Thanks for your informative commentary Mark. As a SA fan, I hope instability does not affect the mighty AB’s. I am expecting a tight affair in SA and would be very surprised if the Boks win both tests. I am privileged to have watched the AB’s play the top 10 test nations live and have huge respect for their talent and stubborn determination. Sterkte Bokke!

Fellow ABs fans who think the sky is falling need to chill. ABs backline has NOT looked sharp in any game except vs Fiji... which is not saying much. Beauden Barret has pulled our hineys from the fire to squeak past England. We fell to Argentina at home. And in the rain last week, it was our forwards who did the damage in the first 50 mins to win the game. Losing MacDonald is NOT a negative. We don't know if it will be a positive. At worst we keep the status quo.
After watching a brilliant analytical video about Robertson's Crusaders, I believe Razor will take the ABs towards a similar, near-positionless Crusader-esque style of rugby. That will take time and patience. It will also take the whole staff sharing and believing in the vision. Maybe it doesn't pan out, but if you are bumping heads with your fellow coaches 5 games into your tenure, surely its best to course correct immediately rather than plod on, butting heads, suffering defeats without making genuine progress towards your vision.
Not bringing Tony Brown into the fold with Razor was/is a MASSIVE failure on the part of everyone who was involved in that decision. THe fact he has joined SAfrica is disasterous. Beating SA has always been hard... (beyond hard)... but now... imagine you have one of NZs BEST backline coaches, a literal rugby genius, taking the Boks backs to the next level.... sheesh... this is going to be a long few next years.

It is good that MacDonald has agreed to go somewhat quietly now and not later. He and Robertson were not seeing the same gameplan on the attacking side of the ball. Clearly this was causing some confusion and tension among the coaching group, and it is better he goes before something similar filters down to the players, assuming it hasn't done so already. I would venture that Leon would have liked Sotutu to have been selected in the squad and to have played a system that is not dissimilar to that of the Blues. Leon may also be the reason why the ABs have persevered with Reiko at center and given plenty of game time to Clark, Talea, Bazz and Perofeta (when fit). Robertson is now free to select Proctor as his center and be more creative with his backfield and pivot combinations. He may even feel he has more latitude in selecting the loose forward trio and playing them in different positions to tactically deal with the Boks...Vai'i at 6, Savea at 7, and Sititi at 8 with Blackadder and Cane coming off the bench? Can't wait to see what happens next week! MacDonald is a good coach and servant of the game...he's done the right thing by resigning now and will get a good head coaching job (international or with one of the better professional club sides) without much difficulty. I wish him the best.

Quite an interesting decision and the timing sucks - Leon is very loyal so it would have been a difficult decision to make. My take is that he disagreed with the leverage given to Scott Hansen (and as you say at 9/10) in decision making processes. Looking at Scott Hansen's history, he was not an AB or regular player at a top level (2 games for the Crusaders) and a fairly lackluster coaching resume. I suspect Leon left because he didn't have total control on the backline he wanted and indecisive support from Razor. But what do I know :)

@@insiderugbywithmark I agree. NZRFU let us believe that. If it was that way then that's what they put to Fozzie. Either they go, or we sack you. So would any head coach say, "Hey ok, I'll leave cause I don't want you getting rid of them". They would have been gone if Fozzie went anyway. Leon has left as Razor was restricting his role. He is meant to be attack coach so that is his job. If Razor weren't happy, then he shouldn't have hired him. The attack hasn't performed all year. You can't blame Leon for all of it. Scott is meant to put forward the way he wants them to play. As you said, he didn't have control over the most important place in the backline. Where it is all meant to start and I don't believe selection wasn't one of the issues.

By no means is this a bad thing for the All Blacks. Clearly Razor and MacDonald weren't seeing eye to eye in regards to things within the team and setup. So it's better that MacDonald steps away now, instead of later when things could potentially get worse.
This won't affect the All Blacks in the slightest, if anything it will galvanize them even more as they head to South Africa. Especially if it means that the message and game plan around attack is clearer.

Looking forward to the 'Old Foe' battles here in South Africa over the next few weeks. On this side of the pond there is a lot of confidence and belief that the Boks will come out on top. I'm a little more reserved perhaps. AB's stumbled against the Argies but then in the 2nd test schooled them. Never rated McDonald that highly as a coach. He really only had a couple of good seasons with the Blues, both of them with Joe Schmidt looking over his shoulder. Once Schmidt moved on they immediately tanked. He also noticeably robbed Beauden Barrett of his running game, and generally seemed to sabotage his star players confidence. With only his short Super Rugby career and no international coaching experience whatsoever, youd have to say he was an odd choice for the ABs, but looking at it objectively you'd have to say Scott Robertson doesn't seem like a guy thats comfortable having someone else more knowledgeable than him on his staff, hence his unwillingness to work with Schmidt when the question came up in 2022.

That's a bit unfair on McDonald. He took an underperforming Blues team and got them to the 2022 final, won their first title in the truncated Super Rugby in 2021 and made them genuine contenders in Super Rugby. Coaches have done less and been All Black Assistants. Right now we have Scott Hansen, what has he done. When it comes down to it Razor said in his programme they had a different way of looking at rugby but still he picked him. This is on Razor, no one else. As a coach, and I was one, you don't select assistants who have a different outlook and expect them to bend to your rule. You choose people who you share philosophies with. That's how players get mixed messages, when 2 coaches look at things differently.

Thanks for creating this forum to express my long winded fan boy opinions!
Razor as head coach, decides what’s not working for him, so this is about Leon not doing a good enough job for him and this is Razor’s decision alone imo
We’ve lacked fluidity and shown weak strategy on exit plays.
‘Not aligned’ maybe also means, didn’t come up with strategies to counter line speed? because innovation there, is what most needs addressing for our back play imo.
To me it’s a very strong decision on Razor’s part, putting the team ahead of loyalty to a guy he was close to, unlike Ian Foster having to be forced into necessary coaching changes by NZR.
In the big SR games Razor consistently outcoached Leon, who doesn’t strike me as an innovator and i’ll go with Razor’s judgment on this
Leon did grow Blues after Tana but it was Cotter who took Blues to next level domination this year (a coach with wide experience coaching overseas)
Am not sure why NZR show so much confidence in Leon at a still unproven stage of his young coaching career.
If Jason Ryan could have gone to Foster whilst ‘still with’ Razor, it’s a pity Tony Brown couldn’t break with Jamie Joseph and do the same for Razor once he got the job.
Maybe committed already or maybe Razor made a poor call in not getting Browny onboard - if he had the chance?
Brown coaching Boks seems like a double blow, we don’t have him, whilst he has a deep talent pool to work with via a very large population of non white athletes, ever embracing Rugby, when they used to be only into football and in the crowd supporting AB’s lol Razor has a very big task to get us back to no.1.
With 5 away games against these top teams to come, for mine, just staying no 3 ranking seems good end of year outcome because Razor and his whole coaching team have minimal international coaching or overseas coaching experience v’s the best in modern era Ted/Hansen/Schmidt - all coming back as much better coaches from long stints coaching international and overseas, as i hope Leon will one day.

@TheRickpage I enjoyed reading this, plenty of interesting, and debatable points. One thing I may add if I can, when the 2027 RWC rocks around no one, and I mean no one will remember the 2024 Rugby Championship competition. Now is the time to experiment until the cows come home. Win, lose or draw, build depth and do it now.

@@insiderugbywithmark if im to delve further into it, without knowing of course, id say leon was overcomplicating the backline. He also had offers from other clubs that would of given him absolute power and this created a drama of sorts. Fast forward to the Argentina game where we played simply and won. Leon leaves. All nice words said as leon needs to get re-employed again. Its a positive step. Or it can be. But if we lose twice to the boks, the pressure will come on hard and razor will look bad and leon will look good even if the result may of been the same with him there. Fan pressure. So im hoping success is in south Africa for the abs so that they can move forwards clear headed

Interesting. Sad that Scott Hansen is remaining - I've seen him speak at length about the All Black's loss using only management-speak with almost no single rugby term in the whole piece. If he can speak Rugby it would be good to hear it one day. If he can't speak it, he probably can't think it either.

I see this in the context of the entire group and where they are in the cycle. There is a completely new regime in place and it's still finding its feet. The previous regime stretches way back to Hansen and co. That's a lot of continuity of organisation and philosophy to reestablish. There have been some changes in personel (though in my view not enough of them or the right ones in many cases) so why not in the coaching team? Razor is terrible in front of the press, I didn't know this about him until he became the AB coach, but I think I can interpret him okay, and I think I believe him on this - they weren't "clicking" (clicking was the word they all came up with in preparation for the media standups). Win or lose, I prefer to have Razor imposing his approach on the entire group, I don't want some disfunctional Frankenstein approach.

    • @insiderugbywithmark
      @insiderugbywithmark  20 днів тому +1

@Generative_Midi_ some good points here thanks for sharing it. I also would add this as a thought. Razor had 10 days with the team before they kicked off with England. Next to know time to bring in the changes you spoke of. Its work in progress, and if you are not on board with the plan, then there is the door. Works for me.

@@insiderugbywithmark Absolutely. But I was dissapointed with his selections there. He was way too conservative, and Perofeta aside he showed almost zero creativity (and anyway, was that a MacDonald call?). To me it was about uncertainty and a lack of confidence rather than vision. That's ok for England first up at home, but a lack of risk taking will get us nowhere.

@charleschurch4901 thanks for sharing your opinion. A little information you may not know. Scott has autism and has openly admitted all of his coaching career speaking in public is something that challenges him. He´s not weird. He is a human being doing the very best he can with the tools he has been given. His performance as an All Black coach will be assessed like all of the rest of them.

Onwards.

McDonald walking away from AB's job is a sign that Razor is taking control, he is the head coach. You need to look at the history between Razor and McDonald, to understand why I believe that Razor never picked McDonald in the first case. Going forward and selections, will also show what was wrong with the AB's attack. The fix is not going to be overnight, but it is a start, staying with a unit that fails is silly to say the least. ABs are there to win.......first, second and last.......taking part is a B/S option, ask the yappies and Rassie.
