If you listen closely at 3:27 that one tiny little snippet is repeated in the mass appeal, some little changes to make it sound deeper etc and you have it

As a huge fan of jazz, soft jazz, etc. And a huge fan of hip hop. This tune does many things for me obviously. Vic and this collective put together an amazing piece here back in the late '70s with this one, love that classic Vic guitar, and then DJ Premier took a small slice of heaven out of here and turned it into a whole different thing with guru pretty damn slick from front to back. Today I kick back and listen to the original as I have many times. Maybe later I'll go listen to some GangStarr.

@@kcutz I don’t. I know the beauty of this tune, but I also know that - out of respect for jazz AND hip hop - it’s not the latter. It may have been APPROPRIATED for the latter, but it’s no more hip hop than “The Odd Couple Theme” when used by the Geto Boys.
@tuberider1976: It's amazing that a three-second sample from this song is the basis for a classic hip-hop song. Funny how thing works out. "Horizon Drive" reminds me of this one soothing jazz music track in Sega's classic arcade game Out Run.

Sounds a bit similar to my experience. In early 1982 Vic came to Melbourne with a faculty of jazz educators to host a 5 day (all day) jazz clinic. I was 22 and into rock and blues (and developing a love for the jazz sound and 'fusion' in particular). I had to audition before the 1st day of the clinic - as everyone was then placed in either the 'beginner/intermediate' or 'advanced' student classes. Vic wanted me to play a blues as a solo (chord melody) and I had no clue then, and he then just played stuff that blew my mind. I didn't make the 'advanced' class ! :-) It was a great experience being tutored by players of that standard for 5 days. The other guitarist faculty member present was Steve Erqiuaga. We were allowed to bring recording devices of the sessions. I should have converted all these to digital, but only converted a few samples (regretfully).
