Inside the Studio with Audiobook Narrator Johanna Parker

- Behind the scenes look at an audiobook narrator's daily grind. Colum McCann's Let the Great World Spin was an honor to narrate and I attempt here to recreate the methodical obsession that reading a good book can bring out in me. Then there are the croissants I'm not allowed to totrure my instrument with and the sound engineer's POV as well. I promise to record myself narrating the next Sookie Stackhouse (not before its release date!) though I can't promise to wear short shorts and a Merlotte's T-shirt. It gets cooold in that booth.

Honestly I love her narrating. I choose books solely because they are read by her. She is so good!!!
I love this narrator! You brought the Sookie Stackhouse series to life for me!!! I prefer the audios to the actual book because of your voice. Thank you!! :) I'm shocked her natural voice doesn't have a southern drawl, ha.... so talented!!
I whole-heartedly agree!!!!
There IS a fear of love...there is...a fear...of croissant
Your Sookie Stackhouse is excellent. The nuances of your audio performances are charming. Thank you.
Mrs. Parker.. Your the best!
I'm a full time teacher at a daycare and a full time college student.
needless to say I'm always terribly busy.
I have the audio books of the Sookie Novels.. It's the only way I ever have time these days to keep up with my favorite authors..
Your voice is truly a delight.
Also I'd like to add that I'm a southern girl myself and you do a wonderful southern accent for Sookie! i love it!
thank you so much!
Yay this is such a delight to see. I love to read paper books, but I always buy the audiobooks for sookie stackhouse because you're voice is now the voice of sookie stackhouse in my head. It's so calm and smooth and I love the guy's voices you do. I love Alexander Skarsgard, but your voice for eric is so much better than the actors. So cool. Can't wait to see you do the recorded after the audiobook comes out (which I am definitely buying on May 3rd! So excited)
This is amazing, thank you so much for sharing! I own a great many of your audiobooks from Meg Cabot books, to the Sookie Stackhouse series, and Marcia Evanick just to name a few! I love your voice, your a wonderful narrator who truly immerses me in the story, I really admire you, Definitely one of my all time favorite narrators!
People think that narration is easy (which is how professionals like Johanna make it look), but it's arduous work. I've done long training videos that were surprisingly tiring, and they don't even need the artistry that a novel needs. (Inflection, timing and pacing is everything.) Great to watch you work, Johanna.
Thanks! Perceptive and wise feedback. I went to your page and fell in love with Vincent! Give him a lovepat for me! ~J
Aw, thanks! Norton - his brother - just sidled up next to me on the couch. Vincent is being coy and lying in the middle of the floor, looking handsome.
You are so awesome Johanna you made it so easy for me to listen to sookie stackhouse and it brought the whole series to life for me. i dont want anyone else to read sookie to me, your my one true
This was really beautiful. Seems like very fun productive and rewarding people to work with..lol
Hi Johanna, I hope you enjoy your new scene, was an honour to meet you , I will check out some of your audio book work.
I wondered who was reading sookie to me. She seems pretty awesome.
Thanks a lot +Johanna for sharing your experience!
Wow! Love this! Amazing voice! I’ve just recently started doing audiobook narration, and I’m absolutely loving the process, but it is a marathon and I’m going through all the same stuff. Mouth clicks, flubbing the script, etc….. also, I have to play engineer too!
This is so amazing. ❤
First of all, you are such a wonderful story teller. I really love listening to you, especially when I'm headed to sleep. Back when I was half way from finishing the 10 Sookie books, there were nights where I just stay up and listen to you :) Until now I still listen to your audio books again and again, I can't sleep without listening to you.
Now that I got that off my chest, can you update us about the Sookie series? When are the other books coming out?
NIce job! Beautiful voice!
Did you know a big part of the success of an audiobook is how well the narrator's voice tells the story? Find out what producers consider when searching for a suitable voice: voice123.com/blog/voice123/the-right-voice-for-audiobook-narration/?UA-cam&Blog%20clicks&The%20right%20voice
I liked all of your "There is a fear of love." I think you can speak no wrong. 💁😊
Truly interesting to watch you in action. The audiobook process seems much more difficult acting as you must convey so much with your voice - all without any video visual aides. I've been listening to audiobooks for years, and consider your up there with the best. I particularly enjoy the Sookie Stackhouse series - tremendous range with a very authentic southern accident, especially for a Yankee! :-)
Most helpful - thank you.
This was so interesting! Your a great narrator to, I loved to listen to the sookie stackhouse series :)
It says in the description you'll record yourself narrating the next book, what happened to that?? Really want to see that!
I think she does an amazing job as Sookie, it's the only book series I've both read and listened to the audiobook version. I think she brings life to the characters and has a very emotive voice. What did you think?
Fantastic video. Love your work. Please make more videos sometime.
thank you very much.
"Eh, that was kinda good." LOL
And I've watched this clip too, but didn't comment on it til now.
When do we get to watch Johanna reading Sookie & team? Would love to see that. Amazing gift for giving each character it's own distinct personality from a an audio perspective. Perhaps documentary material?
I'd really like to hear some more recordings of her voice, does anyone know where can I find more samples?

👍Nice
I'm about to check out the audio of Living Dead in Dallas I just wanted to hear if her voice would bother me or not. Any feedback from a listener?
Wow, it's like watching a time capsule. Was this really done in 2010? Because all the home studio equipment from 2010 that you could get are well more advanced than the equipment shown here.
These studios that you actually have to commute to are like a relic now (you, however, are not a relic, Johanna!)
Enjoyed your reads. Is that a U87 Mic?
Mrs. Parker,
Maybe you know, is it true there will be 3 more books after the last one that just came out this past year?
Well, did they come out? lol.
She seems incredibly sweet
Interesting that the engineer also has an esthetic input. I would call her then a "director" as well. Some audiobooks let slip terrible mispronunciations or misreading. I once heard "moot point" read as "mute point". How does that stuff happen?
People are human, bro
