You know, this Bills squad may have lost 4 straight Super Bowls, but they did win 4 straight AFC Championship Games.
F the bills..shoulda been the raiders, broncos, dolphins, chiefs or oilers in those super bowls.
LOL shoulda woulda coulda......I seem to remember Buffalo stomping the raiders 52-3 in the championship game...Raiders? LOL man.
azucho98 wooah man it was only 51 to 3 not 52 to 3, cut the raiders some slack 😂😂
Whether you like the Bills or not the simple fact is that going to four straight Super Bowls will never be repeated again. I know-I know, they also lost four in a row, which has historic implications too. Still, was never done before the Bills did it and will never be done again. As for the best Super Bowl showing by the Bills, Scotty Norwood just was not very accurate beyond 45 yards. So it wasn't a shocker he missed against the Giants. And remember, it took the Bills over 2 minutes to even get a shot at trying to win it with a kick from 47. I remember saying to myself "let's go, this is taking way too long." The players and coaches all knew that Norwood was inaccurate from that distance. Overall, without analyzing each Super Bowl loss, the Bills were out-coached, especially against the Giants and Redskins. They had better talent against both of those teams. And arguably, the Bills should have been more competitive against the Cowboys. If a team gets beat by a score of 52-17 there is a complete breakdown of execution and coaching. One last thing: I only hope before I die that the Bills find another era of winning and get to another Super Bowl. So sick of the Patriots. But again, you cannot say enough about a team developing a winning culture and excellence in their front office, coaching, and overall organization.
That Bills team probably had more talent than the Redskins in 1991...but that '91 Redskins team simply played better as a team. The Bills had NO CHANCE to win win SB XXVI. That Redskins team was dominant right from the start of the season, and lost only 2 games by a total of 5 points. I remember watching that team out of the gate....and they had a special look all season long.
I have said that for years that NO ONE will ever go to 4 straight S B's again! (someone always names a team like Denver Broncos and other's, and I say NO! They didn't go 4 in a row!). Also think about the resiliency of that team. To lose a Bowl by ONE point,(still a record), and to get over it, and come back the next year! Then to lose again in the big one a second year in a row...But STILL fight back for a third...then a 4th. It's easy to make fun of the loser, but you have to look at the whole deal, not each game by itself. The Bills beat up every team in the reg. season, but never gelled in the Super Bowl after the first loss, and I still think they psyched themselves out after the 'Wide Right' loss against the Giants, cause really, if you consider the players Buffalo had, on both sides of the ball, offense and defense, it was one of the most talented NFL teams ever to take the field. ALSO, about Norwood...They A.) should have got him another 10 yards closer! and B.) Scott was money, even up to 45 or 47 yards, he seldom missed but he was NOT as accurate on GRASS fields, and was used to Astro Turf. If you look at his stats, he is money on Astro Turf and his numbers fall off a bit on grass fields. SB 25,(first Bills one) was on GRASS.
@@brianmucha6426 Giants fan here (I come in peace). That 90s Kelly team was fun to watch and hella talented, and it's a damn shame they didn't get a ring. But I also believe that sometimes a team "curse" can actually be a blessing in disguise. Look at the Red Sox. The Cubs. The Eagles. Those curses come to define a team and its fanbase. Look at the Bills fans now, they're fucking insane. They love that team, through thick and thin. Even though they've mostly sucked. Even though they've had to share a division with arguably the best dynasty in NFL history. Buffalo's time will come, and all I have to say is this: when the Bills do finally win a Super Bowl, holy fuck call the national guard because it'll be the happiest, craziest riot you'll ever see.
Yeah there will be people mocking the losing SB’s history, but those Bills always inspire me as true life examples. In real life, no one will hand a trophy to you in any career. You have to fight for it. With some luck, a small number of people get their trophies of career. Majority of many need Bills as inspiration to press on. I was a young grad student in Buffalo during that era. Man, for my whole life I love to tell those 90’s Bills stories.
As a Broncos fan, I was glad you lost all 4 (at the time) because people stopped making fun of Elway and the Broncos for losing three. It was tough back then until the 97 season. I’m routing for the Bills (and Browns) this year though. Good to see some good teams out of the AFC East instead of just the Patriots
I remember watching this as a youngster everyone was rooting for Kansas City because of Joe Montana and Marcus Allen

Football in the 90s was my fondest era. I loved my hometown team the Miami Dolphins. Shula and Marino were iconic. It's a shame they never got it done together. The Bills were a huge reason why Marino never won a ring. The Dolphins did their share of choking against other teams too. The most heartbreaking loss in Dolphins history probably was in '94 Divisional Game against the Chargers. That was one of the their best teams and they were favorites to get to the Super Bowl.

Actually, it's simple. The Bills were loaded with so many superstar players, but one inept coach. Marv Levy may have won in the CFL but never did anything in the NFL. The egos of the players was legendary. Going out and partying before the Super Bowl was the norm. They needed a Mike Ditka type coach that could keep them in line with tough discipline. Marv was too soft. He also wasn't a tactician. Great players, poor coach.

@Beyond Your IQ Yeah, and it would've been a Texas-sized Super Bowl between the Cowboys and Oilers.
Super Bowl win or not, the Bills were a great team. They were the equal of the Giants in Super Bowl XXV and they were banged up against Washington. The young Cowboys were a truly special team and might have won three straight Super Bowls if only Jimmy Johnson and Jerry Jones could have contained their egos.
4 straight Barry Switzers first year the Cowboys (they were not today's Cowgirls back then)were beaten in the NFC title game by the bought and paid for 49ers which is the scandal that eventually caused DiBartolo to have to hand the team over to Ted York. The Cowboys got their last one under Switzer a year later finally getting revenge on Pittsburgh for the 2 losses in the 70s. But according to Troy Aikman, Switzer was Lax and that's why all the partying had started. Aikman said he actually had to coach the team on the field a few times to keep them focused. Yep. Then, if that wasn't bad enough, Montana gets hurt early in the 3rd quarter. It would have been a different game if they had come out after halftime, after scoring a touchdown, only down by 7 and getting the ball back right away. Montana was always a better second half player and 7 points was nothing. Especially when you're playing a team like Buffalo, who's defense is already on the field longer than most teams, because of the hurry up offense. If Montana could have stayed in and kept his offense on the field longer, Buffalo's defense would have gotten tired later on

In my opinion, this stands as one of the greatest upsets in NFL history, as well as one of the most underrated...With Joe Montana leading the way on offense and handing off to Marcus Allen, I thought for sure the Chiefs were the team of destiny for this particular year and heading to the Super Bowl. In retrospect, I underestimated the resiliency of this Buffalo Bills team...
You have a lot of company. Part of the reason we fans look back at the 1986-2000 era with such fondness is because we as Buffalonians and expats were supposed to be happy about taking crap from people and ask for them to beat us to death as bloody pulps as penance for our existence. Instead, we were defiant and fought back all the way, "Let's piss them all off!" t-shirts and all. >:-)
How can you underestimate the AFC representatives of the previous 3 Super Bowls?
Montana was past his prime and so was Marcus Allen. Not the dominant players that they were in the 80s. They were still good players and good enough to make the AFC title game, but still not as good as Buffalo.
Kansas City were +3 point underdogs going in to Rich Stadium, where the Bills had never lost a playoff game. And they were 3x in a row AFC Champs. The only upset was that Joe didnt finish and keep the loss respectable.

So! Bottom line is that we won 4 SBs during the 80s. Four, just in case you cannot read the number 4. The 85 playoff game, 17-3, because our usually great receivers dropped so many passes. The 86 playoff loss was indeed to a better NY Giants team. Not so, 1985 or 1990. Also, Belicheat most likely honed his cheating skills while he was with the criminals.

My take on a Thurman Thomas/Emmit Smith comparisons. IMO the Bills' ball security issues (which played a big part in those SB losses) were coaching related, obviously Thomas and his fumbles is a big part of this equation. I think that Smith had the mental/team player edge. Thomas definitely seemed less of a team player, and his attitude after his 3rd Quarter fumble/TD in SB 28 absolutely wrecked any chances the Bills had to get over the hump. But as far as pure skill set, with Thomas's receiving skills, and considering that Smith had much better blocking, I give Thomas the nod on that one. Let's argue!
These are gems

This Bills team in '93 is just as amazing as the '91 team. Both of them were officially Ranked 27th on Defense. That was the official Ranking by the NFL. And that is 27th out of only 28 total teams no less. And both teams made it to the S.B.
That bad defense is why they ultimately lost all those super bowls the old saying goes defense wins championships and the bills couldn't be anymore proof than that
This Bills team was 5th in scoring defense, while 91 was 19th. I'm guessing the difference in scoring defense was that Bruce Smith played a full season, while he was out for most of '91.
The defense gave up lots of yards which is what ranked them 27th. They were a bend-but-don't-break group. The "weakness" of the defense was also a product of the offense they ran. They ran the no-huddle, racked up the yards and scored points which allowed the defense to take chances, but it also put that defense on a field a lot. They had great talent on defense, but when you're out there more often than not I don't care who you are, you're going to get tired.
Conversely you look at the Giants and their famous 40+ minute time-of-possession against Buffalo in that first Super Bowl and there's no question their defense was aided by their conservative, ball-control oriented offense. They also played great special teams and rarely made mistakes. Complimentary football.
