Well, this was certainly a delightful surprise. First, I wasn't expecting a performance of this high calibre and second, the beautiful tone of this 96 year old Steinway piano was even more unexpected. I presume the hammers on this piano have been replaced and voiced. This video is a jewel in all regards, thank you for sharing it and thank you for the beautiful and professional performance. I actually listened to this performance three times just to make certain I was hearing what I thought I was hearing.
The hammers shanks and hammer flanges were all replaced about 7 years ago right here in my small shop. Everything else about this piano is original. The soundboard and the pinblock are still in great shape. This piano tunes up more cleanly that many larger and new Steinways that I work on. I've had many fine pianists here playing in my shop, but none as talented as Mathew. I was here as the recording was being made and as you might imagine it was even more wonderful live.
The piano Mr. Soeghay is playing was originally owned by my father. When he was still a teenager in the 20s, his parents took him to the Steinway store in New York City where they boight him the piano. Mr Soeghay plays it beautifully. Dad would be pleased by the restoration and the performance. Thank you, Heide (Exner) Larson
Just when there is so much chaos and ugliness in the world there is the immortal, irrepressible Chopin! Thanks, Matthew for this scintillating and dynamic performance!
This was a very beautiful performance, Matthew! I too look forward to your lessons! Hopefully they will teach us the skills to play this piece like you. :)

Look at the peeling paint, the age of this piano seems to be real 😂

Thank you for sharing that story Heide. I have enjoyed having this piano for these several years. I didn't realize that I was only the second owner.

Both the piano and the performance were impressive! Great contrast, clarity and speed, especially in the re-entry part.
1927 is when TV was invented, first time movie had sound, Mount Rushmore was being carved. What a piano!
