hop is a cultured based genre of music that falls under a much larger umbrella of culture. Madonna could never claim country music. Adele will never be R&B. Lizzo won't be Opera. If any of that did miraculously happen the genre won't change just the artist. Drake left hip-hop musically and culturally. Ice's take is off...
Mos was saying that hip-hop is starting away from its foundation, and that, without that foundation the empire (hip-hop) will begin to crumble. And we are seeing that reality NOW

Too bad Mel willing to be a side, she think she can take him from ole girl cause she white but men of any race with any race usually ain't leaving especially if kids involved! Don't matter how much prettier, smarter or successful you are unless you all 3 and got a better attitude, funner, more respectful and supportive! Idk tho.

Ish thinking Kanye only been political in the past 5 years is hilarious when "all falls down" came out in 03-04
Ish tends to have a low opinion of Kanye. Comes off as hate.
