EGYPT: SYRIAN PRESIDENT HAFEZ ASSAD VISIT

President Hafez Assad of Syria has arrived in Egypt for meetings with President Hosni Mubarak, prompted by the election of Benjamin Netanyahu as Israel's next prime minister.
President Assad says he won't commit Syria to peace talks with Israel until he has learned more about the positions of Israel's new prime minister.
Apprehension has gripped the Arab world since Netanyahu's victory, particularly over his campaign promise to take a harder line in negotiations with the Palestinians and Syria.
The presidents of Egypt and Syria have met Monday in Cairo.
The two Arab leaders were discussing the election of Benjamin Netanyahu as Israel's new leader, and its likely effects on the future of the Mideast peace process.
Egypt was the first Arab state to sign a peace treaty with Israel, in 1979, and has since tried to mediate between other Arab countries and the Jewish state.
Mubarak says he'll wait and see what decisions Netanyahu and his government come up with .

"It will be wise to wait and see how the behaviour of the Israeli government will be. In view of his (Netanyahu's) policies we will make up our mind."

Syrian President Hafez Assad has refused to commit his country to peace talks with Israel until he has learned more about the position of Israel's new prime minister.

There are lots of things that need to be discussed. The signs are not encouraging and we have to be aware. The issue of resuming talks is not on the agenda now, and when it happens you are going to hear about it."

President Assad has demanded the return of the Golan Heights, which Israel captured in the 1967 Mideast war, as part of any peace treaty.
Netanyahu has vowed not to give up the territory, saying it is strategic to Israel's security.
Syria and Lebanon are Israel's only neighbours who have yet to conclude an agreement with the Jewish state.
Assad's visit to Egypt comes a day after he met Lebanese President Elias Hrawi in Syria.
On Wednesday, Mubarak, Jordan's King Hussein and Palestine Liberation Organization Chairman Yasser Arafat are scheduled to meet in Jordan.

على الرغم من ان حافظ الاسد ترأس نظام شمولي وقاسي إلا ان الرئس حافظ الاسد ذكي ومحنك بدرجه عالية في التعامل مع القضايا في المنطقة. وهذا ما شهد به قادة اميركا واوروبا وحتى اسرائيل
