I was pulled over on my ebike for and unrelated issue. I had a crazy co-worker following behind me for miles, and the cop pulled me over and was like, "Do you know who that is following behind you. The officer was just checking on my safety, but he didn't care about the fact I was riding an ebike.
The laws haven't really caught up with reality yet. Because so many states STILL don't have bike lanes. I asked a cop and he told me as long as I'm not speeding and I'm following the laws of the road, also staying to the right, it's fine and no one will bother you..But basically it's the kids bringing heat to the culture. Riding without mirrors, without proper helmets, signal lights or brake lights and not obeying the rules or stop signs & red lights..is what brings attention.
im new to ebikes, i love mine and im 33, thisallows me to travel whilst not driving because im too anxoius to drive . all i see on youtube is vids of kids doing wheelies at 20 mph between cars its crazy .
I was driving up a long, steep hill at night where the speed limit is 40 mph. I was driving 50 mph and a guy in all black including black motorcycle helmet in a black Suron passed me at a good 20 mph faster than I was going making his speed probably 70 mph.
I was pulled over for going 30 mph in a 25 mph zone in a neighborhood. The officer didn’t seem to know much about the different classes of e-bikes. He stopped me simply because I was speeding, which was fair. We ended up chatting about e-bikes for about half an hour, especially my Wired Freedom, which I was riding at the time. In the end, he just reminded me to slow down and stick to the speed limits in the city.
The police have seen me going 40+ mph on an electric unicycle. If they don’t care about that, they certainly don’t care about a bike throttling to 28. I’ve never heard of anybody getting a ticket on a bike except for enforcement efforts on the really busy bike paths around here, and to my knowledge they haven’t done that in a long time. Though I also haven’t watched local news in 10+ years, so it could have happened and I’d not have heard it. I’d be shocked if any ebiker going less than 30 on a road has ever been ticketed for a speed related charge. Maybe for flagrantly running a red light or something, but I don’t think cops care about vehicles on a road going less than 30.
I think many are missing the point as the classes of ebikes really doesn't matter as the motor size max of 750W or less is a bicycle per Federal Law. I got "pulled over" doing about 26mph & I took the chain ring, chain, derailleur, shifter & the cable off to save weight. Both my crank arms now hang down. The cop that pulled in behind me where I live just wanted to know where I got the ebike, how long ago, did I like it & how much did it cost.
The thing about coming up to stops signs in a bike vs a car is that in a car you got like a good 6 feet in front of you before your head actually pops up around the corner . This isn’t a problem in a bike where visibility is wide open and unhindered by pillars and reflective glass
Yeah but people on bicycles think cause Stop signs are for 'road usage' IE cars. They can basically ignore it and fly by. (Which isn't true. No matter riding street or sidewalk.) I seen people blow threw stop signs like they didn't exist cause they think their bike isn't law bound to it as a car. But it's for Everyone.
I would say if a cop said the Ebike was illegal then the cars are also illegal they can run over 100 mph and it doesn't make any logical sense with the Moron Laws!
There’s a 20-minute police interaction video here on my channel from a year ago where I was approached & detained (not really pulled over) after having been seen slowly and safely riding my electric hyper-scooter. Stand-up (no seat), high-power, electric kick-scooter in my small hometown in NE Georgia USA. In California at least, class 3 e-bikes that have a throttle, the throttle would only go to 20, so the only way to get up to 28 would be the pedal assist.
Class 3 don't have throttles. Unless you modified it. Which wouldn't limit the throttle power sadly. So the only choice would be to E-bike conversion another motor kit system. Like IE put a front hub on and only use that for throttle. While the rear for higher speed would be for PAS. Plus Class 3 are also forced to have a Speedo system on them. Class 1-2 don't need it. I put many thousands of miles on my ebikes commuting to work. Never was stopped by police but had one very close call. One day when going pretty fast on a back road I was surprised by a Motorcycle CHP who suddenly appeared, paced me and looked over the DIY Kit Greyborg ebike I was riding, and he then took off. I think he was looking for a gas engine and when he didn't see one he continued along on his business. He seemed to be in a hurry and it wasn't a road that CHP generally patrols. It was a great commuter, I set mine up with Moped wheels and tires to avoid flats but it was hard to pedal and very heavy. It had long range and climbed the steep hills we have quite well. It really depends where you are, I've heard that in some small towns the ebikes get hassled a lot, but in most places the police have a lot of higher priority concerns. Ride smart, have fun and be safe. :)
for best traction in stopping.. Always use both front and rear brakes equally... using only one, can cause that wheel to lock up and skid.. Especially when the roads are wet.. and the many max/streetcar rails are incredibly dangerous when dry especially dangerous when wet. you will find yourself face planting on the ground if you don't take those rails (slowly) at a 90* angle.
I got pulled over by LA County Sheriff. I was on my Super73 ZX on the bike lane. I was coming from work this Happened in Lakewood California. My bike isn't modified. They told me to slow down. Honestly here in California and I'm speaking LA Area (long beach) people do stupid things. Mostly kids. Toooo many group rides.

Only time i seen it is on a surron in NY city. And it makes sense because they are electric dirt bikes. And his was taken but he got it back just had to pay towing and stuff. It was on a group ride and he was older not riding crazy
In Los Angeles you can even cross the red light right in front of them and they're okay with it, I believe they got a bigger fish to fry then go after a e-bicycle rider
Pretty sure in most states the law says you can't do more than 20mph on throttle only. Many bikes are programmed from the factory to shut the power off at 20mph on throttle only because of these laws. So if you're doing anything above 20mph and not pedaling, technically you have a illegal e-bike. You need to pedal to get to 28mph. But maybe laws probably vary from to to state, I don't know.
@oregonebikermark8953 yes, I'm talking about Class 3 ebikes. They are the ones that can do 28mph. If they also have a throttle it's supposed to be restricted at 20mph, to be legal. But there's ebikes such as yours that can go much faster than that on throttle only. Mine can do 40mph on throttle only, but I never go that fast.
I'm being charged with driving a motor vehicle no permit from a ride programme stop here in Onterrible. No functioning pedal kit was on my bike at the time.
To be honest, I haven't tht experience, but someone would have to be really stupid or want cops attention to be pulled over in a bicycle. Cops here in Kansas have more important chit to worry abt. Tht is my opinion. 😊 Happy riding fam.
To keep it simple there are a lot of bad riders and drivers out there especially all over youtube. Children have these things and mamy people call anything electric an ebike despite the wattage being high enough to accelerate pass 35mph+ and a lot of parents Ive seen feel like their kid been riding dirt bikes so an ebike is nothing so they dont care about watts or speed.
Hi Mark Thinking out loud here , I believe the elephant in the room on these Moped / motorcycle style E Bikes new laws down the road , will be determined by the seat design and the fixed seat hight . Moped style seats that do not raise and lower on a independent seat post will not have the same freedom to ride as a none ebike or ebike with a adjustable seat post, on bike paths , trails , and street protected bike lanes . Stay tuned my friend it’s coming sooner than we think .
California Covid lost my business and my health lost my car and there are no busses in my area so electric alternative vehicles are how I am able to live.
I like to pedal backwards when I am using full throttle. I will get the weirdest looks!😂 Texas is still the Wild West when it comes to E-Bikes. As long as you obey the traffic laws. No problem. They got a lot of other more important things to do.
I am sure it will be an unpopular opinion, but I think anything with a throttle (class 2 included) and that goes over 20 mph needs to be treated as a moped, and registered as such, before things really get out of hand. Class 1 should be the only electric bicycles allowed to be considered a bicycle. I have a Wired Freedom, two Lectric Xpress 750’s, along with two class 1 mountain bikes in the garage, so I am not a bike hater. I just know how legislation can go and hurt the industry overall from laws being made by ignorant people. Already seeing several videos of people blasting down multi use pathways weaving in and out of people and other cyclists. You can’t honestly think that people won’t get fed up with that. If you look back 40+ years ago, they had several gas powered mopeds had pedals too, that you could pedal them without the engine running. Not really any different than today’s e-bikes with throttles besides gas vs electric, so why should it be any different nowadays.
You should be ticketed. You obviously ran a stop sign. Shame on you for proving that so many e- Ike riders are insulting the road laws with this annoying behavior.
You are all outlaws until you need licenses, insurance and running lights like other motorcycles. Let's be honest you all ride them because they are free except for the cost of the bike and electricity.
@@oregonebikermark8953 I would get a Surron if there were places to ride it. As it stands, I am quite happy to pedal my mountain bike on trails people can't hike.
let me help you out here no police have normally not been pulling ebikes that was correct but there are many many more bikes on the road and some problems. California is in the process of finalizing there law witch most many states will follow well because they did all the work so look at the one thing the law says that the police will now enforce and that is NO EBIKE ON PUBLIC ROADWAYS WITH WITH A MOTOR OVER 750 watts very easy to enforce for police they are pulling over more this motor limit will work because it is like the 49cc gas scooter law that we have being living with for 50 years and obey over 49cc you need to register it and you need a M license so this bike is illegal now remember if you get into an accident god for bid you are screwed the layers will take your money and if you are pulled over you will be fined because so many are on the road a lot of drivers and walkers are complaining forcing law enforcement to clamp down so good luck in the future with a 1000 watt motor or more I wood not want that itch but here just tell these people buy our current federal this bike with a motor over 750 watts is illegal please read the laws so reads please read your state laws before you buy your bike buy legal ride safe and have a blast riding your legal ebike I am
I think they should force companies selling ebikes to make them whatever limit they want to make it legal. Anyone who tries to modify the bike is liable for now making the bike illegal.
Are you in Cali or Ore? Look like Oregon grey rain clammy cold classic Oregon day.. My Ebike 52V, is being shipped as I type. Plan to use it on my short hops to stores, get groceries, or HD / HF store etc. Calculated bike cost vs car wearing, definitely worth it. 20MPH is way fast enough IMO in city, faster isn't needed and the crap-debris in the sides where we ride makes me want to limit my speed. Curbs and driveways Up/Down etc. Definitely helmet, seriously, “Whats your brain worth”. ?? I looked at the ones that go 44MPH and are small tires, dual motor with 80-120 ranges. So tempting to get yet totally overkill. I would HOPE others Bikers will obey traffic laws, You as a bikers any kind ARE subject to ALL traffic laws!!! Be cautious and courteous to others. Especially when the roads are wet.. and the many max/streetcar rails are incredibly dangerous when dry especially dangerous when wet. you will find yourself face planting on the ground if you don't take those rails (slowly) at a 90* angle.
I use both, but was using my regen breaking. Thanks for the tip.
Who are the legislators passing these laws …. Boycott them !!

Wow, I didn't think the Super 73 goes much above 30mph if that even.
@oregonebikermark8953 no they don't. I'm 250lb bike struggles to make it to 26mph
@@victorduran4838 Thanks for commenting.
I've bin pulled over on my bicycle many times, only peddle bicycle no ebike! I'm in Ontario Canada tho..OPP & Durham PD is one of the worst!
I rode bike there in Uxbridge (Durham Region) many years ago. Never pulled over.
@oregonebikermark8953 That's funny cuz I got pulled over in uxbridge several times 🤣 one time I had ridden to port Perry and back and got pulled over half way up the hill across from foxbridge golf course! 😅🤣 he couldn't wait till I got to the top of the hill!🤙👊💪
@@rfiskillingussoftly6568 I've ridden from Sanford Ont. to Caesarea Ont. without any issues. Times are different now i guess.
@oregonebikermark8953 This was in 2012 in uxbridge, in 2020 I got pulled over twice in Fenlen falls too..but everytime I got pulled over.. it was to run my ID! I'd really luv one of those peddle assist bikes now lol older with a long list of injuries lol! Happy Holliday 💪👊🤙
Only time i seen it is on a surron in NY city. And it makes sense because they are electric dirt bikes. And his was taken but he got it back just had to pay towing and stuff. It was on a group ride and he was older not riding crazy
Thanks for the info on the Surron.
Just found your channel. Nice ride. MN stop sign = "yield." Traffic lights must be obeyed. Ebikes are classified as bicycles.
Thanks for watching!
In Los Angeles you can even cross the red light right in front of them and they're okay with it, I believe they got a bigger fish to fry then go after a e-bicycle rider
You would think so.
States use class levels for ebikes.
California, do what we say, ignore what we do.
Cause it’s their fault anyways !!
I'm being charged with driving a motor vehicle no permit from a ride programme stop here in Onterrible. No functioning pedal kit was on my bike at the time.
Wow, thanks for sharing.
@@devilselbow try not to sound like a beta more.
Youre a fascist @devilselbow
Your title stated it as a fact. I expected a bit more research and feedback than you asking the question all over again.
The point of this video was to see if you or someone you know has ever been pulled over on your ebikes by cops.
I never get bothered.
Enjoy the ride!
To be honest, I haven't tht experience, but someone would have to be really stupid or want cops attention to be pulled over in a bicycle. Cops here in Kansas have more important chit to worry abt. Tht is my opinion. 😊 Happy riding fam.

@@oregonebikermark8953 Absolutely fam.
Another untapped revenue stream.
I guess.
My opinion its not about safety its all about revenue.
Yep yep
YEP!
You make some good points, thanks.
You can only ride in the bike lane …. Full of trash , trees , broken sidelines , thin as your wheel.
So basically you're asking for a cop to pull your ass over
Huh! I'm asking if anyone has had there ebike pulled over by cops.
What if moped style ebikes pivot to adjustable seats? Who knows.
I think that’s where the market is heading, I believe it’s not a speed thing , people are hung up for some reason on the optics of these bikes .
@@PaulTammaro The future of ebikes is fluid.
California Covid lost my business and my health lost my car and there are no busses in my area so electric alternative vehicles are how I am able to live.
I see youguys running red lights. Stop complaining until yall follow the laws!
There ya go.
I like to pedal backwards when I am using full throttle. I will get the weirdest looks!😂 Texas is still the Wild West when it comes to E-Bikes. As long as you obey the traffic laws. No problem. They got a lot of other more important things to do.
I like the pedaling backwards. lol
I live in Texas and cops always find a reason to mess with people here. Hopefully that won’t be the case when I get my graffiti X

We shall see how ebike laws evolve over the next year.
I would think a cop setting at his speed trap could watch you and radar you, then ask himself if it is worth his time.
Wonder if coasting downhill over speed limit would be OK?
Not here in Long Beach California
Thanks for commenting.
You should be ticketed. You obviously ran a stop sign. Shame on you for proving that so many e- Ike riders are insulting the road laws with this annoying behavior.
on this video you did not come to a complet stop. you should get a TICKET
Oregon has the yield law for ebikes and bicycles. No Ticket here.
I would not stop ...
Enjoy the ride!
You are all outlaws until you need licenses, insurance and running lights like other motorcycles. Let's be honest you all ride them because they are free except for the cost of the bike and electricity.
I think you have to be careful grouping (you all rider) together. Thanks for commenting.
@@oregonebikermark8953 I would get a Surron if there were places to ride it. As it stands, I am quite happy to pedal my mountain bike on trails people can't hike.
@@JoeSmith-ig3pr If I did lots of off road riding I too would like a Sur-ron.
let me help you out here no police have normally not been pulling ebikes that was correct but there are many many more bikes on the road and some problems.
Listen I only ride the defense industry I think the ebike should go no more then 20 MPH
Listen buddy your PDX goes over 45 mph you need a license anything over 20 you should have a license license and license plate and insurance
What if you ride 28mph is that worthy of being pulled over if I only throttle? 28mph is 28mph whether you pedal or throttle. Cars can go 100mph.
HI I'm Jerry of Santa Cruz Hi no I have not been putting me over I ride a Velotric Discover 1 and no 2 I only go with the throttle 15 mph only buddy .
