@@ribeyerare8971I want a redbreast sunfish as a pet. Anything I need to know about keeping. Like number of fish, size of tank, feeding (can they eat worms, I have a worm farm)
Native fish aren’t boring. They just don’t look colorful most of the time. Keeping a fish you caught gives you almost a euphoric feeling because of the fact that you yourself caught it. And yes if you keep them as cichlids and feed them pellets everyday they would be as boring as a dull cichlids. But you have to do stuff with the,, like feeding them worms, and insects. And starting feeding frenzies. That’s where they shine the most. Not being fed pellets. Shrimp can be used for feeding frenzies, they don’t have to eat live food. And get longear and red breast if you want something colorful
Agreed but keeping native fish in most places is illegal… besides that I’ve done it and it’s wonderful. Stupid laws that make no sense.. government for you
Bluegills are really cute and get a lot of personality. Also they stay lighter and have more iridescence when they are not picked on. I got an unknown fry from a pet store once that turned into a bluegill. He knew who was going to feed him and seemed smarter than my other fish. He grew pretty fast in just a couple years. He went from a 10 to a 30 to a 55. We eventually put a kiddie pool in a guest bedroom and he was very happy. He ate lots of guppies and pellets and cubes and anything you wanted to slip him that you were eating. He was a good little fish, maybe the best of em.
Reading this was like watching an episode of Little House on the Prairie, only of the fish keeping world. Such amazing fish and their keepers. This young man in the video over crowds them in too small of a tank though, and doesn't provide them nearly enough plants to hide in 🙁
Bro that was AWESOME. How you spoke the truth to “power”..... you just helped many people with you opening up about your drinking and being honest about that,,, just as you’ve helped many in the industry better their aquariums ! Peace and great fortune to you!
Hey Chris: Life has it’s ebb and flow just like aquariums. Glad to hear you are doing better. Most don’t know it, but all of us could benefit from some head shrinking from time to time. I have a 55 with three bluegill raised from fry. Its not my favorite tank, but I still really enjoy it. It’s decorated with an old rod and reel, beer bottle, coke can, and a boat propeller. These guys are super aggressive and have a lot of personality. Robert in San Francisco
I keep a large tank with a green sunfish, rock bass, and black crappie. If you don't care for bluegill, a green sunfish is surprisingly entertaining and tame up easily if wild caught. It's by far the most 'friendly' of the three. I kept a largemouth bass before that. It was the most engaging fish I've ever had. It remember things, recognized people, and tamed up well to the point that I could pet him in the tank. Downside was food demands and aggression. Could not keep anything else in the tank without it being eaten or bullied to death. But I think a green sunfish is a nice all-around 'starter' fish if you want to keep native. They're very colorful, tame easy, and easy to care for.
Personally, I love not only cichlids, but also sunfishes, gouramis, and catfishes. I think they’re all really cool, with fascinating colors, patterns, behaviors, and personalities. On the sunfish end, I’ve kept bluegill, spotted sunfish, and green sunfish. They were all so cool, especially the green sunfish! Greenies are aggressive, territorial, and predatory, and they make great aquarium fish. Behaviorally they are a lot like the cichlids of Central America and West Africa, eg - like Jack Dempsey and Salvini, or like jewel fish and five star generals, respectively. An interesting difference is that when it comes to spawning and digging, cichlids use their mouths to move gravel, while sunfishes use their tails to sweep it away. I’ve never kept long ear sunfish, but from what I’ve seen they’re some of the most beautiful aquarium fish in the world, and every bit as interesting in their behaviors as cichlids. That’s why I’m a fan of both families. Don’t knock ‘em till you really try ‘em!
Not boring...your blue gill isn't happy. It is dark and unhappy. When they are happy their colors come out. Just like any fish. I have two and omg awesome!! So much personality! Don't get me started on the tricks for food lol! Just the best! They are like two puppies! I will take yours lol!
I have kept all sorts of tropical fresh and saltwater fish in my day. I currently run a 125 planted native with a couple bluegill and 3 longear sunfish. Its my favorite tank Ive ever had. I tried to make it look like a natural lake bottom. I love it but it's all subjective.
My favourite fish in my over 100+ fish collection of tropical fish and rare plecos; My single sunfish that I caught in a pond and raised is my FAVOURITE! He’s the puppy I never had 🤣 if he’s hungry in the middle of the night he’ll lift his lid until I feed him. If I forget to close the lid he’ll spit at the top and won’t dare jump out all though he very well could. He even flashes sand at me when I feed him too much spirulina and not enough protein like a child afraid of medicine. 13 tanks and I honestly think about one of them more than the rest! 🐠
Hey Palmer it's been a while. I moved a while back and have no tanks up at the moment. The pond behind my house is full of warmouth and was thinking of setting a tank up for one
Our green sunfish are freaking immortal! We had a huge freeze about a week ago and we have an outdoor trough pond with sunfish in it,it froze almost completely, but after it thawed out,the fish were still in there as if nothing happened, all these fancy chiclids and Oscar’s would’ve been frozen over, not the sunfish.
From my experience fishing for these little guys, I know they can be voracious eaters. I never kept any in an aquarium, but when I've chummed the water while fishing they will swarm around and even break the surface of the water. I wanted to see how close they'd come to the shore, so I placed raw chicken in the water right next to the bank. The bluegills would swim up so close I could see their dorsal fins and eyes poking out of the water. They practically Beached themselves. They are definitely fun little creatures.
Just found out about your channel today and because of you I'm wanting to get back into keeping fish again thank you for sharing your knowledge in your content on fish keeping😊
The bluegill would be extremely vibrant and colorful if he wasnt bullied. I have a bluegill, green sunfish, and a rock bass. They all have insane colors. All about having the right tank mates. They really shine when you feed them
