I bought my Anschutz Model 54 in 1964 and shot it in smallbore competition for 25 years. loved that rifle. My vision has deteriorated over the years and even my 25X Lyman Super Targetspot can't save me. I NEVER had a problem with the rifle and all I fed it was Eley match grade ammo.

My Dad used to tinker with Ruger 10/22s and get hits on steel over 200yrds. There is a lot you can do with even just a stock 10/22 to improve accuracy. But to wring out the most accuracy he would weight the whole .22LR round to check for consistent weights, group up the different weights and see which one the gun like the best. Its odd but it worked.

@@prone_wolf8871 Weighing the rounds was only one thing my Dad did to the 10/22, other steps were securing the action into the stock to stop action wobble, dressing the barrel face to match the action face, lapping the barrel, cleaning up the trigger and checking for rim thickness on the rounds. And yes it did work and with nothing better to do through the winter Dad enjoyed the process. The results we saw validated the work.

I really enjoy 22 ELR. I've gone out to 400m. Sometimes I don't hit anything. The slightest wind makes a huge difference. Great learning curve. I use S&B Club 40gr (1080fps) in my Savage Mark II with Element 4-16X44 on FX no-limit mounts. I can zero out to 450m or so and still have the full reticle to use.

I'm shooting a Kidd Supergrade with 20 inch barrel. I recently compared Eley Precision Benchrest versus Eley Force. Wind was light and variable 3 to 8 MPH at about 20 degrees off a straight headwind. At 50 yards the Precision Benchrest consistently grouped better than the Force as would be expected, but both occasionally threw a flyer that would ruin a 5 shot group. At 300 yards the Force came into its own and proved equal or better consistency on a six inch steel gong. I believe this is because at longer ranges the wind call becomes the biggest factor in hitting the target with .22LR. I think the heavier bullet (42g) and the higher velocity of the Force gave it an advantage over the lighter (40g) and slower Precision Benchrest.

After moving to Renton, Washington back in '91, I found that I had a good place to shoot from the bench at 200 yards. I have a Great Depression era Savage1933 NRA Model (actually a target version of the old Model 19). In former times, it was the cheaper competition for the Winchester Model 52. It has a 1911-patent Lyman target peep sight on a vernier scale. Set at zero, it will print CCI Mini Mags right on at 50 yards. To hit very slightly high at 100 yards, i adjust it up to five. For 200 yards, I have to take it up to 27. I can get four-inch groups at that range shot carefully from the bench with a sandbag rest. More recently, I watched through the telescope as other people were shooting .22 LR ammunition at the 200 yard target. I could actually see the bullets moving into the target. They were falling like a home-run hit over centre field. I know that where they would print at 210 yards and 190 yards would be radically different than where they were hitting at 200. I would surmise that they would miss entirely overhead at 190 and fall down below the bottom at 210. Of course, one would need a precision range finder to know the difference.
When I first started to watch this video, I imagined that these two new Lapua products were super high-velocity wonder cartridges that somehow were able to preserve gilt-edged accuracy out where the daisys grow beyond the place where the bullet speed drops back below the mach one. I was disapppointed to see up-close velocities only in the low 1100's. Groups at reasonable range were impressive out of that precision rifle.
I figured out long ago I could reliably drop rimfire silouette ram targets at 100 meters with the rear sight set to seven and with Remington Target ammunition. Anything beyond that range was simply beyond practical accuracy for the .22 long rifle cartridge. Then it is time to get closer or to use a different rifle/cartridge combination.

Out of my V22 both of these shoot very well. The super long range and the lot I have shoots at 1115 with an insane sd of 3 across my magnetospeed. 10 shot group size at 100 was under a dime. The long range had a measly 5sd 😂 shot at an avg of 1107 and yielded a very comparable group. Now my Vudoo loves Lapua anything SK ammo included (has to be the Lapua snot lube), but that little boost in velocity at the 600yd and beyond targets we shoot our 22lr elr at really helps when you find yourself running out of adjustment, and the consistency in shot after shot out of my rifle is mind bending. Make sure you have velocities in both cold and warm weather because in my experience anyways I get almost 100fps slower in 20 degrees F than 75.

Not possible to shoot out a 22lr barrel, unless using corrosive ammo & not cleaning it after shooting. Old 22s aren't shot out but rather deteriorated from old corrosive ammo & lack of cleaning. Even centerfire rifles don't shoot out barrels. They erode the throat & usually a barrel setback & rechamber will bring it's accuracy back. Pretty hard to wear out chrome moly or SS with lead or copper. I have a sub 6lb walnut stock Kimber Sporter in 22LR that shoots anything I put in it very well. Came from the factory with a target with 5 shots in 4/10".

I've been shooting long distance long before you were born. I shoot 45-70 at 1,000 yards
and 22LR at 400. I'm shooting antique rifles that are over 120 years old. They are schuetzen rifles that have been relined to shoot 22LR. They have 30 inch barrels. What do you think is good shooting at 50 yards is what I would call average shooting at 400.
I use 22LR hyper velocity Winchester ammo.
1435fps gets the job done with less bullet drop. I use Lyman Super Targetspot scopes, a 20X and a 24X. At 100 yds it's a no-brainer to put 5 shots inside a ¼ inch circle. I shoot a 1903 Stevens 44 /Jerry Gebby custom, an 1892 Swiss Martini with double set triggers by Widmer and a 1912 Stevens 414 with a 29 inch barrel. All of my 22LR rifles are single shot. I should add that I'm a retired machinist
and have mechanically restored all the original tolerances.
The most important things to remember when shooting long distance is repeatability. This means, you follow the same procedures for every shot. Your barrel is clean and in good condition. In my opinion, it is not necessary to mic every bullet or worried if the bullet is concentric. I have found it makes no difference.
It's all about the equipment, the ammo and the twist rate if you want to shoot accurately whether it's 50/400/600 yards.

I’ve been shooting 22LR bench competition for about 8mos now out to 250Yds at small steel plates. My gun is a 20” CZ457 MTR in an MDT XRS chassis with a EC Tuner. I burned through a ton of ammo and lot numbers trying to find the best combo for accuracy. I started at the ELEY test facility in Winters Texas and shot 15 different lots of Eley Match and Tenex. My gun didn’t like any of it. So I tried all the SK and Lapua match ammo up to SK long range Center X and Midas +. SKLR was best and most of the top match competitors also shoot this ammo in their CZ MTRs. Two weeks ago I decided to try Lapua long range in practice and beat my highest previous score by almost 50 points. My best match finish was 15th place with a score of 210. With Lapua long range I finished in 2nd place with a 257. I’m thinking about trying the super LR now. I have never done it before and think it would be a great opportunity to enjoy a new challenge. Love your channel and keep the 22lr content coming! Cheers

I tried eley team ammo for the first time and got .8” at 100. I couldn’t believe it. I’ve gone out to 3-400 yards a few times but it’s super super tough. I’ll use Winchester subs or Cci subs for that. I practice on 4” Steel at 2-250 yards cuz I really wanna get better. I still suck 🤣😭😅

These days the top 22lr shooters are found in the IR 50/50 class. My father is a hall of famer in the sport and a world record holder. 22lr is by far the funnest shooting. It teaches you so much about yourself and brings a person back to the true "101's" of shooting, if you know what I mean. Really enjoyed this video and will definitely be subscribing to ultimate reloader. Thank you for bringing some attention to the rimfire class of shooting! My family is all about it!

I used to have a J.C. Higgins bolt action single shot .22 with iron sights, and I could hit a squirrel in the head out to 100 yards. Unfortunately someone stole it out of my truck along with my brand new turkey shotgun. I haven't found another .22 in my price range that can shoot as good as that one. Right now I have a Springfield model 15 trap gun and it shoots ok out to 60 yds, but then it starts throwing lead wide.

In my quest for long range I've taken it to a level even more silly! Trying to get to 200 yards with a Daisy 880. I'm getting hits at 120 on a 10" plate. The problem is I have run out of scope! Both adjustment and hold over. Next we'll try to add an adjustable rail!

    • @brianwolf692009
      @brianwolf692009 Рік тому +3

The 880 doesn't have the oomph to get a good pattern out to 200 yds. I've tried for years. I've gotten lucky a few times by just pointing it up higher than the target and guesstimating windage.

@Brian Johnson last time I shot at 100, I did ok, 5" if I remember correctly, so pretty confident. I'll increase the target to 24" if I have to. I just want to say I did it or can do it!

  • @jarkoer

On a day without any wind I can easily touch bullet holes at 100 (the max my particular range will go) with just your plain-jane CCI Standard, a Ruger American Rimfire carbine and a $50 scope off of Amazon. (This has quite ticked off one of my shooting buddies as my set-up gives his $1200 set-up a run for its money whenever we shoot competitively!) Unfortunately CCI isn't always as consistent as I would like. I'll have to check out these Lapua bullets. Better than having a nice set-up is having ammo that it likes and practicing good shooting techniques. As an aside, I've gotten into break-barrel air rifles a few years back. Now THOSE are a challenge to shoot accurately at distance! Pellets and a shooting technique that your gun likes becomes absolutely crucial. It's not uncommon for people to become frustrated with a break barrel and toss them in the trash. If you think you're a good marksman, a break barrel can quickly humble anyone! lol

Very nice review, thank you for sharing. .22 LR is a very underestimated and fun cartridge. I have an old Remington 552 Speedmaster semi auto .22 LR that I bought used in 1980 put on a Burris 4x scope. I would rest it across the roof of our car and shoot at an old highway sign at 430 yards. Put the top of the rectangular sign so the corners just touched the bottom edges of the scope and split it in the middle with the vertical cross hair. Fire three shots pause and listen to the three rings from the sign. Bang, Bang Bang...Ting, Ting Ting. It was a repeatable science anytime I wanted to do it on a calm day it worked. It fails to feed reliably anymore but I still shoot it single shot.

Love shooting NRL22 with my Ruger Rimfire Precision. Nothing fancy about the rifle other than a Gemtech suppressor and a Vortex Viper PST Gen II scope. Still trying to find a substitute ammo for the discontinued Federal Gold Medal Ultra Match. I want to try some of the Lapua ammo, but just can't afford it. I have had decent luck with Federal Gold Medal Target (911b) but can't find that any more. Love the channel!!

High-end custom 22LR are all the rage now. I'll agree that 22LR bolt rifles are fun but if I am plinking with a 22 bore, I'd rather just get the 22-250 out with some custom hand loads and a 10/22. I have a blast with that combination. There's something for everyone...

I've noticed when shooting 22 at 300 yards and beyond, changes in wind mean large changes in elevation. I think I've seen the center of my groups change a full mil depending on wind. I've got notes on my phone of windage and corresponding elevation changes for wind. Off the top of my head (my phone is dead), I believe 300 yards means a regular 4+ MIL of windage adjustment and 1 mil of average elevation. It's enough to be off of a 12" plate even if I get the wind read and windage correct and forget to make the corresponding elevation hold. This is without much wind. I think a 175 SMK out of 308 Win would be about 1/20th that much deviation.
As for ammo and rifle, I went cheap. I'm running a Bergara B14R and until very recently, exclusively CCI SV. I'm aware CCI SV is not good for this due to velocity deviation. I'm also using a 30mm scope on a 30 MOA mount, so I'm having to use reticle holds until something like 150 yards. The scope is a Vortex Viper PST FFP 6-24 first generation. I'm using it because it cost me $950 and has glass so bad it cannot be used to identify a freshly painted steel plate much past 350 yards. Everybody that reviewed those things positively should be ashamed. The thing's been RMAed twice for other issues. If it cost me $200, I'd feel ripped off. So I feel very ripped off.

but now I have rebuilt my dads .22 (the first rifle I ever shot) and will be shooting it long range it is a marlin mdl 81 dl
I found a similar rifle to really hot rod that isn't a family heirloom
it is like an mdl 80 but an off brand a glenfield 25
I sanded and refinished the stock, free-floated the barrel and put a weaver scope on
the scope is the same vintage as the rifle
shoots great at 100 yards dont have anything longer at the moment
