"Endless Ale," on Modern History's channel he read an account of an Italian traveller who judged the British Ales as "smelling like horse piss, with husks floating ontop."
Bro your whole channel is beyond underrated. You got me cracking up about dancing skeletons while your talking about how most people seen decomposing bodies in the medieval times. You funny and educational man this is what I needed in school
I studied Medieval Lit & History all the way through undergrad & grad school. Although I know quite a lot of what you’re discussing, I like to share these videos with my mother. WELL DONE!!!!
I really enjoy looking at the paintings and illustrations from the past, and this video is crammed full of them. Thankyou for them as well as the knowledge..
I listen to this almost every night now because of your voice and the way u tell the stories. I used to listen to guided meditations every night for years to help me fall asleep but this is way more interesting to fall asleep to. There's No loud noises or weird sounds that make me wake up.
On the topic of foot binding: There is a wonderful Chinese story in the book Flowers in the Mirror by Li Ruzhen about the group of male adventurers visiting a country populated by women. The book was written in 1827, for western context that's about 50 years after the French revolution. At the time, foot binding was still practiced but I believe was beginning it's slow decline. In the story, the nation of women force men into the social role of women and have them perform gender in the way that women were expected to. This leads to an extremely striking depiction of one of the main male characters being at once disfigured and emasculated through having his feet bound, as well as making a very interesting proto-feminist point about the treatment of women in a male-dominated society. I would highly recommend giving it a read. Love the channel, commenting for the algorithm. Keep it going ! xoxo
The modern pharmacist is a strange occupation. You go to college for 6 years and it's def not the easiest major. You have to take Calc, organic chem, and other difficult classes to earn that Pharm.D. Then you graduate, go to work at CVS and basically get paid to just be there while underlings count out pills into bottles. It has to be the easiest 6 figure job out there.
You gotta love how the nobles feared God so much that they treated everyone under them like absolute crap. All while religious hypocrisy is one of the worst sins a person can commit.
What you dont seem to be aware of is that Edward III banned all forms of sport so that young men would spend Sundays practicing archery, a skill deemed necessary to the realm. And he was right, Englands archers nearly wiped out most of Frances nobility in the hundred years war under him, mainly due to their archery skills.
25:03 "One reason for Columbus' 1492 voyage to the Americas was to dismiss the Flat Earth Theory." Really? I thought this was just a persistent myth. Even now, with some Googling, the first several results seem to agree that there was a consensus that the Earth was round in 1492 Europe. I am surprised to hear this on this channel. I trust your opinion. If you have a reason to believe otherwise, would you be willing to follow up on this? Edit: Nevermind, MedievalMadness says the opposite at 1:00:42. Did I misinterpret the way the first entry was phrased? They sound to be in contradiction with one another.
Given the framing of the first comment, it was just meant as a slam on flat earthers stupidity. They do believe that about columbus, which if its looked into for a single second, it becomes obvious that even in columbus' time, the hypothesis of a flat disc was bunk
I remember reading that the whole prove-the-earth-is-round story was made up by a Columbus biographer. One theory is that Columbus thought the earth was smaller than it really is because he interpreted historical measurements from Antiquity wrong.

I really appreciate the fact you called out the later denunciation of the Medieval church as having "suppressed science" as a myth. In fact, the Medieval church was the principal patron of scientific research and discovery at the time. The main reason the church suppressed Galileo's publications was because he published what amounted to a scientific paper without having gone through the scientific community (i.e. the church) for peer review or confirmation of his findings. The church would indeed go on to support the Heliocentric model of the solar system once more research had been done. Galileo was smart but also stubborn and bit of a jerk. I also appreciated the fact you pointed out that the Medieval church did not believe in physical witchcraft - that is that "magic" was real. The believed that witches, mediums, and so forth were hucksters and tricksters who create "counterfeit miracles" to dupe people and take their money while also leading them astray into falsehoods - just like they do today!
