    I had my cat for 6 years. He's very calm, loves people. Since we basically raised him from birth, he's had little to no experience with other cats. However, we decided to get a new cat anyway, thinking our old cat was a little lonely. We brought home a rambunctious kitten who settled in very quickly. He was in love with the old cat but my old cat hated him from the start. But you just have to be patient. After months of avoiding each other and fighting, they became great friends.

    We completely understand! There can be a 4-6 week adjustment period when introducing a new animal to the home. So REALLY keep an eye on both of them for a while since she has been away from you for a while and you were not responsible for her training.

    You are going to need to remember that there is about a 6 weeks adjustment period. In the beginning, keep them separated when you are not able to supervise them. Only allow interaction when you can watch them.

    Same general rule will apply. Usually 2-6 weeks to adjust to each other. Do not leave them together unsupervised until you feel they can be trusted. Keep them in separate room or kennel the new Tom (only b/c he us new not b/c he is bigger) when you can not supervise them. Be patient and realize that it will take a while for them to adjust to each other. HTH.

    We can understand your apprehension...Good for you in doing your research...Most animals will acclimate to each other within 2 weeks time. However if you are worried about your aggressive cat...Don't leave then alone together unsupervised until then. Either keep them in separate room or keep one kenneled (when not supervised.) Also, ask your vet for other suggestion they might offer you since they already "know" your cat. Hope that helps. Thanks for watching. :)

    One of my cats passed away last June due to FIV. Since her death, her brother has been going to the bathroom outside the litter box. We brought him to the vet and found that he did not have FIV like his sister, so this wasn't a health related problem. We've tried everything from cleaning the box thoroughly. Our best guess is that he is very lonely considering no one is home for a majority of the time on the weekdays. We're thinking of buying a kitten to prevent his loneliness. Will this better the situation?

  • @howdini
    @howdini  12 років тому +3

    Ok, make sure you introduce them slowly. Only have them together in the same room while supervised. Usually it is the kittens that are the standoff-ish but if your dog was once attacked she might be in "defense" mode. So, again, introduce them slowly and supervised. Allow at least two weeks before starting to worry. Good luck!

  • @howdini
    @howdini  12 років тому +2

    It will take some time. Right now since your kitty seem aggressive...Make sure they are only together while supervised. It will take some time but they will eventually get along (at least tolerate each other.) Hope that helps. :)

    You are going to have really keep an eye on them. Keep them separated as much as you can. You don't want them to attack/hurt each other.

  • @howdini
    @howdini  12 років тому +2

    Hang in there! Kittens are instinctively fearful of dogs. They will eventually adjust but it will take time. Several weeks. Just be patient and give your new kitten time and space to adjust and don't leave them alone w/o supervision.

  • @howdini
    @howdini  12 років тому

    Your parents are right about waiting until your are finished w/ the move. They will eventually get along (or at least tolerate each other) You will have to keep in mind that it will take 2-8 weeks for the transition. So be patient and don't leave then alone unsupervised together until then.

  • @howdini
    @howdini  12 років тому

    Awww...she sound super sweet! She will be fine. At 7 years old, her temperament is established and there should not be too many surprises.

  • @howdini
    @howdini  12 років тому

    Congrats on your new addition. Many people welcome a kitten into their homes where other animals are present. Just remember that there is about a 6 weeks adjustment period. In the beginning, keep them separated when you are not able to supervise them. Only allow interaction when you can watch them. Keep in mind that your kitten will probably be very upset and hissing at first and your dog will be VERY excited and want to play. So it will be like oil and water at first.

  • @howdini
    @howdini  12 років тому

    Lucy has been through a lot and she is still trying to adjust to her new home/family. It will take some time. Having an excited dog coming up in her face put her on the defense. Just be patient w/ her and she will eventually adjust AND your dog will adjust to her...and respect her and the space she needs. Just hang in there. Until the acclimate to each other please don't leave them alone together. Keep them in separate room (or kennels) until you can trust them.

  • @howdini
    @howdini  11 років тому

    Sorry for the dealy. YT has had issues with getting the comments delivered. How has the adjustment coming? It has been over a month so hopefully thing are going pretty well. Usually the process takes 6-8 wks so even if it was rocky in the beginning it should be smoothing out by now.

  • @howdini
    @howdini  11 років тому

    keeping them separate is good esp. if you can not supervise them. You can change up the areas and that should be fine.

  • @howdini
    @howdini  11 років тому

    It is good that have seen each other for quite some time. It will take some time for the adjustment. Cats are instinctively "on gard" and cautious and dogs have higher energy levels. Do not leave them alone toghether unsupervised. They will eventually learn to at least "tolerate" each other. This process can take at least 6-8 weeks. Be patient understand that there will be a lot of hissing and barking.

  • @howdini
    @howdini  11 років тому

    It will be a struggle to introduce a kitten/cat to a hyper breed. What kind do you have? You will have to take serious precautions to have them separated when you are not able to keep a close eye on your kitten (for the kittens sake) Your whole family will have to be on board with this. It can take up to 6 weeks and sometimes longer for the adjustment to happen so be patient.

  • @howdini
    @howdini  11 років тому

    It may take a while. Usually 6-8 weeks is the average for the adjustment.

  • @howdini
    @howdini  12 років тому

    It does take some time. Give at least a 2 week time frame. Cats that have never been around dogs before can take a bit longer. They will "eventually" get along. Just be patient and don't leave them alone together for a while though. Also, call you vet and see if they have some other suggestions. Good luck! :)

  • @howdini
    @howdini  12 років тому

    They will eventually get along (or at least tolerate each other.) Keep in mind that you can not expect to have the same "relationship" as she did w/ her boy friend...it is different so be understanding of that.

  • @howdini
    @howdini  11 років тому

    It has been a few weeks! (darn YT delay) Hopefully things are better. Cats are very sensitive and hopefully with the fact that the puppy is SO YOUNG your cat will have an easier time adjusting. It can take up to 6 weeks. Be patient with your cat. How is the puppy? Hopefully she is ok being w/o her mother so young. Let us know.

  • @howdini
    @howdini  12 років тому

    When you introduce them make sure it is only supervised. Don't leave them together in the same room when you are not there. Lock up/out one to keep them save. Obviously the baby is not going to harm your older one. Your older one may adjust a bit easier since this is a baby and much smaller and less intimidating. The transition may take a few weeks but it will happen. Just do it in small short supervised sessions. Good luck! :)

  • @howdini
    @howdini  12 років тому

    So glad that you are not giving up! How long has the daughter been in the picture? Have you tried talking to your vet? Your vet know your cat and may have some useful ideal or techniques that may work specifically for your cat. Hang in there!

  • @howdini
    @howdini  12 років тому

    Contact you vet since they already know Sultan. However, introductions should be done slowly (all for at least 2 weeks) don't leave them unsupervised. When you are not home keep them separated. Only introduce them when you are able to intervene if needed. HTH

  • @howdini
    @howdini  12 років тому

    How long have you had the two of them? It can take up to 3 months for the adjustment to happen. Until then, please do not leave then alone unsupervised. Keep them separated to keep them safe.

  • @iTruth1
    @iTruth1 11 років тому

    sure do. First i have a question or two if you dont mind. How old are your cats? what type of dog? how old is the dog? One big tip is to make sure you drain your dogs energy way way down before introducing them. Take the dog for a long walk or run Before the introduction. Remeber, this will take a bit of time most likely so just allow them to smell eachother and keep the dog on the leash at first. Use your instincts, most likely everything will be just fine.

  • @howdini
    @howdini  11 років тому

    If you have a friendly dog then you will have an easy transition when you introduce a cat. You may have an issue with the cat adjusting so just be patient and don't leave them alone until you can trust them.

  • @howdini
    @howdini  11 років тому

    This is a normal reaction when they meet. They will eventually get along. It will take about 6-8 weeks for the adjustment to happen so just be patient.

  • @howdini
    @howdini  12 років тому

    Ok, hang in there! It can take 6-8 weeks for them to adjust. It will happen though, just be patient and keep your eye on them and don't leave alone. Your kitten will soon realize that he is not being threatened and that your home is a safe environment.

  • @howdini
    @howdini  11 років тому

    They will eventually learn to get along. They may not be all lovey-dovey but they will eventually get to know their boundaries with each other.

  • @howdini

    There is a period of time, usually 2-6 weeks, where cats need to adjust to new members of the family. Just keep being patient and don't leave them together alone unsupervised. HTH. ;)

    @LunaCandles sounds like you have a very happy cat. That means you're a very kind owner to it since a pet often reflects their owner!

  • @howdini
    @howdini  11 років тому +1

    Your dog will be all excited until the kitty hisses and slaps her. She will be cautious but the kitty will EVENTUALLY get used to your dog. There is usually a 6-8 week transition and do NOT leave them along together during that time. But once they are adjusted to each other don't be surprised if you come home one day and you see the two of them snuggled together on the sofa! :)

  • @howdini
    @howdini  12 років тому

    Oh yes! That is so adorable that your puppy is very maternal and so loving to the baby kittens! ;)

  • @howdini
    @howdini  11 років тому

    Cats are instinctually fearful of dogs. It can take up to 6-8 weeks to adjust to the new member. You are doing the right thing by holding your kitty and making sure they are both safe.

    So, at 2:22 they are introducing two cats through a glass pane with holes in it. Is the black and white cat acting aggressively, or is it excited to see another cat and wanting to play with it? At times it looked aggressive, but at other times it looked like it just wanted to play or cuddle with the cat that was being held. I'm trying to research this issue as we are wanting to adopt a second cat. (Spayed female). Any answers and advice are greatly appreciated!!!

  • @howdini
    @howdini  12 років тому

    It will take time for the adjustment to happen but it will happen. Sounds like your dog will be fine but understand that most kittens are fearful of dogs and will need time and space to adjust.

  • @howdini
    @howdini  12 років тому

    They will get used to each other eventually, it will just take some time. Do not leave them alone unsupervised until them. Many home have both cats and dogs. So, if you decide to get a kitten, just hang in there and be patient.

    My cat was about 6 weeks old (stray) when we brought him home. Our Rat-cha (Terrier) was around 2 years old at the time. The wrestle and chase each other. Our dog was terrified of our previous cat.

  • @howdini
    @howdini  12 років тому

    They will eventually go-exist. For now, though, do not leave them alone unsupervised. If you need to. Put the kitty in a kennel (w/ food, water, and litter) when you are not able to watch them. How long have you had your kitty?

  • @howdini
    @howdini  11 років тому

    Not necessarily. It just take a bit of time. It does not happen right away. You can not expect them to be best buds from the first meeting. Most dogs want too, but cats want to be enemies for quite a while. It is a defense mechanism.

  • @howdini

    They will eventually get used to each other. The older is establishing his dominance. This can last for quite a while. At lease 6-8 wks. So hang in there and don't leave then alone w/o supervision. Hopefully thing are quieting down by now for you.

  • @howdini
    @howdini  12 років тому

    Wow. That is tough. I think kittens would be better to "train" to adjust to rats however your desire to adopt an already grown cat is great!. May I suggest you contact your Vet for some suggestions. Not sure if "rat" breeders are available to ask as well. Also, try internet searches as well. Kuddos to you for doing your research before hand. Good Luck!

  • @howdini

    Poms can be a bit rambunctious. If he is always like that with your existing cats then chances are he will continue to act the same way. You will need to make sure that you new kitty is kept safe and away from the kitty when you are not able to supervise them. You may want to consider professional training for your Rascal.

  • @howdini
    @howdini  11 років тому

    Oh she will. She has to establish her dominance. It will last for a while, usually 6-8 wks. They will eventually learn to cohabitate.

    She will eventually at least tolerate the kittens. She really misses the one who passed away and you have brought in 2. Give her a good 6-8 week to adjust. I know that seems like a long time, but in the mean time don't leave them alone unsupervised.

  • @howdini
    @howdini  11 років тому

    She will probably be fine with a cat. It is the cat you need to worry about. Cats have a defense mechanism in them that is instinct it will take quite some time for them to adjust to each other.

However, my dog always seems curious around cats, never agressive. There is a cat who lives on the same road as me and they always run up to eachother and sniff eachother asif they're best friends! I currently have a 2 year old female cat (holly) who is quite small for her age and I am picking up a big rescue tomcat tommorow his is 6 years old and was neutered late so is very large! I am worried that Holly would feel immediately threatened when she's see's the considerably larger Tom cat and that he would try to be the dominant cat; saying that he is very affectionate but still not quite used to being stroked. Do you have any tips to help introduce a larger cat to a small one? Cheers

    I have two dogs and a cat. I found him as a kitty. They never lived with a cat before and do not like them. But,, they are friends now. When I first brought home the kitten, they wanted to kill it. But it took 4 months of me every day sitting on my bed with them at other ends smelling each other before they accepted each other. They now sleep in the same bed, play together, and are good friends. It takes time and lots patience from the human. It can be done, I am proof.

    @57worldwide the dog is oldest pet in the household right now but we have also 2 years old cat, he and the dog are really mellow with each other and my dog likes to groom him - maybe becuase he was less active kitten and didn't tried to attack her ears all the time.
    anyway, the kitten is already month bigger and she gets along much better with the dog in the sense my dog don't growls at her when she(the kitten) tries to play with her - we came to conclusion that our dog is like a grumpy grandma

    I have a 12 year old cat, and she has lived with other cats before. We had one cat who died about 6 months ago, and they tolerated each other and could eat together so everything was fine. But I have brought two kittens home that are about 10 weeks now, and it has been 1 week since I have had them but my elder cat is still hissing and growling at them, and leaves the room most of the time that the kittens come in, after a good amount of growling and hissing. The dog is 3 years old, and good with cats, but my cats arent good with dogs. Originally, my indoor cat thought he was a dog, so we though he would do fine, but it turned out that he started freaking out about dogs, and hissed for the first time at the dog. My other one hissed once, and left the dog alone. But, my indoor cat kept coming over, hissing, and swiping missing on purpose, then running away. Once he even jumped onto her and hung on while we got him off and locked him in a room.

    I'm planning on getting a kitten very soon (for the first time), but I have two small dogs. One of my dogs is a Yorkshire terrier, and he likes chasing small animals, like squirrels and birds he sees in the yard. My parents are worried he would hurt the kitten. Do you think this will be an issue? If so, what should I do to fix it?

    Hi we have a 2yr old st bernard, we did have a cat but it went missing about 6 months ago. We did try to get another cat (bengal 7yrs) but she was not happy at all in our home so she had to go back.
    We're now looking to get 2 tabby kittens 8 weeks old. we have a fair sized house with a conservatory which the kittens can 'live' in with a glass door that they will see the dog through. do you have any tips you could share on how to make things smooth for the dog and kittens? thanks

    I'm getting a kitten very soon and I have a dog who's just under a year old. My dog is a hyper one, but during the summer she curled up with the neighbor's cats in the backyard. Not exaclty sure how she'll react inside of the house. Any help?

    A few months after we moved here, I addopted the kittens. They own the house and never go to the backyard. Of course my cats and my dogs know that each other exist because they smell, see, hear and feel each other. When I go feed the dogs, I leave the backyard door open and the cats come watch me.

    Hi, I have a cat and we adopted a dog a west highland white terrier. We just brought him yesterday and we tried having them meet but our cat started hissing and making a noise like she wanted to attack. The dog however eyed her while we were holding the two apart. He sniffed her but didn't bark just whined. I need help on what to do!!

    We are having issues I have rubbed both cats with each other's scents - they still hiss at each through the shower door (open just a few cm), and scream...face to face they do the same,then fight...fur flies, the new one (male desexed 9mths old) backs down and lays down and always incontinent of wee and poo, the resident (desexed female 2yrs old) stands and hisses after the fight ends then slowly backs away and walks off leaving the new one cowering.... what to do!??! They are both tonkinese

    Hi! I really need som help. I have one cat and he is 8 years old. For about 3 months ago we got another cat and she is 6 months old now. The two cats don get along at all, because when they first met the little one scared the big one. And after that, they chase each other (or the big one chase the little one) and I just don't know what to do and I'm afraid because I think they might hurt each other soon... s: Is there something we can do so they get along?

    I´m thinking of getting a cat, but I already have rats. Is it possible to teach a cat to leave them alone or possibly even play with them? Because I can imagine the rats being willing (they where always fine with dogs,) but I´m worried about the cat hurting them. Also, if it is possible at all, would it need to be a kitten so that it can grow up with them, or could an adult cat also get used to rats? Because I´d really prefer getting an adult cat from a shelter.

    I have a 5 month old [Calico] cat named Lucy. I got her just a few days ago and just now shes starting to get brave enough to venture out downstairs. However. She scratched at my dog when my dog spooked her. And my dog was here before the cat, how could I get them to get along? Lucy will keep on hissing at him. [Continued.]
