It's a little fascinating how reality overtakes ideas in Sci-fi writing. I put together the pitch for a fictional MMO centered on the idea of the player's avatars as separate in story/world entities that could specifically be out acting in the world while the player was offline. (A plot point in the story built around this was the automated assessment of a players death vs them simply stopping playing.) Now here we are, already at the point where a limited form of that is possible to implement. (Maybe not efficient enough to be worth it yet, but it CAN be done outside of a lab.) The biggest abuse of this tech I can see from MMO developers/publishers is false traffic, using such playerbots to prevent the impression of a ghost town forming, especially in early areas of a MMO. Without marking them as bots, naturally.
I agree with you... I feel like humans can accomplish just about anything they can fathom if they are given enough time. Warp drive? We'll conquer physics eventually (if we weren't hard on a path of self-destruction). That's the thing that I find most fascinating and concerning about superintelligence... what can be accomplished that we CAN'T fathom?
