Up until a few years ago…I always grew onions in raised bed, extremely fertile soil, thick mulch and almost daily watering.
I have switched to ground planting onions on black plastic…decent compost/soil but only watering them 2-3 times total. No fertilizer. Consistent 3-4 inch onions…once you go black plastic, you will never go back. Takes a little work to prepare the site, I run double rows 12” apart, onions 6” on center with drip between each row. No weeding is the best part. Make yourself a tool to punch holes and set your depth. Easiest thing you will grow in the garden. Dixondale is awesome, starting your own seeds is an interesting challenge.

I'm coming back and watching your onion videos. I have just built a 4'x16'x2' raised bed and filled it with garden soil, compost and peat moss. Should receive my Dixondale onions this week. I wanted to revisit your examples since I'm here in the DFW area. I'm excited to get the onions started for my winter garden. The Dixondale connection was a great help and very interesting to see how they started a grew over the last 100 years. Thanks for the videos.

This is awesome. I know so little about onions and have never tried them because I’ve been scared off by our short growing season. May give them a go this year.

I bought the sample onions and mine aren't as big as yours they are the size of a dime and smaller.. is this normal.

In any given bundle of onions there are a few big ones and most are just as you're describing. I was buying 100 bundles and planting them from biggest to smallest. So what you see in my video is me planting the 60 or so big ones and not the 400 smaller ones. Good news...take care of them and they all grow well. The tiny ones even turn into really good spring onions.
