- I review the John Byrne's Fantastic Four Artist's Edition published by IDW. The artists editions publish high quality scans of original comic art, focusing on a particular artist and series.
Beautiful! Byrne is one of the very, very best.
John Byrne, the greatest.
Those were the days! Byrne on FF, Simonson on Thor, Miller on Daredevil... All about the same time. Iconic, classic runs.

This book is incredible, as are all the Artist Editions. Byrne has always been my favorite as well (going back to 1980). This period especially. Incredible detail and master storytelling. Thanks for sharing.
FYI the cut corners are from the originals. Pencillers generally taped the pages down at the corners while drawing to keep the page from moving. Once finished they would slice off at the corners and send off the finished piece to the publisher.

One of the legends of comics. Agree, that X-Men was his peak with Terry Austin. With Fantastic Four and his DC work and his Next Men, he was writing and drawing and even inking his own work. He had the speed, but the lines were bigger and more rushed. But these are still beautiful.

JB really did a great job when he took over. The comic got so much better. My favorite era, right next to the pre #100 Issues...The Classics. Great stories...would have liked to hear more about the stories. Thanks for the posts. The art was great, but the stories very much distracted from them. LOVED the 'Leathery' Thing. They should do that in the movies!

This video was the beginning of my addiction. I bought this book after watching your video. I was so jazzed on it when I got it, I immediately grabbed up one of the last copies of the X-men book that IDW had left. Cut to: Just under 2 years later, I now own SEVEN of these editions. This is almost as expensive as a drug habit...

I’ve got the 3 Byrne, a Steranko Nick Fury and the Ninja Turtles. The TMNT is small (they drew the art smaller) and the Steranko is HUGE for the same reason.
@@ScottDSackett -- I hear the Kirby Thor editions are monstrous as well. I wish they'd do more of the smaller 'artisan' editions of these books that are sold out. Not as nice as looking at the art full size, but MUCH easier to just pull off the shelf to flip through. I find I don't look at the large books as much as I'd like just because they're more of a pain to move around. Literally. My back isn't what it was.
chuck gibson my big problem is storage. These things are hard to store.
@@ScottDSackett -- I totally agree with you. The dimensions of the books are incompatible with boxes, bags, boards and any other supplies a collector might already have to store and maintain these the way you'd like to. I was uncertain about the Artisan editions and found a bargain on the Simonson Thor book and grabbed it up--- yeah, it's smaller, but much the same experience at a much more manageable size. I ordered the Wally Wood one from IDW right after seeing the Thor.

John Byrne was my favorite artist back in the day. I collected all his stuff. I love to draw, and even to this day, I still see influences of Byrne's work on my own art. Love his work on The X-Men. Byrne's FF stuff was more personal to him and it showed in his work. His inks gave his art a more organic feel versus Austin's. I think I read somewhere that Byrne worked twice up so the originals would have to be shrunk down to fit the 11"x17" pages of this book. This book brings back a lot of memories. One year, around my birthday, I remember hinting to my family that I would love to get this book...no one got the hint...blah. Thanks for posting.
Rometiklan I have the X-Men book also and I have to agree I like Byrne’s inks a little better. Austin’s are just a little too perfect. I think Byrne was influenced by what Austin did so Byrne’s inks post X-Men have some of the cleanest I liked in Austin’s inks but with an organic feel.
When I’m inking my comic, this is the book that influences me.
I know byrne experimented a lot during his FF run, but I’ve never heard him drawing at a different size. But it’s possible, however I think they would have noted it since the concept behind this book is 100% accurate reproduction of the original art.
I wish they would have had Byrne make notes in any inking technique he used. I guess I could ask on his website, but he’s reluctant to make specific comments because critics tend to use that against him.
@@ScottDSackett Hey thanks for the reply. I'm not sure if Byrne started drawing twice-up during his run on FF, but I read somewhere that he did eventually go that route.
Yes, Byrne did do a bit of experimentation during his FF run. He was trying to be innovative...comic drawn in landscape mode, changing his art style, inking with new Japanese pens...his art saw some evolution. I recall his letter to fans to give them a heads up about changes forthcoming to his art style both big and small. As a huge fan of his, I was really apprehensive about any changes. I would love to ask Byrne why he wanted to change his style, what prompted it, and what were the changes. Anyways, I hope you post a vid about the X-Men edition too.

Magnifique artist
Loved his FF run. But I'll be honest, I preferred it when he inked his own pencils. He had a bunch of inkers take over near the end of his run and I never quite liked the look of the books during that time.
I agree, towards the end he had some inkers who didn't suit his work. This book (I think) is all his inks.

The detail is astounding when it's not colored. I'm always torn because good coloring can really add to a book but 9/10 it seems to detract from the pencil work. Thanks for the video.
As an artist, I always like looking at the original linework, but some art definitely improves with color. This is a great book to get to study John Byrnes work up close.

@@ScottDSackett -- My copy arrived yesterday. After seeing it, I was heartbroken I'd missed the Byrne X-men volume and looked online in desperation.... only to find that the publisher had them back in stock and were no longer sold out. I jumped on it immediately. Now, you've not only helped IDW sell one book, but TWO! I LOVE this FF volume. I remember buying that first Byrne written issue as a kid and got that same excitement in my chest as I looked through the pages. These volumes may seem pricey, but if you do the math, it's less than a buck per page--and nicely bound as well. Worth every penny IMO. Waited 35 years to see the art this way!

T a Yes and I recently picked up the ‘Byrne Marvel Classics. I love the Byrne/Austin art from X-men, but Austin’s inking is so clean there’s little to see, it looks like the comics blown up.
My favorite is the FF book. Byrne’s inking had an organic feel that Austin’s was missing.
However all three books are great.
@@ScottDSackett Nice. I haven't ready any Fantastic Four, but your vid makes me think the FF book has better art than his X-men book. It looks great! I may consider getting it just to look at.
