I have to say, this is THE most significant playback improvement that MuseScore has released in recent years. It’s that good. This is unrealistic. Not all fortes are the same. There doesn’t seem to be any way of changing the increase or decrease in hairpin crescendo markings either. I guess what’s happened is that in order to give us a crisper, more elegant and realistic sound, some compromises had to be made. Sure. First I would definitely export from MuseScore as MIDI (or MusicXML) and import into the DAW. I made a video about that process here: ua-cam.com/video/OHW2xxNyWBY/v-deo.html But with these great sounds I would probably export from MuseScore as a WAV (or perhaps one WAV file for each instrument, known as stems) too and then synchronise them in the DAW. That way I can choose to use MuseScore's sound for any instrument or route the MIDI to the DAW's VSTs (something like Sptifire's BBCSO Discover) or even just add whatever I want over the top of that. Complete freedom. I'll do a video on it if you'd like!

Personally, I’m going to keep using musescore 3 for most things for a few reasons: 1: muse sounds have way too much dynamic contrast and Idk how to change it. The mezzoforte is basically inaudible but forte is like blasting. 2: it lags a lot while writing in it, and my computer is not the best so it’s pretty bad. 3: no musescore drumline
My gripe is in the brass and percussion sounds and variations. It’d be great having good brass without having to manually pick the right sound font each time

So I'm not new to Musescore, But I am new to the concept of VST. I want to improve the sounds of my music and I'm trying to figure out about these VST software applications. One has caught my eye, JABB 3. So if I purchase and install this product, Will musescore recognize it and then use the sounds directly from that application? I would be able to use the musescore mixer to assign instruments to the JABB instruments? I don't want to make a significant financial investment into something only to find out it doesn't work the way that I am thinking it should. Any advice on using VST with musescore would be helpful.
Hi. The fact that MuseScore 4 can use VSTs is amazing. However, a large part of the point of VSTs is control over precise details in the sound with keyswitches and CC lanes (controller lanes). This is in the plans for MuseScore 4 but is not available yet. So yes, you will be able to assign an instrument from the mixer and you should hear the right sound at the right pitch (and some dynamics should work too), which is great for composing and arranging. If you want to create a proper mockup of your work you could certainly start in MuseScore 4, but will probably need to move over to a DAW for fine control of the parameters. I hope that helps.

The strings absolutely kill it but there’s issues with a lot of other instruments, for example with the “keys” it happens very often that if it starts with a group of really fast notes (like semiquavers) it completely skips that part because it takes too long to “start up” and doesn’t get on track until later on. And there are also many other bugs related with the playback system but I’m certain they will all be worked on!
Yes, that issue of not starting at the beginning has been bugging me (excuse the pun). It's like there's a short fade in that occurs with every playback event. Hm, I wonder if that is actually the problem? I'll have to check if anyone has reported it on GitHub.
@@mccoydtromb yeah I think its a problem with the new midi system where they actually try to read the sheet in advance to give more expression to the playback and maybe it’s what causing the starting delay but I don’t know I’m no developer
I just tried it out today....and I believe that's exactly it. If I changed a note or articulation, and tried to begin playback, it wouldn't play correctly if you started playback directly where you made the change. While I'm here, I'll say that the sounds are beautiful, some of the articulations are wonky. Staccatos tend to be too loud, as well as any other articulation mark that denotes separation. There are velocity layers it seems, which is great...but if you have a rest during a phrase that has a crescendo, it doesn't smoothly pick up the swell after the rest, it plays a very noticable timbre difference.. especially on the horns. Lastly, some ornamentation plays back in a strange way, while grace notes are inaudible. I still love it though!
If I remember correctly, you can select a bar then press esc to unselect. Then you can play notes on a connected MIDI keyboard (or perhaps the onscreen keyboard) to hear the notes of that instrument.
With nothing selected go to the Properties panel, select Empty Staves. It won't hid on the first page by default. To change that go to Style Settings>Score>Don't hide empty staves in first system, untick it
Not yet! This is one of the features many people are hoping for now that there are fantastic sound libraries to work with! Perhaps using something like Jack to synchronise playback? I'll have to do some research...
I think that musescore 4 functions much much worse and a lot more awkward to use than 3. This is due to errors such as lag, buttons being slow and when i try to play the song from a certain point nothing plays. The new version tries to make it look nicer by sacrificing how it feels to use.
Nice, but not really that good. I'm glad that MuseScore has improved those sounds, but those strings do not really sound like concert strings. I am curious as to how solo strings sound. My guess is not all that good.
But what is terrible about M4 currently, which so many months after its release still hasn't been fixed, is that it crashes each time and corrupts files - even to the degree of absolute no-restore state. That is just outrageous.
I meant the platform has some kind of problem with MuseScore 4. I know for a while Mac users were having problems, and I know the crash bugs do keep cropping up on various systems. I had one the other day where one laptop in my class of 4 kept crashing whenever I plugged one of the MIDI keyboards in. Just that one!
@@mccoydtromb I wonder, however, if the reverb is planned to be made controllable in the future. In MS3 there was, at least, an attempt done in that direction.
I hope you've found the workaround to get your notepad back. I'm so relieved to have it working again. And it's a pretty easy workaround. Do you mean guitar tabs, or tab on the computer keyboard?
In my experience with muse sounds, jazz does not sound good at all. The trumpets have a limited range, and accent tenuto markings are played incorrectly, but i love almost all the other sounds on other compositions.
It's a pity you had this experience, but I suspect you have given up on MU4 too early. There may be some teething problems, but most can be solved by changing some settings. Not yet! This is one of the features many people are hoping for now that there are fantastic sound libraries to work with!
Perhaps using something like Jack to synchronise playback? I'll have to do some research...
@@mccoydtromb Ok, Thank you!
I hope you saw my video on this! ua-cam.com/video/bz3fRydmnDk/v-deo.html
@@mccoydtromb I will see it now
Musescore 4 is so much better, it sounds like people actually playing it rather than being robotic, especially with string, brass, and dynamics
when will musescore 4 be relesed
I think that musescore 4 functions much much worse and a lot more awkward to use than 3. This is due to errors such as lag, buttons being slow and when i try to play the song from a certain point nothing plays. The new version tries to make it look nicer by sacrificing how it feels to use.
It's still in early beta and is not intended for regular usage yet, those issues will be rectified in time for release.
It’s really annoying how I can’t use the numpad to change each note’s duration
@Hohhot Did you find the workaround for getting your numpad control back?
MU3 sounds tinny whereas MU4 sounds more natural.
I love that you can use VST's in musescore 4! So you don't even need a DAW anymore >:D
Song name?
Just my own composition for a short film competition.
Nice, but not really that good. I'm glad that MuseScore has improved those sounds, but those strings do not really sound like concert strings.
I am curious as to how solo strings sound. My guess is not all that good.
Will MuseScore 4 sounds just as good without Noteperformer3?
This is without noteperformer! I don't think noteperformer works with musescore 4. But vsts do.
@@mccoydtromb I had heard that They've made MuseScore compatible with Noteperformer3. I use it in Sibelius, but have not tried it in MuseScore.
But what is terrible about M4 currently, which so many months after its release still hasn't been fixed, is that it crashes each time and corrupts files - even to the degree of absolute no-restore state. That is just outrageous.
I haven't had major problems with this, but I have also made backups of my scores so that I don't lose anything. Could be the platform you're on?
@@mccoydtromb I don't think so because I never had such troubles with MS3
I meant the platform has some kind of problem with MuseScore 4. I know for a while Mac users were having problems, and I know the crash bugs do keep cropping up on various systems. I had one the other day where one laptop in my class of 4 kept crashing whenever I plugged one of the MIDI keyboards in. Just that one!
is this score public? if yes pls send the name/username
It's not public, but I'll happily send it to you.
@@mccoydtromb that would be awesome, thx
What about drums argh
That's still one of the things I'd like to see too. Still to come, hopefully.
Museacore 3 made the piece sound like you reconstructed Kerbal Space Program from memory whereas Museacore 4 sounds like an actual piece of music
A great analogy! :)
David, my playback in Musescore 4 has static, how is it you had no static-Help
Try going to edit, preferences, IO, change the buffer to a higher number
@@mccoydtromb I had the same exact problem and this fixed it, thanks a lot David!
Ah too bad I don't have Windows 10 so I can't download MuseScore 4 ! The sounds are really great and more realistic, smooth.
You could consider moving your machine to Linux. Or bite the bullet and upgrade to Win 10...
@@mccoydtromb yeah but last time I went on win 10, I had a critical bug, and I don't want to lose I did or have on win 8
The new brass sucks though. They made it SOOO quiet, when by nature it should overpower woodwinds when playing the same dynamic.
Nah. You should have done v1 vs v4. :D
Wow, there's an idea!
@@mccoydtromb I still remember the many benefits from v1 to v2 and v2 to v3. :D
M4 is more spacious, and M3 is flatter.
I think it's that nice reverb in the MuseSounds samples.
@@mccoydtromb I wonder, however, if the reverb is planned to be made controllable in the future. In MS3 there was, at least, an attempt done in that direction.
I believe that is the eventual goal, yes.
4 is much better than 3
it's just to bad they messed up the notepad and tab function so it's pretty much useless
I hope you've found the workaround to get your notepad back. I'm so relieved to have it working again. And it's a pretty easy workaround. Do you mean guitar tabs, or tab on the computer keyboard?
@@mccoydtromb I mean guitar tabs. It's just not working right. I'm sticking to musescore 3
MS3 flute trill sounded so nasty and awful it's hilarious. And that's coming from a former flute player.🤣
Oh Lord that was the most annoying thing in musescore 3
In my experience with muse sounds, jazz does not sound good at all. The trumpets have a limited range, and accent tenuto markings are played incorrectly, but i love almost all the other sounds on other compositions.
Yes, jazz isn't working so well yet. But give the people at muse some time and I think we'll see it improve.
edited😁
It's a pity you had this experience, but I suspect you have given up on MU4 too early. There may be some teething problems, but most can be solved by changing some settings. I'm also surprised you opened all of your scores and saved them if you were having so many problems. Luckily there is a way to take them back to MU3 if you need to - MusicXML.
@@mccoydtromb yeah, you are right.. i got histerycal jjajaja I thougth I lost what I was writting over 3 month, but I reintalled and I fixed the issue of the score playing at half speed and the cracking sound by fixing my audio interfaz to lower bit depth. Still cant play well articulations, sometimes it does it just fine and other totally wrong but, it´s ok, im gonna wait im sure gradually those things will be fixed
Glad you were able to get it sorted out. I know new software can be frustrating to use!
@@mccoydtromb yeah, I confess im slow learnig software stuff..Hey thank for your help by the way! really apreciate it.
