  • Tonga Tau’olunga
The Tongan Tau’olunga is said to have been adopted into Tongan culture from the Samoan taualuga though many of the movements or motifs used in the tau’olunga come from the more ancient ‘ula’ dance. The ula, also known as fa’ahi-ula or faha’iula was a group dance for young chiefly daughters. With the introduction of the Samoan taualuga in the 19th Century, it became institutionalised amongst Tonga’s aristocracy (associated to the Tu’i Kanokupolu lineages) and soon became one of the most popular dances to end an occasion.
In the 1950’s Queen Salote personally made the tau’olunga distinctly more Tongan by adding wrist flourishes and lakalaka leg transitions into her song ‘Manu ‘o Palataisi’ (Bird of Paradise). This led to what we see in composition and format of the modern tau’olunga today.
Sisi’uno Helu shows us how to do some basic movements of the tau’olunga ranging from the ‘taulalo’, the ‘ha’o ta’, the ‘vete’, the 'kako', the ‘fu’, the ‘tongi’one’ and the ‘fakataupasi’.
    Check out how to tau’olunga.

There is so much grace and elegance to the Tongan tau'olunga - from a Samoan, our histories will forever be intertwined and I think it's a beautiful thing. Thank you for sharing this!

I'm Samoan, and I danced the Tongan section at PCC (Polynesian Culture Center) in Laie, Hawaii when I was attending BYU-Hawaii in the early 80s. The Tongan section was my favorite to dance, and I've always wanted to dance the Tongan tau'olunga because of how graceful it is. Now I'm much older but I still want to learn it. (:D

That’s awesome! I’m Tongan and love the Siva Samoa haha! I find it much more free flowing and less restricted in my opinion. I guess my great great great grandmother from Samoa was channeling through me the entire time. No wonder I loved the Nifo Oti as well 💕🙏🏾

I'm quater Tongan, my great great grandfather is from the Havea Family in Vavau who was a Methodist missionary to Samoa in the early 1900s. It's great to see both cultures come together. Tongans and Samoan have rich history which brings both cultures together.

It was thanks to the mother of Tonga we kept the tauolunga alive because it was banned back in the late 1800 for being too provocative but queen salote added movements to make it christian friendly so we can keep the dance alive, beautiful beautiful tauolunga.

Thank you for sharing 🙏🏽💛 brought tears to my eyes, I have been trying to learn more about Tongan culture. I am half Tongan, but, was born in Western Australia & adopted by Europeans. Have always felt like part of me is missing, so I am saving for a trip to Tonga with my family to immerse ourselves in Tongan culture. Now I can practice Tau’olunga 🥰 thank you so much

Most of the Tongan dances are from Samoa and other islands like Fiji also. That is why most of our histories intertwine. So, please this is a movement...Its a positive movement, lets keep it up. I can trace my line way back and found out that one of my great grandmother is of Samoan Origin (a chief's daughter) married to a Tongan of Royal and Noble lineage Ngata who is also of Fijian blood. So, lets keep the peace before you find out your are of that origin and make yourself look stupid. Malo :)

pu be sorry but the truth, Samoa is consisted of three royal lines Tui Manu'a Tui Atua and Tui A'ana Tongans and Samoans royal families are really close because most of Tonga history especially the royal family history of Tonga will always lead back to Samoa in the islands of Manu'a and Upolu and this is why most of our Samoan culture was adopted by the Tui kanokupolu royal family meaning hearts and flesh of Upolu, both Tui Tonga and Tui Ha'atakalaua are descended from Samoa, think about the name Tonga means south, that's the relationship between Tonga and Samoa.
