I'm a Physical Education teacher and at some point during the school year I teach my classes about poison ivy. We identify it and discuss what to do when around it. I also point out the other plants in the area that have leaves of three and show them the differences between them. Most of the others have thorns and the leaves are different.
I'm going to use the berries of white and the hair rhymes when I take the kids out in the fall.

I was never allergic to poison ivy growing up. I thought I would cut back my zebra grass seeing it's winter in New England. There happened to be a woody vine with brown hairyness around it. I was breaking it with my bare hands. So I've had poison ivy rash for the last week. It's the worst, never again! I wish I saw this a week ago!

Fun fact? People that “are allergic” to poison ivy don’t actually get it. It’s the ones not allergic that have the reaction. I can roll around in it and it doesn’t bother me a bit.

I doubt most people would leave the vine on wood cut for burning in fireplace or wood stove, but point taken.👍
I had an elderly friend who inhaled smoke when a neighbor burned poison ivy. Like others here, she had to be hospitalized. Fortunately, she pulled through, but it was a close one.
Hate the stuff so bad that I would spray any I can find, anywhere. I've tried digging it up. Have learned it is always attached to a long, bare looking single root that runs to another growth. I believe they have an 'epicenter' underground like a rhizome. It stores the nutrients this evil plant needs to thrive. You can apply weed killer / brush killer, and the things seem impervious. Much more difficult to kill than people understand. It is because they have some many connections. One section dies, and the other is not effected. And I can tell you this: if you see one grouping of the plant, then somewhere within a short radius you are going to find more. The roots branch out underneath the ground like the spokes of a wheel, then popping up, spreading out in visible leaf stalk sections. The young ones 'droop.' Their noxious leaves waiting to ruin someone's month (not day - this stuff once entering your skin will be there for about a month creating devastation). If I think I have been in contact then I use automotive degreaser GoJo and apply it on me wherever possible contact, and rinse well with COLD water. If not, you'll find out the oil has remained and is destroying your skin cells. Do not use degreaser with pumice or abrasive. Only smooth. You don't want to open skin cells to invite the poison oils inside. Wash it off with a degreaser and you're ok.

Actually, something abrasive is exactly right for helping to get this junk off the skin. I recommend Tecnu.
a good washcloth with whatever you use, I use castile soap, but wiping the oil off the skin is more important than the cleaner you use. even if all you have is water, use water but use something to wipe the oil away from your body.

My mom inhaled poison ivy smoke when she was little and had to be hospitalized. She pulled through and is now 95 years old.
Happened to my sister when we were camping. We didn’t even have a fire going, but she inhaled smoke from someone else’s fire and had to be hospitalized. Her throat started closing up and she couldn’t breathe!

@@moseknowsnature thank you, yes she’s fine now although ever since that incident many years ago she has been very susceptible to respiratory ailments. It’s good of you to warn people of the serious potential danger, I never even gave it a thought until it happened to my sis.
Happened to me when I was about 2 years old. Dear old Dad was clearing a woodlot by burning. Needless to say, I breathed some smoke and wound up in hospital for 2 weeks I'm told (of course I don't remember it!). I'm in my 70s now. Funny though, as a kid I was EXTREMELY allergic to P.I. but now, not so much. Now I only get a very mild irritation that only lasts a day or two. Weird!

Good advice, but keep in mind that mature Winter Creeper will also have hairy vines as well. The hairs are fine just like Poison Ivy. Virginia Creeper will have hairy vines too but the hairs are very coarse.

My Dad was clearing a lot behind his new house in the late 50s and inhaled poison ivy smoke. He almost died. Very nasty stuff!

I have it growing all over my place. I spend most of my time in flipflops and haven’t been bothered by it yet. It consists of new plants 4” tall all the way up to vines running up to the top of my oaks. My question is, if I cut that vine at the bottom of the tree, will the vine from there up die? Or, will that vine continue living off of my tree? The point being I don’t want it killing my trees.

Poison Ivy isn't dangerous on its own. It's how your bodies immune system responds. People with strong immune systems generally get the rashes. Just spray them. You immune system will eventually catch on and you will get it bad.
Three LEAFLETS let it be. Learning the diff between a leaf and leaflet is important. I have never found poison ivy deep in isolated woods. It usually grows where man has been. Farms, golf courses, edges of hiking paths, etc...

I remember when i was 12 years old I was helping my sister get leaves for a leaf collection for school. I went to get a Holly tree leaf. I grabbed a poison oak leaf that was growing from a vine on the tree. I got a big blister on my finger from that and learned what a poison oak leaf was after that.
You arre so right about this. Do not EVER burn the vines. That is how I got the worst case ever of poison. Also avoid poison sumac!

Love my poison ivy! Everywhere on my farm in Michigan. I am not allergic and enjoy it, but I make sure folks visiting the farm stay away from it. I remove it near the house but elsewhere it benefits wildlife. Know all about the smoke, the hairy vines and of course the leaves and berries. The adages you quote are good to know for those who are allergic and I've been quoting them to visitors for fifty years.
Birds love the white fruit. Over 50 species of birds eat and when the leaves turn bright red in the fall deer eat them up. My dad would break out if he talked to someone on the phone who was looking at a picture of poison ivy. Doesn't affect me much at all.

The rash can be treated by oral corticosteroids eg prednisone or injectable eg depomedrol but better to avoid it . your dog can carry the sap on it's coat .the smoke from burning Ivy will cause a fine red rash that resembles sunburn on exposed skin.

I use Fels Naptha soap and COLD water to thoroughly wash the effected skin area. Stops itching immediately and prevents it from spreading. Have done this several times with great results and no side effects.

Great informative video! I do have some years old downed trees with a 3/4" diameter root running along the length. It might be a dead vine - I don't know. It's been down for 5 + years. If I wear protective clothing and remove the root, can I cut up the tree and use it in my wood stove?
All the oils are dried out of it by now. I think. :)

@@horacesawyer2487 I had no problems... I did use a pilers and pull off all of the vines before burning... Also, used gloves when handling the firewood after the vines were removed...

I’ve got an oak tree that was cut down a couple days ago. Fat hairy vine going up the side. I can’t recall if I’ve ever seen it with leaves, but I’ll assume it’s poison.
Can the vine be pulled off (carefully) and bark removed to render the wood safe for burning in a wood stove?
Do not remove and burn under any circumstances!!!

Yes. Be careful to get all of the vine and bark off. In a wood stove I would think handling it would be the biggest issue.

Berries white, run in fright. Love that! Whew, have had many a swollen and including eyes closed experiences with the three of not always leaves of three let it be. Though the white berries seems like poison sumac somewhat. Poison Oak, Poison Sumac (red in the head, wont end up dead) and Poison Ivy. On another note, reminds me I might have found a record Sumac tree. I need to confirm, though seems like 40ft tall though may have stretched due to kudzu or I may have misidentified since was driving by. Not sure what would have red ends like that though or something was playing with me with the light. Thanks for sharing!
Your red top plants may be staghorn sumac or smooth sumac. Both make a lovely pink lemonade that is very high in vitamin c. Good luck and may Jesus bless you beyond your wildest dreams.

I learned not to cut that with a chainsaw the hard way..... cut it with something else or the top of the blade. Keep it from spraying your forearm.
I have a pole saw for that problem. Yes use the top of the bar. Throw the chips away from you.

I’m not ashamed but overwhelmingly proud to share the many gifts of our creator. How can anyone look at the most common wildflower or creature and not be awe struck of how perfect that creation thrives and interacts with the entire world. The greatest gift offered was Gods son Jesus who willingly suffered and died and became the perfect sacrifice for the sins of man. For us to have everlasting life we must only ask for the forgiveness of our sins, and acknowledge that Jesus died and arose from death and is alive today in the hearts of the believers. A simple plan for God to have his children with him forever in heaven, but a perfect plan!

I always spray it with round up. It takes a few months. But the round up will traverse the vine up and down to the roots. My yeard is now clear.

throw some thick baby wipes in a strong ziplock bag.pour in some 70 or 90% alcohol.you can keep in your pocket. If you rub on poison ivy, grab a wipe and rub away from the body. It's important to wipe the oil off with wipe (or washcloth of you are home). just pouring something on it does not remove all the oil and might spread it if it didn't dissolve the oil.
Check out my video of about a month ago on poison ivy I d look alike and natural cure. The natural cure is touch me not also known as jewel weed. @@moseknowsnature I always used jewelweed.it really worked.I live in Paterson, NJ by the great falls.Most of the city is poop, but my area has the waterfalls, tons of untouched woods,streams, river. For some stupid reason, the idiot city decided to drain all the streams. I have been sick since that year, traumatized seeing all the fish, turtles dying without water. I saved as many as I could, filled up buckets and put them in the river.The massive amount of jewelweed that grew along the streams dried up and died no longer having access to most soil. The arrow arums that grew in the stream died. everything died so now I use alcohol wipes.I have found such a variety of medicine plants in these woods. heal all, tansy, yellow and curly dock, mints, comfrey, chamomile, and about 100 more. It's disgusting how little by little the cities encroach more and more into natural areas, destroy all in their path, just to make a profit.

A better thing to remember is that poison ivy is an "alternate" branch plant. Many plants have 3 leaves but are "opposite" branch plants.

I have some 3 leaf vines growing on some trees, I wouldn’t call them “hairy” but they have short root like things, which grab the bark of the tree as they climb. Look more like legs of a centipede. So, could hairy mean these, which are relatively large compared to the hair that grew on my head years ago? Google pictures has given me several different results for the same vines, some say poison ivy, some say poison oak, and several other species that are not poisonous. Also, I’ve never had a poison ivy or poison oak reaction, maybe never touched it, or maybe I’m immune. There are 3 leaf vines that aren’t poisonous, and recent reading and videos have pointed out that there are many varieties that look very different. In the mountain/farm area of upper NY state, I was always told that poison ivy has shiny leaves, especially in the north, so what is the best way to identify it?
Will not be poison oak. Not in your area. Sounds like poison ivy to me with the hair and shiny leaves. In fall poison ivy will get small white fruit. Hope this helps! God bless you and your family.

Can the Jerusalem artichoke be grown in pots?

@@moseknowsnature I am very concerned because poison ivy turns me into a lunatic. It is just crazy what it does to me. Thanks for the answer, but that was kind of two questions. I guess I should also clarify. There is two kinds of safe here, safe to touch and safe to burn.
I now understand the dangers of the vine itself, thank you. For hypothetical reasons, let's assume the tree with the vine removed is used for some purpose. Some of the 'hair' will remain on the tree bark.
How long would you guess it would take the chemical in the remaining 'hair' to remain active?
I realize it depends on a lot of factors but assuming all of the vine is removed and only maybe 50% of the small hairs remain in normal conditions (not desert, tropic, arctic, etc), what would be your best guess as to the time before the tree can be touched (the bark where the vine was with possible hairs remanding) ) and secondly burned (without the vine!) safely?
Hypothetically because I have several trees that the vines have been stripped off of and would want to know if these are still dangerous for handling for wood use (sawlogs) or firewood.

Virginia creeper has hairy bark and isn't toxic to touch
Myself and children have a reaction to creeper like poison ivy
I get slight rashes from that and wisteria. Please people, do not plant wisteria unless away from all other plants and trees and only if you are going to maintain it, keep it in control. It will choke kill everything and you'll never rid if it.
Dawn dishwashing detergent breaks up the oil on your skin and stops it... You're welcome... 🙂

Just wash whatever skin touched it within a half hour with water and naphtha washing soap. Treat it like a a caustic oil.

i think i got lucky, i cut a thick hairy vine like this off my mulberry tree. it was a out as thick as a grapefruit, i didnt know it was poison ivy i used a sawzall to cut the entire vine off the tree
Well you may have been lucky, but chances are you were not sensitive to poison ivy at that time. About 50 percent of people don’t react when exposed. Good luck and may God bless you and your family .

My friend had to burn a bunch of trees on his property and he did that and me and my other friend had to save his butt.

The only people who aren't sensitive to poison ivy or oak are the ones who have never encountered it. 🤣

As a kid I was the only kid on the street that never got it while everyone else did. I'm 63 now and still have never had it and my back yard was covered in it when I moved in. I thinned out the trees for more of a park like setting rather then the dense forest it was and most of it died off on it's own. I only found out it was here when my son got it bad after I had been walking in it for 2 years with shorts and Crocs without socks. I still just grab the vine and pull it off the tree with bare hands and given that have burned every pile of brush I ever cleared it's a certainty that I have inhaled it.
I'm not allergic to urushiol.

Yet. You can gain and lose your allergens, poison ivy included. My first 33 years on this planet I used to weed poison ivy out with my bare hands. Never a single reaction. The past 2 years - man o man I've had it over every square inch of my body about 20 to 30 seperate times I've broken out in rashes

Enough with "leaves of three, let it be" so many plants have three leaves. Horrible phrase, not an identifying feature.
The statement is used to help the common person to start understanding. Adding statements like “ berries white flee in fright” and “if the stem is hairy it is scary” also help with the id. More technical descriptions often discourage folks. I try to add photos to my videos to also aid. The 3 leaf stems form a letter "T", that means trouble. That rhymes with P and that stands for poison. Even in river city when playing pool. Two short stems and the longer one goes to the end leaf. Most all trefoils are equal length.
