    I've lived in this house 20 years and I have to clean out my shower or sink drain about once every four months. I had a Rigid auger that would connect to a drill. The amount of squeezing it took to make it feed was insane! When I saw the Ryobi in the store, I knew I had found its replacement tool. With the feed lock in place - ONE-HANDED operation!!! Worth every penny!!! I watched your review to see if there were any special tricks, but it is easy as you show. And something as simple as using a towellette to clean off the snake as it comes back - thanks a bunch!. Cannot believe I didn't think of that one! I used to dread snaking the drain only a little less and paying a plumber to do it. Now it's almost easy. That's what power tools are supposed to do - make your life easier. Thanks to you for the review and thanks to Ryobi!

    Bought it yesterday as I have the other 18v Ryobi tools and unclogged a bathtub drain just like you showed. Drain never has worked properly in 7 years I have owned my house. Used liquid plumber and plunger etc and would get drain somewhat open but this cleared out a clog that I had never reached. Was able to drain the whole tub from full in 2 minutes 45 seconds when before it was filling with water just taking a five minute shower and draining slowly. Well worth the $70.

    Just ran down to the box store with minutes before they closed to pick one of these up upon your review only to find my battery at home needed a charge. I am looking forward to cleaning up my tub drain. I am still trying to talk my wife into going with a hair cut like yours as an alternative.

      As a follow up what took me a hour of struggling with a hand crank auger and never unclogged only took me 5 minutes to feed, find and destroy the clog. I am very happy with this.

    Great review! I'm actually a licensed plumber and use the professional version of this type of auger nearly every day at work...I don't actually own a small auger myself, because they are very pricey for a decent one. I actually have a crappy one like the one you showed for use at home and they are a major PITA! I'm a big fan of Ryobi 18V tools and have many of them and I'm most definitely getting one of these! It looks to be pretty well designed and my experience with Ryobi has been good so far...I've never had an issue with their drills, saws, grinder, etc, so I have no doubt their usual quality is there with this tool. Now realistically, I doubt it would hold up to what I put augers through at work, but it's not meant for that kind of heavy use. Like all of the rest of their 18V line, it's made for the home owner, not for going into business unclogging drains. For what I will use this for at home, I'm sure it will be just fine.
    My question is...can you see how easily the cable is removed and replaced if/when it gets damaged? I know from experience they can get caught in drains and damaged fairly easily, and that's on the heavier duty machines like I use at work.
    BTW...for those worrying about keeping a machine like this clean...forget it! You can try, but drain cleaning machines are traditionally dirty nasty pieces of equipment...at least on the inside. Just store it in your garage, or shed, somewhere that smells won't bother you...it's nearly impossible to keep gross stuff from building up in the drum of a machine like this.

      @ToolCraze  8 років тому +1

      +Scott H Thanks Scott and thanks for the great feedback from a pro plumber. Ryobi is just like you said for home owner use and it isn't uncommon for even those in the trades and contractors to use these on job.
      I'm not sure about replacing the cable. Ill take a look at the manual and auger to see what I can find when I get a chance. My guess is that at this price it probably can't be replaced. The average user isn't going to use these as often as a plumber would - in fact I hardly used my previous one and replacing the cable was never an issue since it still has plenty of life left- just a bit rusted

    Good video. Glad you mentioned the plastic rod inside the line, or whatever the rod is made of. I couldn't make that out from the pictures that I've seen online, so that is another nice selling point. My other cheaper auger didn't have that. It's pretty much unusable now.

    Thanks for the great review. The tool costs $181 total if you don't have any Ryobi tools with ion batteries and wireless chargers. I still think it's a great investment.

    • @ToolCraze
      @ToolCraze  7 років тому +1

      Thanks
      yeah that's a lot of money if you don't have any 18v batteries or chargers. It's basically more of an add on tool for existing users. Ryobi also has starter kits with charger and battery for around $60 so that would be a cheaper option than what you paid or best value would be to pick up a cordless set with tool battery and charger and then adding this on

    Javier, gloves and a rag are co-requisites with that auger. Take a look at what the real plumbers do. They use a rag to wipe off the gunk as they feed the line back in to the drum.

    The demo was very helpful, thanks. The GOOD NEWS: this RYOBI AUGER cleared the tub drain - the clog was more than five feet out. The BAD NEWS now to auger cable is stuck in the drain! It retracted only guessing two feet. ANY ADVISE how to now not pay a plumber to get the cable out?

    • @ToolCraze

      put the auger in reverse and let the auger pull the cable out, I just had this issue this weekend. I like to pull the cable out since it's quicker but it seemed stuck if I pulled it out manually. So I just put it in reverse and out it went. It was painfully slow but it came out eventually

    Thanks so much for this review! I was on the fence about calling a pro$$ out to my house or buying another tool and possibly still not getting the job done. Your precise description of how the various functions on the auger sold me on it. That combined with the fact that I already owned many of the other Ryobi tools/batts/chargers! Your presentation of how to operate the unit was so well done, that once I unboxed it I never looked for an included manual and went right into unclogging my drain. I didn't use a stopwatch but I think it was about 5 minutes from start to finish with the finish being the few feet of water instantly disappearing! I have an open drain at the base of my 2-ton A/C for the condensation. It had clogged 5 foot down at the foundation level. Past minor leaks now confirm it was a buildup in progress, that finally stopped all drainage. It had overflowed and dumped gallons into my garage and kitchen. At least it was some of the cleanest water you can encounter. I'm expecting this tool to sit on my shelf for years till next clog. So it's nice that the multi-tool battery system of Ryobi will not disappoint me when I pull it off the shelf in 5, 10, 20 years from now. It's my first clog in this house in 25 years.

      Open it, drain it, spray a ton of WD40
      in there, close it, shake it, drain it again. This will help keep it clean and
      prevent rusting.

    • @wehall894

      Usually what I do with my cannister snakes is pull them out on my driveway, spray them with my hose, then spray some lubricating oil after the snake dries. Finally I manually push it back into the cannister. Using heavy duty rubber gloves of course (Tetanus or any septic related infections sound really bad).

    • @JeffinTD
      @JeffinTD 4 роки тому

      I like to have some water running when using an anger, both to carry away funk that gets broken free, and also to rinse the snake as it retrieves. General Wire makes a product called Snake Oil designed for drain snakes- supposed to prevent rust, displace water and lube auto-feed better and cleaner than general purpose lubes. Haven’t used it long enough to have a definite opinion but seems like a paraffin based lube?

    • @JeffinTD
      @JeffinTD 4 роки тому

      For a tub or shower I like to have some water running. Go in via the overflow on a tub. You will see the water flow increase. Sinks I like to remove the P trap and run out and back and retry. For small drains I personally prefer a mini-drum machine so I have a hand free to control and feel the cable, like Power Clear, or a (K-40 if you want professional level)

    • @JohnT2088
      @JohnT2088 4 роки тому

      Jeff in TD yeah for hand auger i can feel it but i never tried on a auto feed auger machine before. I just got this ryobi , haven’t got a chance to use it but would like to learn how can you feed when you hit the clogging point on a kitchen drain cause i don’t want to put too much force on the snake and it might kink and ruin the snake line

    • @JeffinTD
      @JeffinTD 4 роки тому

      If you hit something solid, you will feel the machine load up and the snake try to whip around. Stop feeding forward and back out slightly, or pull all the way out and see if there is debris to remove.
      Unlikely a sink snake would hit something too solid, as hair or grease would be expected. With a big machine in a main line, hitting a root might stop a cutter spinning. You hear/feel the snake try to coil in the pipe. Obviously pull back immediately. Very slowly creep forward until you hear the cutter just contacting something. Pause for a bit until that goes away and you have the normal rhythm of the cutter flipping in the pipe. You get a feel for when you should try to flush out the pipe, or feed the cutter forward very slowly until it starts contacting the obstruction...
      Nothing to loose by going too slow and gentle, except a few minutes.

      Typically 1/4” machines have a bulb auger built onto the snake. You’d have to get into 3/8 cable and probably a K-40 if you wanted to run a C cutter, spear, drop head or whatever.

    Considering hiring a plumber as a "waste of money" is a bit offensive to tradesman.

    • @ToolCraze
      @ToolCraze  7 років тому +3

      Sorry about that bro I wasn't trying to offend anyone. Nothing against tradesmen, the logic behind that statement is why hire someone if they could do the work themselves. I'm pretty sure you've applied that many ways in your life, doing something yourself that you potentially could have hired someone else to do. If you do your own landscaping at your place, you view paying someone else as a waste of money, otherwise you'd pay someone else to do it. Do you wash your own clothing? Do you wash your own car? Do you do your own painting?
      I used to do laminate flooring installs and most jobs the homeowners took it upon themselves to save cash and remove the existing flooring down to the subfloor along with removing the trim. They viewed paying someone else as a waste of money so they did that portion of the job themselves. I could look at that as an insult but I didn't and in the end I still got the job, atleast most of it.
      The fact that some people do it themselves is not an insult and there will always be work to be done in any trade

    Do NOT get a screen to catch hair!
    Had a tub that, despite having an insert to catch hair, would get clogged from time to time and was an hour or two, back-breaking, nightmare to snake.
    After the second or third time, it occurred to me that the screen might actually be *CAUSING* the clog rather than preventing them because slowing down the flow of water might make it easier for hair to catch and accumulate than if the flow was full speed.
    So, as an experiment, I took the insert out and didn't have to snake it again for the year or two I lived there.

    Very cool!! Silly question how long is that cable 25 feet?? Which is plenty but never mind I can research for myself thank you for the video.

    I just got into the Ryobi ecosystem with the 18v 10” chainsaw. This tool looks awesome! It will hopefully save me heaps in plumber costs. Thanks for the great review.

    Ryobi has come along way to keep up with mayor brands. I think they even have more cordless and cooler tools than mayor brands.

    I already have one, and I agree that it will pay for itself in one use, even if you have to get a battery and charger. I just pulled it out and needed a refresher on how to use it. Your video is much easier to understand than the instructions. I also realized that it's much easier to let the auger pull the snake out instead of doing it yourself, which will fling nasty drain water all over your bathroom. Thanks!

    • @ToolCraze
      @ToolCraze  4 роки тому

      pulling manually is much faster and you can always let the tool do the last bit to avoid flinging the drain water mentioned

    I wished they have a 50' version, I returned mine after it didn't do the trick, suspect didn't reach the clog.

      If they had a 50 feet version of this not many will buy the bigger model. Companies know this so they have two version of it.

    Thanks for the review, great video. This may be a dumb question to most, but how to you know when to stop feeding the cable down the pipe? Are you supposed to feed all of the cable, or should you feel the cable stop/hit whatever is clogging the pipe?

    • @ToolCraze
      @ToolCraze  8 років тому

      Thanks and not at all, in most cases the cable will not go any further and you know you reached the clog. A few times I've come across were the cable just feeds and feeds but you actually reached the clog and passed it.

    • @aj41510

      Right on man thanks. I just paid a plumber $80 today to unclog a bathroom sink that drained very slow. I took apart the p trap, cleaned it, and cleaned the pop up valve assembly so I knew the clog was behind the vanity in the pipes going in the wall and under my home. The plumber didn't have this ryobi auger, but he did have some sort of auger like this connected to his drill. Had I known about these devices I would've just bought this tool and done it myself. Thanks man, good work.

    • @ToolCraze
      @ToolCraze  8 років тому +1

      No problem and id say you got off easy with only $80. I had a family member pay a plumber $200 for a drain clog in the tub. If you go the diy route a cheap alternative similar to the one your plumber used can be had as little as $15 at Walmart. I think that's how much the other one in this video cost me. they're not as nice or easy to use as this Ryobi though.
      A wet dry vac (shop vac) is always good to have in hand also if you plan on fixing stuff yourself. Back when I was a new homeowner I didn't know much and my toilet was clogged, no not from what you're thinking, anyways I hired a plumber to fix it and he couldn't fix it using an auger, so he busted out a shop vac and sucked out small plastic bottle that accidentally fell inside. Once he used the right tool for the job it only took him less than 5 seconds to fix it. I felt the same way you did and thought I should've bought a shop vac for less than the price of hiring the plumber and have done it myself. Oh well, you live and learn

      I'd use a wet dry vac first and if that don't work a toilet auger

  • @Litlrasculdelia

    You should have video taped unclogging your drain rather than talking about how it was clogged!!!!!!!!

      You didn't watch the first few seconds of the video where I basically did all the required steps to unclog a drain? Or the rest of the video where I showed how to you how to operate the auger?
