Because their base damage is very low, due to being unupgraded, fire affinity is a good way to increase the damage dealt. Fire scorpion talisman, flaming strike and the way critical damage is calculated also help with that

Not a dumb question. It is referring to auxiliary effects, basically poison, rot, frost and bleed.
