Listening to the mono now here in Dublin Michael and yes, this is fantastic. It came out of the sleeve dirty and with a lot of static. But I gave it a spin on my record cleaner and a zap with the ZeroStat. Wow. This is a quiet, flat and beautiful pressing!! The soundstage is amazing! I might try the stereo tomorrow but I got this for the Mono. I would have missed this except for your channel. If I could subscribe twice, I would! Have a good evening!
I got it in the mail last weekend. I didn’t know they were going to have those authentic labels, just fantastic! Like you said it has a great vinyl quality to it. I’ve had it on cd since the early 90’s. It was a totally different experience listening to it on vinyl. I really have been missing out for all these years.

What a great release. I have an old beat up, noisy copy that I got from my uncle and I just love the music. It's great that Rhino put some care into the whole package even if it's not a gate fold, which I actually don't mind.
Funnily enough I put the album in the shopping cart on Amazon, and it was the full price $35, only to drop to $22 over the course of about 30 min. while I was shopping. Keep an eye on it friends, it fluctuates a lot.
I asked Kevin Gray, "Did you master the recent 60th Anniversary 'My Favorite Things' record for Rhino from tape?"

My Favorite Things has been one of my most beloved songs since Julie Andrew’s sang it in the movie The Sound of Music. Coltrane’s version is to die for. I picked up the Anniversary Edition for the mono mix. I am waiting for mine to come some time this week. Thanks for such a great review.
Same here! Bought my copy of “MFT” in the 90’s and have been enjoying it for 25 years. I’ve been jonesing for a vinyl version and I already ordered the Rhino Stereo / Mono version. Can’t wait to spin this classic.

Just got mine today from Amazon. $22.53 US, and it’s just beautiful. So good and so quiet. I read a review from a guy who was sending it back because he didn’t like the quality of the cover. Some people I just don’t understand!

This album was the first jazz record on vinyl i bought myself. I have the ORG 45rpm and the 2010 Rhino single disc and both are great imo. Listening to the needle drop sample of this new double edition on Juno records it sounds like it could well be the best and to hear KPG is involved explains why. Alot of remastering is a 5min digital pro tools job. Cohearent is not that lol. Cant wait to grab one 😁

Got mine yesterday. The mono is much better than the stereo. I have known this music for a long time and I 'hear' it in mono. The stereo version suffers from some of the separation issues found in early stereo and the instrumental sound in the channels is somewhat pinched and not as natural as on the mono version, which allows the music to breathe. My copy of the Blakey/Monk album also arrived yesterday and it is also excellent. I cannot criticise the production at all. There are probably better albums, musically speaking, from both of these men, but this one is well worth having. Trumpet player Bill Hardman comes over particularly well on this pressing.
Where did you get yours from? Amazon selling a separate mono version?
The stereo version of my favorite things does sound pinched I notice this the most during symbol crashes and during the first half of the piano solo.

I received this LP and the Art Blakey the day before. I must admit, I purchased both without looking into the details, I just knew I wanted them. I didn't realize until seeing your review this was a Rhino release and I didn't know it was a Kevin Gray remaster. After watching your enthusiastic review I immediately had to play this LP. The stereo version first, followed immediately by the mono. To me Rhino is a second tier remastering label and I think of them more for their rock rereleases. In general their sound quality is a B to A- and their pressing quality a C to B.
I must admit after watching your review I was expecting a sound quality like a Tone Poet or the Verve Acoustic Sounds Series. I must say I am not familiar with this particular LP and I don't have other pressings to compare it to. On my system, the stereo pressing it fell a bit short of a typical Tone Poet. I'd give it a B on my sound system and I really didn't care at all for the stereo mix. I am having trouble describing what I didn't like about it. Allowing for the typical hard panned stereo mix of that time, It still sounded a bit "unnatural" to me and I really didn't care for it. The mono mix was another story. I thought is was an A- to an A in sound quality and it did compare favorably to a typical Tone Poet LP. I liked the mono mix very much .It was powerful and natural sounding. In a way the biggest surprise for me was the pressing quality. My 2 discs were dead flat, dead centered and dead quiet. In my experience, Rhino discs are not usually this good and I often hear some background noise.
I share some of your excitement about these two new titles on Rhino. If this is to be an ongoing series and their new quality level for jazz releases, it is a sign of good things to come. Two discs at that price point is simply amazing. I do like having the stereo and mono mixes to compare. Having said that though, I don't see me ever listening to the stereo mix again, but again at that low price I don't mind.
P.S. I just finished listening to the 6 disk Oscar Peterson "Exclusively for My Friends" box set on MPC. This is a label I am sure you know well from living in Germany. You should definitely give this box set a listen. This "Previously unreleased on LP" performances are some of the best performances I have heard from Oscar Peterson. He and the trios are in synch and on fire. These tracks have some of the best sound I have heard from OP too. This is now a desert island disc(s) for me

Hi Michael, great review work as always. I like these comparisons. I wonder to what extent comparisons are system dependent. I also have the ORG 2X45 stereo version. On my system the new 60th stereo mastering is brighter ( has more treble). Don't get me wrong, it is great for the money and, on first listening, surprisingly close to the ORG. But on closer listening the ORG is clearly better - in my system at least. It has a wider dynamic range and is more detailed. This is particularly noticeable on the drums, for example. Also the 60th has a slight graininess in the treble, noticeable in the piano. There is no graininess in the ORG mastering.
Perhaps the best thing is opportunity to get a good sounding and clean mono pressing in the 60th. Who can afford those ridiculously priced ERC monos on Discogs?
So winners all round with this new edition. For those owning the ORG stereo, no worries. You have still have the better stereo version. For those purchasing the 60th, you get a great sounding, clean mono and stereo version for just £40. Bargain!
Joe Harley (Blue Note Tone Poet) confirmed this was all analog. His was at mastering seasons for Blue Note at Kevin Gray’s studio and stated the original Coltrane master tapes were there.

We’re the ORG releases ever confirmed AAA? I always assumed so but wonder if hype just says “Mastered from OMT”. These ORG versions just tend to get lesser reviews, doesn’t make sense with Bernie, AAA?, 45 and RTI/Pallas press.
The ORG does have a sticker stating 'from original analog tapes'. I have always been very happy with the sound of that pressing
Amazon just reduced the price on this to $22 for some reason - even more of a reason!
Personally, I hate the idea of putting mono and stereo discs in a 2LP package. I understand some of you enjoy comparing different versions (and I’m glad you do, since this provides a lot of good information to the community). But for me (and I suspect the vast majority of consumers) it’s pointless - I will only listen to one of these discs. I would have much preferred a mono-only disc and better packaging. Nonetheless, I bought anyway when Amazon US dropped the price to $22.53.

I have all of the ORG Coltrane 45 releases. I think they sound just OK. Very little dynamics, depth, or tone. I will be picking up the 60th at my local record store.
Wish I read this a few days ago. Just picked up the ORG Coltrane plays the blues and it sounds awful. Poor sound quality, hiss that is as loud as the music, just a turd of a release and at $59 I’m very displeased. I’ll live but I won’t by ORG again.

Rhino has really raised their game in the last few years.
It took me greatly by surprise, I didn't know at the time, last week, that it was KG even. It's an absolute steal. The timings on the inner sleeve are incorrect - just reproduced from the original artwork I think!
I held off buying this simply because Rhino didnt say anywhere on their site or their PR to stores who had mastered it. I just dont think of them as an audophile label so wasn't sure it would be worthy enough to replace my ORG version. I'm glad Michael let us know

I have an original, the Heavyweight Champions Atlantic Stereo box and the more recent Atlantic Mono box
THe Mono only has a 45 rpm of MFT - stating not able to reproduce the the lp due to tape damage
So we have a new tape after the ERC production

hi this should be a Standard. both versions on the same product. we will have a few € left for other reissues.
Coltrane and Miles had the same concept of taking Popluar tunes and composing them in the Be Bop mode. And of course to change your voice.. Coltrane going to Soprano, Miles using a harmon mute... The music appealed to such a wide audience , and it made Jazz ..Cool..
Elvin , in Drummer opinion, plays much better when he's not the head of the band. No wonder these chose these songs.. The perennial standard " Summetime " is one we covered in many styles... in my Jazz Band and in my Steeldrum Band. I took a quick listen to the mono and stereo version.. Im partial to the mix whereby the rhythm section doesnt get stuck in the back...

Thank you for informing us about this Rhino release. I bought the CD back in the '90s and always liked the music but the stereo mix is so UNNATURAL sounding that I don't listen to it often. Because of your review I picked up a copy at my local record store in Fort Worth, Texas. It does sound great - so much so that it's one of those records that will cause cravings. The mono is so much more enjoyable to listen to - I'll probably rarely put on the stereo disc. I am loving these type of videos where you compare different releases of the same record!

But then again as your countryman Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel says "The true is the whole." If you can dig that my fine German friend!
Sounds great but 35 dollars vs 50 euro's in Germany... It's never the other way around. Even for lp's pressed in Europe...

@@Elvis-wu6et Yes, the Americans don't know how lucky they are! They have all the great audiophile labels and as a result they pay a lot less for their records. But maybe it's a good thing. Now I'm being really selective with what I'm buying. Living in the US would cost me a lot more money on records!
