Also a lot of older mechanical machines are more heavy duty than the cheaper newer machines. If you want to hem jeans and have a low budget for example it often makes way more sense to get a machine from the 70's or 50's than to buy a new machine for under $300. Older machines more often have metal parts inside that can withstand a lot of stress. New machines have nylon insides that are prone to getting bent out of shape. The old machine probably won't have an automatic buttonhole and will only have two stitches, but you can do an amazing amount with just a straight stitch and a zig zag. And you so often can get them for free and the only cost is just to get it serviced if it hasn't been used in awhile

Thanks for your video. I bought a Janome in the 70s, when I first left school and I absolutely loved it. It never failed me. But I brought it in for a service a few years ago and was told it was too far gone and it couldn't be repaired, I was devasted.
I bought the Janome DC2101, which has great reviews, but I hate it. So I've decided to buy a new machine so I'm researching machines and thinking seriously about what I dislike about this machine as I hope it will give me guidance on what I want and need.

I'm determined to use my entry-level Brother (LX3850) for everything, dreams of (lightweight) outerwear persist... May I ask you what your original sewing machine was? It will inspire me to sew the world with mine... Thanks for the video, very helpful to know that stitch quality is barely perceptible.

Hi Jenni! I have a Janome Horizon Memory Craft 9400. I bought the floor model from a local dealer which cut down on the price. :)
