Paul Rodgers really doing an impressive job here of taking up the slack after Kossoff went missing. He admirably carries the vocals and the guitar parts here. Respect! I notice some complaining about Bad Company in the thread. Consider that bands of that era who were clearly in the first rank talent wise routinely went many years making zero money. Some faded away; some discovered a new formula; some found niche work at state-fairs or something; and a few repackaged themselves in a more commercial fashion. I try never to hold it against them. And listen to that lovely Hammond organ wooohoooooo !
Absolutely fantastic band. Much better than Bad Company, which always sounded like rock-by-numbers. 'Heartbreaker' wasn't the classic Free line-up but to me it was a fantastic album. That and 'Fire and Water' brimmed with great songs, great musicianship and great singing. And a special mention of Rabbit (Robert Bundrick) on this album, I especially love 'Common Mortal man', great, great song.
So true, my favourite all time band from a 16 year old to almost 70 now. These songs still make the hair on the back of my neck stand up. Seven Angels one of my very favourite album tracks of all time ❤👍.
RIP Andy Fraser. After some mild Googling to access more images of Free, I just read he died on Monday. A soulful player, as are/were all members of this outstanding band.
@@eliades1973 Indeed. It is Yamaguchi IIRC. Also Kos in M.I.A. They brought in ''Rabbit'' on keyboards and Rodgers took over on guitar. This pales in comparison to the KOS versions. Yet it is still great BECAUSE of Rogers' transcendent vocals.

Just wow! A largely unknown piece by a inexcusably overlooked band, done live and with video! The experience of watching this affirms the great contribution of the UA-cam forum to my life. The great time of ''back in the day'' may be only memories for me- but it is an upload like this that ''takes me home''. Thank you to all who make it possible. Kossof and Rodgers - 'nuff said! For my money, this side of Elvis, Paul Rodgers is the greatest hard rock singer in the pantheon. P.S. Fuck the so called Rock n Roll ''Hall of Fame'' for ignoring Free and all of Paul Rodgers subsequent, stellar, achievements. Any book, documentary, or organization that purports to be about the Age of Rock, and then ignores Bad Company, could NOT have been there in the 70's and is not fit to represent Rock n Roll.
I think Paul Rodgers is handsome. He has the wild, look of the 70s that has been lost to time and modern vanity. What a voice too, sends shivers through me.
spookypatchouli: I think the same, in spite of his one eyebrow over his face he was a very good looking man with a fantastic singing voice. And his moves were elegant, sensitive. A cultivated character.
This was (when i was younger, but also today) one of my favorite bands and this song? Greeeaaaaaat!!!!!!! What a drive! (and i remember the smoke, not on the water) Where are such bands today?
On the seventh day he created Free. I think it's a bloody shame that Free aren't more recognized. I mean look at the line-up for gods sakes. Fraser, Koss, Kirke and Rodgers. All one of a kind...
Neither Fraser nor Kos were in Free at this point. Go check out the studio version (from Heartbreaker) and the alt. studio version available on YT. They are masterpieces to which this does not compare.
Stirring, anthemic and ...raw...they did it like...few. Tetsu Yamauchi on Bass...with Simon Kirk on Drums...that's one helluva 'engine room'...Hammond...pure class, Kossof...stalking like a wolf, wondrously weaving his guitar and Paul's vocals...well IMHO insufficient words exist but...blisteringly beautiful will suffice for now. Truly fond memories...I'd like this played at my funeral...I listen to this in the car...full tilt...and I'm almost 70...somethings, ya never grow out of. Many thanx for this clip. Ginja Ninja
I don't think Kos was in Free at this point (he was M.I.A., sadly). Are you seeing something I am not? Otherwise, I agree with you, but, my ears and eyes say ''No Kos''. This is why the ''Heartbreaker'' (LP) studio sessions are SO important. Kos came back (and I'm pretty sure, Fraser did as well). There is even an ''alternate'' studio version of Seven Angels. Both are masterpieces- and freed Rodgers up to simply TEAR loose on the vocals (without having to carry the guitar-as he is doing here). IMO, Paul Rodgers is the greatest Hard Rock singer this side of Elvis Presley. Check out the Heartbreaker ''Seven Angels'' versions- you won't regret it (both are on YT). Sounds like we are about the same age. No regrets- we had the best of it, no doubt. I never got to see Free. But Bad Co. burnt our city down several times. Free's influence on Skynyrd is unmistakable and considering the huge difference in line up and dynamics and lyrical ''ethos'', not to mention that Ronnie had an entirely different set of pipes, this speaks volumes about Van Zandt's unerring ''ear'' and the all pervasive influence Free had on their contemporaries (far beyond anything measurable by record sales or a ''place'' in some Rock history book. Kos had a vibrato that even Clapton (publicly) raved about! Fraser was like, what,-all of 17?! After I heard them, I LUSTED for an Orange amp head.
You never hear any comments about Paul singing and playing guitar and playing the piano and the harmonica sometimes! Paul Rodgers is a living miracle!❤❤❤
This is AWESOME! Never knew Paul Rodgers was that fine of a guitar player. Everyone saying this isn't Free because there's no Kossoff or Fraser. But in MY OPINION this lineup was just as good. If you've never listened to the Heartbreaker album, you're MISSING OUT! Lots of great songs and it's definitely overlooked by MANY.
I saw PR live when he was guitarist and singer in the three piece band Peace. He held his own with the guitar with little backup while also singing. At least Jimi Hendrix had a brilliant drummer, and Paul can be forgiven for not quite matching Jimi.
Very interesting to read about the special cirkomstances surrounding Free's trip to Japan in 72 in David Claytons book Heavy Load. Free is pure legend.
Holy crap!! Where did you get all these FREE videos. This is one of my favorite FREE songs. Why don't they release all this stuff on DVD for us FREE fans?!
So nice.....Paul playing rhythm guitar.......The man is a true Legend .....WHY THE HELL ISN'T FREE , BAD CO. OR PAUL RODGERS IN THE ROCK AND ROLL HALL OF FAME ?.....So many great band aren't in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and should .....And there are bands that have no damn business being in the Hall already.......GREEN "FRICKIN" DAY ?......Seriously ?.....
Feel the same way! If I was in charge of the Rock n' Roll Hall of Fame, I would take several acts out of it. Little Feat and Paul Rodgers would definitely be in.
Incredible, rare footage, it rocks hard and brutal - can anyone tell me where this was exactly? Somewhere in Japan? Brilliant as it is, this is the moribund Free, they're definitely on their last gasps here, which is what makes it that much more enigmatic. There's no Kossoff any more, a man moribund himself, Fraser long gone and Rodgers now takes up the guitar duties. "Heartbreaker", superb album though it was, made by all these guys on this stage, wasn't really a Free album, it was both chronogically and in spirit the transition of Free to Bad Co, it's in a no man's land and has an oddness on account, and all the better for it. There's something wonderfully eerie about this film, a fearful sensation of things coming to an end permeates it; the band is dying, the day is dying and it's a song about dying. It is uniquely strange and haunting.
Utter bull! The album was a huge hit as was the single wishing well! The song is about being set free and on being happy to be. Only kossoff stopped the band from continuing, the album is pure class and should have been a turning point in a different musical direction for Free. Bad company were a pale version to Free, not the other way round. Your write up is more suited to an indie film production not a rock groups performance.
A great track, even with Paul Kossoff and Andy Fraser missing from the classic line up. Tetsu Yamauchi does a great job on bass (giving Free a Bad Company sound before BC was 'born'?) and keyboard player John 'Rabbit' Brundrick is excellent too...
I'm impressed by how Paul can play guitar while exercising his peerless pipes. Didn't he do the solo on "Wishing Well"? His Neanderthal monobrow is similarly impressive, ahead of it's time, and perhaps of a browular hirstuteness unmatched in the field of rock music until the days of the Gallagher brothers.
John 'Rabbit' Bundrick. He made a big contribution to Free's final album 'Heartbreaker'. His Hammond organ interplay with Paul Kossoff's weeping guitar on songs like 'Come Together in the Morning' are stunning. Before that he made an album with Kossoff, drummer Simon Kirke and bassist Tetsu (Kossoff, Kirke, Testu and Rabbit) when Free broke up the first time. He also played with Kossoff on his solo album 'Back Street Crawler' and on the second album by the band with the same name ('Blue Soul' and 'Leaves in the Wind' being standout tracks). Rabbit made a couple of solo albums in the 1970s ('Broken Arrows' and 'Dark Saloon'), played as as session musician with many artists (including Sandy Denny) and then toured with The Who for several years. He once said: "Free were the best band that I ever played in, bar none, so that includes The Who".
The album was released in 1973, but recorded earlier. 'Seven Angels' was actually a song Paul Rodgers wrote in 1971 for a short-lived band called Peace, when Free broke up for the first time. Peace recorded a version of it in 1971 for a radio session (it is on UA-cam).

His Hammond organ interplay with Paul Kossoff's weeping guitar on songs like 'Come Together in the Morning' are stunning.
