"Endless Ale," on Modern History's channel he read an account of an Italian traveller who judged the British Ales as "smelling like horse piss, with husks floating ontop."

On the topic of foot binding: There is a wonderful Chinese story in the book Flowers in the Mirror by Li Ruzhen about the group of male adventurers visiting a country populated by women. The book was written in 1827, for western context that's about 50 years after the French revolution. At the time, foot binding was still practiced but I believe was beginning it's slow decline. In the story, the nation of women force men into the social role of women and have them perform gender in the way that women were expected to. This leads to an extremely striking depiction of one of the main male characters being at once disfigured and emasculated through having his feet bound, as well as making a very interesting proto-feminist point about the treatment of women in a male-dominated society. I would highly recommend giving it a read.

The modern pharmacist is a strange occupation. You go to college for 6 years and it's def not the easiest major. You have to take Calc, organic chem, and other difficult classes to earn that Pharm.D. Then you graduate, go to work at CVS and basically get paid to just be there while underlings count out pills into bottles. It has to be the easiest 6 figure job out there.

25:03 "One reason for Columbus' 1492 voyage to the Americas was to dismiss the Flat Earth Theory."
Really? I thought this was just a persistent myth. Even now, with some Googling, the first several results seem to agree that there was a consensus that the Earth was round in 1492 Europe.
I am surprised to hear this on this channel. I trust your opinion. If you have a reason to believe otherwise, would you be willing to follow up on this?
Edit: Nevermind, MedievalMadness says the opposite at 1:00:42. Did I misinterpret the way the first entry was phrased? They sound to be in contradiction with one another.

    • @left4twenty
      @left4twenty 2 роки тому +4

Given the framing of the first comment, it was just meant as a slam on flat earthers stupidity.
They do believe that about columbus, which if its looked into for a single second, it becomes obvious that even in columbus' time, the hypothesis of a flat disc was bunk

⁉️ I don't know if you've ever covered this, but I've always wondered if after the plague, did survivors get to take and keep the belongings of those who had died? Did contents of a home go to surviving family members or did Kings & Nobility get everything?
I'm particularly curious what happened to businesses, homes & land.
I suppose land was already in the hands of Nobles or the Church? But, how did that all work? Were people allowed to make wills in medieval Europe & were they honored ⁉️
Also, did the plague spread to the Far East? I don't think I've ever heard stories about this. What was it like there in Medieval times? Do you ever cover this? Got my answer...@ 35:17 & 36:19 (joy the plague part but I'm guessing it's around)

I really appreciate the fact you called out the later denunciation of the Medieval church as having "suppressed science" as a myth. In fact, the Medieval church was the principal patron of scientific research and discovery at the time. The main reason the church suppressed Galileo's publications was because he published what amounted to a scientific paper without having gone through the scientific community (i.e. the church) for peer review or confirmation of his findings. The church would indeed go on to support the Heliocentric model of the solar system once more research had been done. Galileo was smart but also stubborn and bit of a jerk.
I also appreciated the fact you pointed out that the Medieval church did not believe in physical witchcraft - that is that "magic" was real. The believed that witches, mediums, and so forth were hucksters and tricksters who create "counterfeit miracles" to dupe people and take their money while also leading them astray into falsehoods - just like they do today!

The astonishing thing about astrology is how many “old timers” in the American south still hang on to these beliefs.
My father who lived his entire life in the Appalachian mountains, was a practicing southern Baptist, and by all accounts was a “good ol’ boy” or a “redneck” wouldn’t do anything without consulting “the signs”.
Planting, hunting, fishing, even digging a hole (if you dug the hole in the wrong sign, you wouldn’t have enough dirt to fill it back in).
He would say things like “we have to plant taters before next Tuesday, cause Mercury is in the bowels” or whatever.
I grew up with that my whole life, but never learned it. He had a calendar of all the signs that he consulted for everything.

So, they used "little people" to hold onto, so they could flaunt around in 30 inch platform heels... 👠 Hahahahaha 🤣 I'm dead.
This compilation is fascinating and sort of hilarious 😆

I've seen your videos one by one, but this! Got my attention to see it all! 🌹🌛🌜I have heard the St. Vitus dance was actually a rebellion against cruel authority at the time. We may never know. I enjoyed every minute, thank you!🎊💮🌼🌻🏵️🌸🌺❤️🌚🌝🌹

11:27 I imagine this law was probably relating to looting that occurred. Many peasants and poor people surely looted from abandoned houses of merchants and nobles who got afflicted by the plague. It probably cause conflict with people disliking people stealing from the dead.

Skin whitening is still a thing today in some countries and even surreptitiously with black celebrities, some of whom allegedly whiten their skin for some reason. Skin whitening is apparently a thing in the Philippines too for similar reasons as you’ve outlined. 🤷‍♂️
