  • Hello Everyone! In this video I go through all the steps needed to build and install a beautiful wood mantle that would be great for any fireplace! Im in a beautiful home in Castle Rock, Colorado!
So after about 20 minutes of unloading and setting up all tools I am ready to go! I start at the fireplace with my tape measure, my awesome Stabila level, and a freshly sharpened pencil to mark up the wall for my dimensions. The real thing to keep in mind is the distance from the fireplace to your new wood mantel product. Each fireplace will have its own code for spacing on heat distribution, refer to the manual.
After getting my measurements, Im back to my plethora of Dewalt tools to start cutting. All material is solid wood 1x8 or 1x6.
    - On the 12" Dewalt Miter Saw and Dewalt Saw stand I cut all pieces I need to the correct length.
-On the 10" Dewalt Table saw I get all my pieces to the correct width. I angle the saw to a 45 degree and "rip" (cutting pieces of material WITH the grain) pieces to get rid of extra seams when nailing together.
    *****PLEASE NOTE******
I am a professional at what I do..... PLEASE use all safety gear recommended for the tool being used!
Next step is to start putting the pieces together. I do have a compressor in the background and a 100 ft hose to keep that noise away! You can see the 45 degree angled "rips" coming together. Now that there are 3 (3 sided) boxes nailed together its time to head back to the fireplace.
Back at the fireplace I start with strapping the wall with material so I securely fasten the mantel to the wall. I do get out some liquid nail as well to help fasten to the wall. Im using 2" finish nails with my Hitachi 2 1/2" finish nailer. I can easy find the studs without any primer or paint on the wall just by looking at the drywall mud lines that are covering all the screws, so please find the studs to nail your top support to the wall. I fasten each leg of the mantel first and then the top face of the mantel last . I built the top face to overhang the legs all the way around to give it a "beefier" look. Last I add 1X6 to the bottom of the legs to finish it to the floor and add some character to the bottom.
Next we need to fill the holes, edges, and seams with wood filler. Now........when you head out to the store Home Depot, Ace, Lowes, etc. make sure that the filler you are purchasing indicates "Stainable" if your are going to stain any product. Some products might look natural wood color but are meant for paint, it will "flash" when you add stain. So get the right stuff for the job. Make sure to really rub in and apply the product heavy, most products will shrink when fully dry.
After 30 minutes or so pull out the sander and go at it! Just make sure to follow the grain of the wood the best you can. You can see just a slight color change in the wood when I'm sanding so be thorough and hit every spot! Im using the 20v Dewalt Sander to get the job done (HIGHLY RECOMMEND) Hit the edges with just your hand and piece of 100 grit paper, at least that's the grit I use.
After sanding is all finished up wipe down the dust and get ready for paint or stain! Im not the painter for this install so the rest is up to the homeowner!
Thank you so much for your time!

Love it!! I've always wondered how you can build a mantel from scratch. I've been thinking about building one myself. Your video was very helpful! Thank you!
