I have a 2013 D4 HSE with land rover on the bonnet. I prefer that because I'm a major fan boy of LR. I'd get a rear spare carrier and a snorkel as additional upgrades if you do real trips in it like we do here in South Africa. Thanks for the video and sharing your thoughts and vehicles!
There are comparison pictures on rear diffs to see whether you have locking or regular rear diff. (It's somewhat bigger) I have it on screen also, but don't have the locking diff.
I have just bought my second d3 hse on a 08. First mod wind deflectors (cant believe you havnt got them) i have 255 55 19 goodyear dura tec on order. X lifter next, but unfortunately i have noticed a suspension fault. When lowering it says obstuction and goes in to extended mode 30mph speed limit.guessing its something to do with a release valve. Good vid
Fun fact...the Disco 3 engine is more responsive and quicker to rev than the 3L Disco 4 engine, especially off of the mark. Also, the Disco 3 engine/gearbox package are better blended with one another. The Disco 4 is more powerful and pulls like a train but is laggier, and counterintuitive, the 8-speed gearbox isn't quite as responsive. I have both. I use the Disco 3 to tow a car trailer all over the UK, and the Disco 4 to do the same with a horse box trailer. Both are fantastic vehicles.
Now that the "Discovery" has been "downgraded" with the D5 and the "Discoveryy" logo is also on the "Sport" - I think I prefer the "Land Rover" name on the bonnet and if I eventually get a late D4 as I hope, I think I would change "Discovery" to "Land Rover" (thanks PowerfulUK). Oh - and the other things I would do straight away (PowerfulUK again) is to get the LED lamps for reverse and fog lights on the rear as well as the puddle lights and number plate light and the spare wheel theft protector.
Hi - Love the vid and just want to say I hung out for the 2015 Discovery 4 - it has the 3-litre twin sequential turbo engine which is refined and powerful, 8 speed box which is sweet, - 255 BHP and 600Nm torque. I just love it to bits, so comfy and effortless and does all the off-road stuff I need to do which is mainly forestry roads in the Highlands and Islands going to off-grid wilderness holiday cottages and the like. I am constantly impressed with the Discovery 3's ability to do pretty much what my Disco 4 can do - it is more the way mine does it is just easier and more relaxing. Better fuel economy and emissions (AdBlue and start stop) I get about 27 - 29 mpg in suburban areas or bimbling round the South Downs (where I live) but on trunk roads or above (in light traffic) can get 32 to 34 or occasionally more. It is an SE Tech spec with a few little upgrades and rock sliders - this has the less comfy but harder wearing leather which suites me as the car gets used for everything from trying to be smart at functions and family gatherings, a dog mobile and taking rubble to the tip etc. Faults since new - Mild Hybrid battery died and had to be replaced under warranty and I got a small oil leak from the transfer box which cost £60 to fix back in the day - oh! - I have done over 75,000 miles since new (well a company demonstrator being sold cheap as the Discovery 5 was just on sale (no I do not like the 5). My View - if you can afford a 2015 or 2016 Discovery 4 then go for it - if not - you will not be disappointed by the 3

Over in the states, Voyager Offroad makes even better sliders that have a little edge/platform and then the tubes stick out more, so its comfortable to stand on. I had sliders like the terrafirmas with just a bar and they hurt like hell to stand on.
Hi Jay, Really enjoying these videos on the LR3. Interested in buying one and doing some of the maintenance myself. However I understand that the Haynes guide for LR3 is only for diesel engines, mine will be petrol as I live in the US. Do you know where I could get a maintenance guide for petrol engines (V8)? Many thanks.
Hi Allen, check out this link it has pdf for all engine types onedrive.live.com/?authkey=%21AGC0h%5FifAw7UTqs&id=4BC2D89C85C7C171%2132202&cid=4BC2D89C85C7C171
Nice, relaxed and pro video, great job. 2014 8 speed does get you a lower tax cost in the UK, but comes at a big price increase. Wanted to do the same to get the lower tax and better fuel economy but ended up with a 2011 for £10.5k with 120k miles. The 2014 8 speeds then were plus £20k for the same mileage.
Very interesting comparison, if you do deffo 2014 onwards , but prices for low mileage 2016 landmark special edition not commanding over £40000. Regards mark
Thank you Jay Tee for the nice compare video. Personally for the look the disco 4 is much nicer. Specially the disco 4 from 2012 with the 8 gear auto-box. But for off road the disco 3 seems to have better angels ? This i here from a German guy (LR Time). But I stay with the disco 3 V8 . The diesels have to much problems. And cost much more to maintenance.
yep AJ is cool engine for this car, decent torque, pretty reliable, 11l/100 acceptable fuel consumption. I have this model, 2007y, engine ran 430 t.km. and still running well.
There were so many details pointed out and yet the camera never got close enough to really see what was being talked about. Hopefully in the future you’ll let your cameraman get real close so we can see what you’re commenting on. Thank you.
Definitively D4, later than 2012 - 2014 would be perfect - with SDV6. My choice will be 2014 SDV6 Luxury in Kaikura (beige) with Havana leather or better if money afford 2016 XXV !
Рік тому+1
It should say Land Rover! No question about it. I never liked the huge script “Discovery”
For the money spent to upgrade / swap all upgrades for me no especially if your rover paid for i bought my 2007 land rover at copart for 1100.00 dollars cash I've spent about 5k in upgrades cash but I have no car payment means less work on job more free time to play
I had a 2006 SE D3 manual gearbox was a nice car travel and off-road, got a 2012 Sdv6 HSE D4 and really enjoy it. Better gearbox, better finish /confort and better engine .. But D3/D4 : real Landrover 👍🏼
IMO keep the D3, more rugged exterior options than D4 unless you invest in the commercial versions otherwise all D4's have colour coded arches bumbers and door mirrors. Manual gearbox option with D3 too, obviously not as common as the automatic, but was available and I think all D4's are auto's with command shifters on the steering column on facelift models. Apparently the early models (pre SDV6) with the 3.0TDV6 were crap and unreliable compared to the 2.7 version. D3's with 5 seats didn't have air suspension nor terrain response either, the basic the better, so again IMO D3 all day.
had a d4 god that car was an endless money pit 🤬🤬🤬 I so glad I didn’t sell my d3 2008gs it’s the base model with 6 speed manual only preventative maintenance and oil change every 3000 miles or twice a year
D3 is superior, the D4 is just a softer car, more designed to be a luxury people move, the engines much weaker, and will fail. they also really aren't worth like 8k more than a D3
Fun counterintuitive facts...the Disco 3 engine is more responsive and quicker to rev than the 3L Disco 4 engine, especially off of the mark. I use the Disco 3 to tow a car trailer all over the UK, and the Disco 4 to do the same with a horse box trailer and as a daily driver. Both are fantastic vehicles, not a lot between them but the Disco 4 HSE Lux is a luxurious very well spec'd land yacht whilst the lesser spec'd 3 is more utilitarian.

most of upgrades are illegal in Russia, even if they described in vehicle specs. You'll get police bill, then you go to the court, you win here as this upgrade is described by LR, and next day you may get police bill again. There is no reason for them to blame offroaders, but they really heavy on us last 5 years, dunno why.
Embrace the D3 and don't mix and match body parts with the D4. You know stock (originality) will always be more desirable over time.
This video is more about what these guys like to look at. No talk of cranks, oil sensors etc or the choice would be D3

I think we should start a campaign to get Land Rover restored to all bonnets

interesting comparison
Which is the more reliable?
Also see LR Time comparison video 😃
I went from a 54 plate D3 to a 75k mile 59 Plate D4. Best decision I made. so far apart from servicing I've not had an issue with it, unlike my D3.

I agree D5 is a downgrade. 3 and 4 were good enough...

Hi. Interesting vid. I've a 2012 D4 with 8 speed 'box and rotary selector. Tbh I'd rather a gearstick, but it's not a show stopper.
Love the green colour, but the disco 4 diesel is a bit of a time bomb,,, the older 2.7 was a better power plant.
I love my D3. I think if I was going to upgrade then it would have to be to the 8 speed D4
Love the HUE registration 😃

Yep Landmark's are now higher price than D5's in many cases

Can anyone explain why i have a 2011 sdv6 but its 6 speed🤔
Because it was fitted to the discovery in 2012
The diff lock pic doesn't mean you have a rear one.

I have a LANd rover D3
The Discovery 3 all day long, the 4.4 V8 engine and transmission is better than the 5.0 engine or the v6 supercharged one in the 2016 LR4. CHEERS 🍻🇬🇧

D4 looks like a blingy lady's car. I don't like the perforated grille or the rear light clusters.
The best is what your budget allows.
