- Skullgirls is a Fighting Game I've always loved, so I thought I'd go over the cursed history of its development. If there's any misinformation in this video regarding Alex Ahad, Mike Zaimont, or anybody else involved, please let me know. We'd be more than willing to do a followup video if anything was wrong.

True, but it's people like them that are the main reason why video game companies have a policy where they refuse to accept ideas or concepts from fans or other people who do not work for the company, as it can result in such legal situations.
Skullgirls is one of the most unfortunate games ever. Whenever things are looking up for the game, there’s always something that brings it right back down.
It’s a shame because the game itself is AMAZING. It sucks that it has to go through so much trouble.

Okay, i'm arriving late to the party but I liked the video... Except for the part about Mike Z's removal, which is highly misinformed. He didn't interact with a "fan", it was a popular cosplayer who was outed for being manipulative and abusive called BunnyAyumi, who explicitly messaged him in private to talk about the game by literally bringing up lesbian BDSM, baiting Mike into saying inappropiate stuff, despite him trying this best to not be inappropiate and even asking for her consent to ask personal questions, to which he writes "humans with p*nises" in an attempt to avoid comming off as transphobic since the dude is literally autistic and sucks at communication.
After this incident, a shitstorm ensues where the company backstabs him by organizing to leave together at the same time since Mike Z didn't want to be fired in the same way that happened with Alex Ahad, while making shit up about him to ruin his reputation... All of the proof regarding this is present in the current lawsuit, and the channel Technicals organized all of it in an hour long video discussing the entire timeline of these events in-depth, while also exposing how inconsistent and contradictory all of the accusations against Mike Z are in light of the available facts.

@@jamesrosewell9081 I'm absolutely disgusted, it was done by a bunch of transphobic losers who believed that the game was nothing more than a "psyop" to entice the masses into liking incest, and that the game would further cause the "downfall of the West"... It's honestly baffling how we can't have games exploring taboo subjects despite a similar controversy taking place decades ago with Rule of Rose, where journalists who never played the game began saying that it's about p*edophilia and sexually harassing minors, as well as killing them (as you might already expect, none of this was part of the game).
I expected the gaming community to mature and learn from mistakes like this, but here we are... Losing our minds over an indie game that doesn't even focuses on incest, while harassing the creator to the point of revealing her personal information without consent.
I was gonna comment a similar thing about this , if im honest i think no one in the dev team of skull girls is normal cuz most women in the dev team were talking menstruation and porn in general and mike was like trying the best to not sound weird as fuck and even avoiding and changing subject
the fact that skullgirls is still alive and well after everything it's been through is wild to me, it's lived twice the lifespan of the average fighting game and been through enough development troubles and controversies to kill an AAA game multiple times over yet it's still going strong, and I'm very happy for it. it's truly a one-of-a-kind game and it's always a fun time whenever I boot it up even though I suck. I hope that no matter what else the game has to deal with in the future it'll still pull through

@@Jerome18921 the craziest thing is the censorship controversy basically didn't affect the actual playerbase at all, the game's steam player counts look basically the same before and after. Due to its fundamental design ideas skullgirls is a game that's always going to be causing controversies and its players are used to it at this point, I honestly don't think anything can truly kill the skullgirls playerbase
Is Alex Ahad consultant for future Skullgirl characters? These are his characters and his art style, he should be the one to tell and finish the story, when it is time.
Sadly, he left the outline of like 20 characters, so he kinda left the cheat sheet.

its like 343 Industries promising stuff for Halo only to dissapoint their fans and breaking promises they said they were not gonna break (the split screen fiasco 3 times, the second was bad, by the 3rd, people would totally shit on them because the studio repeated many times how they were not gotta cut splitscreen after how much it angered Halo fans the other 2 times)

kinda sucks that the artist behind the characters ended up getting fired and separated from his own shit. Can definitely say that'd suck as an artist.
Future Club ironically tried to make their game more “accessible,” and ended up alienating their devoted audience. And it still didn’t work, because I feel like Skullgirls has yet to go mainstream with popularity. Damn.
Tbh, the majority of the people bitching and moaning about these miniscule cosmetic changes have like less that three hours on the actual game, so they probably haven't even played it and are just butthurt coomers.

Not telling the whole story about why Mike and Alex actually quit and just summing it up to them being "terrible people"(not what you said but basically it) is both offensive and misleading, I hope that you later apologize and correct this mistake, for the things these 2 people had to deal with(and Mike is still dealing with) are just depressing when you really dig into it.
I will admit Mike's situation is more complicated than the video lets on, but the implication for both is most definitely not that they're terrible people. Alex is one of my biggest artistic inspirations and I even visited his booth at this most recent Anime Expo. I am not attempting to skew the narrative in any way other than finding it funny Mike talked about men with penises when flirting with a girl.

Censordship towards the artbook was a major L towards the dev team.
Every character in Skullgirls is a fetish character, often multiple fetishes in one, so it's hilarious hearing the devs censoring their work, they'd have to delete the whole game and start from scratch for that.

Honestly not just because Alex draws suggestive stuff all the time, its also because people came out about it that he was also lazy with the story and his job. At the time of making Indivisible, there are old videos of Alex Ahad showing what the plot of Indivisible would have been like, but it was him constantly rewriting the story and also not coming into work or even him with his terrible work ethic ultimately lead him to being fired. We don't even see any of what he originally intended in Indivisible's final game. People are saying that Skullgirls needs Alex Ahad to make the game good again, but he hasn't had any sort of relevancy in other works aside from this one, he's sorta just a one hit wonder, random things that he came up with just worked and clicked with this game.
Its such a shame because Indivisible fans cant even get their dlc characters put in due to Mike Z firing everyone

I’ve been wishing for a while that WayForward would be able to acquire both Indivisible and Skullgirls; they were one of the LEAST controversial indie developers and the guys who produced Shantae and co-worked on River City Girls.

The only changes necessary from the new censorship update were the crosses on Valentine's design because it breaks the Geneva Convention but man was it sad to have the rest of the changes
actually it was patched long ago by changing her red crosses into pink ones, the redesign that turned some of the crosses into shuriken was more of an added bonus that fitted her a lot more.
And maybe the red arm bands on the black egrets..... but other than that, yeah. The rest weren't needed.

Another part of what was removed includes some of the fanarts and artworks included into the art gallery of the game. As well as some stuff that what was available in the Artbook DLC that people actively paid for.

Honestly a lot of the censorship other than the red armbands I haven't noticed. I see panties at least 30 times a play session when I play skullgirls mobile on allegedly censored characters. *Presumably* changes made to the main game would cascade onto mobile.
The only part I really care about is big bands story.

The one last thing Skullgirls needs right now. Is a character in a Crossover game. Perhaps Indie Pogo would elect Filia to be in the roster?
Now what I'm seeing after some digging about Mike's side, he said he was framed with these allegations. The screenshots people gave were cropped, not showing the whole convos that they were the first to bringup these convos and not by Mike(even tho they said he was the one that did). What's even crazier is that an alegal paper by Mike himself (since this is being brought to court) that he's on the autism spectrum(which might somewhat explain why not reading the room correctly has caused some heavy backlash.) I'm not too sure on which side I am on because most of this IS being settled outside what the internet can see so we have bits and pieces. We can sightly conclude to 'yes he abused people in the workplace' or 'a bunch of people took advantage of a person with a disorder' until all this court stuff is concluded and there's announcements that happens. Man this makes my brain hurt. (Btw I thank so much about you making this vid. Hella good and it helped me keep up to speed. Especially since I didn't pay attention to the stuff back in 2015 cause I was too fixated on the game itself and not what's been goin on behind the scenes and its community.)
I was about to comment this stuff too, Mike Z's lawsuit appeal even went into detail on how some staff would wear inappropriate attire to work and made some other staff feel uncomfortable. That the majority of the staff were long time friends with Mike and they frequently talked with one another and that eventually the staff made a separate Discord server just to shit on him behind his back throw him under the bus and take the company Lab Zero Games for themselves. In all honesty I think the majority of the SkullGirls staff are just terrible people. Not including Alex Ahad or Mike Z tbh, Mike doesn't really strike me as a bad person with malicious intent, just a socially awkward guy who lacks social cues or basic understanding.
I can understand the point you want to make and more or less put something in gray side, but he only coming out having a spectrum of autism after lab zero died. You can search for it if you put "Mike autism" on Google and it will show the tweet which he said it and see that he only did that after lab zero was dead. I think it pretty convenient that he only seek help after lab zero dying and not before where he could seek for medical help. Also I will not say that future club devs are without fault regarding this matter but I don't think they would make a elaborate plan to screw Mike if their relationship wasn't already bad, also the crops on that twitter girl doesn't to be fake since it came out of nowhere when that happen if you remember correctly if you being paying attetion to the game since 2015. The allegations only came out in 2019-2020 if I remember correctly. I know people with personality disord and autism, but none of them really strike as mean spirit as Mike, autism can make people relationship complicated but it doesn't make them a bad person. Mike also made that joke regarding Flyod's case on stream many people went to help and apologize for his behavior. I find odd that the same people that tried to help him also would only turn theirs back to him without a reason. I myself have a personally one that I can't really prove happen where he started berating a person while commenting on stream for no apparent good reason, he said something like "you're not capable to stream my game" and I think he said that that person should never stream SG again. I can't really remember to who he said that but it's something that make remember that there stuff outside of all that are know by the community where the dude is a jerk for sure.
@@tiagocouto887 That is true. It's weird that now he's seeking out medical help even though he should've been doing this before lab zero broke off. It's a chance he was seeking it out because other's pointed out he had some traits of being autistic but he didn't take it seriously/had other priorities until the reports have happened(in Mike's alegal paper). I actually have a little bro that's autistic as well and has a hard time to speak his mind, so it's harder to understand him if you don't know him well enough(also ye he a sweet dude). It's also a possibility that with miscommunications came with bad backlash from Mike Z to the rest of the crew.
And yea I've started watching gameplay and tournaments(cause I couldn't afford the game nor had a console to play it on) back around late 2015 early 2016. I remember when I bought indivisible, saw that it was incomplete but it's going to get updates and dlc. But then the reports of Mike being an A in the workplace, stopping any future updates in an 75% completed game kinda bummed me out. That's weirdly how I found out about the allegations when there was only going to be a final dlc update when there was going to be a plethora of updates.

My cousin has bipolar personality and he always seeing more or less distant from myself and his family. His family seek medical attention way before on his teenage years but he suffered a lot. Mike may truly have a spectrum of autism but the relationship with the community (at least the people that being old in the community) pretty much tainted by now.
@@shriderrad4123 Yea the creators never struck to me as bad people either, but do lean on that miscommunication can leave to sour aftermaths. Ahad was able to give a proper answer about the sexism controversy that I side on greatly, but he did draw a very inappropriate animation without telling anyone in the team, which does seem weird. It might've been the same for Mike as well. Where he is a really cool dude but bad at reading the room(example making a joke out of someone's recent death). It went to the point that the side glances leaned into more bad mouthing(whether some of the affiliations are true or not) then into creating a different discord server to try to get him off the team. I've heard that he is in credits in some games(I'm not too sure what) in the dying down of the heat of this controversy which is interesting to hear and raises some questions.

Basically yeah. And the numbers are still as low as ever, even when Marie releases you can bet your sweet bippy that the numbers will STILL stay the same no matter what until its imminent end and the game is dead.
As someone that being playing the game since 2017, the only decision that I can disagree its regarding Band's story mode being changed, all of the others things were things that old players always found odd, didn't like or were neutral to it. To me its make sense removing them since when people started point out them I myself started disliking them. Also the majority of the old team its on the new team. The reason that Mike and Ahad not making part of the new team are different, Mike fired everybody and killed Lab Zero while killing Indivisiable since all the animation team that worked with it also worked with SG for at least 10 years was fired and Future Club was created and started working in the game since SG's IP was sold way back in the day for Atumn Games for multiple reasons. Ahad left through internal team decisions which even Mike was ok with that.

I had a friend who is *Obsessed* with this game to the point that his Discord icon has been the stabby nurse lady since, like, *Years* ago. All I ever knew about it was "Slightly lewd anime girl fighting game" and honestly I gotta say that I am surprised the artist behind the character creations didn't make sure he was working with people as horny as he was.
and I say that not as a shot at him for being horny but as also a artist who draws horny or NSFW shit as well. lol
and, well, technically I am a game dev first and foremost, but I haven't released a game in years. I guess it also applies to D&D as well... or really any group thing. Look, if you wanna be horny, be horny with others who are also horny, simple.

Its honestly a testament to how much the fans kept this alive after 10 years despite its rocky moments.
I was there on Twitter during the 2nd wave of censorship and it was basically telling the fans who stuck through the end that their content will be cut because its "UN PC". This was game popularized because its hen tie and style and now after 10 years they have problem while acting like the moral police when their artists ALSO did lewd art!?
Lets face it the 2 people who made the game turned out to be jerks and everyone knows they cant make a sequel as evident by the 10 years of little progress. So they desperately try to make it into the mainstream market while erasing the games identity in the first place.
I think it's possible that the 2 people who had the vision of the game were lewd, while they hired a prude crew. And the moment raunchy people were out of way they could work against that vision. Thooo with the limited budget they didn't do all that much.
And try to get some marketing through being moral and just by removing problematic content.

Ima be real: I started on the mobile app, so I had no idea about all this. This is all really crazy, cuz I genuinely love the mobile game and feel bad for the people who want to enjoy the original game. Maybe there is some hope for this game about a curse to get out of its own curse

Its crazy after a few months of this situation i heard they added a new soviet voice pack with a new VA with the marie dlc. Honestly still a fun game with awesome characters just its doomed to be cursed and have something bad happen to them constantly.

Just starting its just for the second comment i have no opinion on the last thought, its mainly for the second one.
i agree with the first one, the mobile one was a disaster, still to this day having difficulty of people playing, it just happens to still be alive.
But it wasnt actually just the pantyshots they removed, LOTS and LOTS of fan art that was there in the artwork section, they also reworked a lot, so there is no longer some the fanart people did. It did was like punching the fans in the face they literally said no to the content they used to say yes.

Now regarding the IP rights for the game, he would need to buy it from Autumn Games, the current holders of the IP and somewhat convince the current team to working with him or for him. The current team has being animated SG for at least 10 years now and you don't see the same quality of work in animation for a game very often. There are few games right now that are draw by hand, SG, Cuphead and Banner Saga are some examples, and in my knowledge SG is a fighting game and the art is gorgeous. SG is very impresive on its right.

the staff left are the type of people who would totally scream at the sight of Ecchi Anime for being ecchi (which is the point)

@@sharzinlalebazri5673 I mean its seams malicious intented since I don't actually know the majority of people that are complaing about the game, most of them came from the sales on that month, I saw I lot of 0-10 hours negative reviews. I play this game since 2017 and I have 5000 hours in game, and never heard of anyone that is complaining right now. I genuality think the majority just don't like censorship, don't actually know who was Mike Z for community, why his VA was removed, and haven't being part to the conversations that we had regarding how odd/bad its was for the game having nazist iconograph and minors being sexualized. I didn't like the removed the Robocop reference in Big Band's story mode but to me at least are the majority of things being complained are minors things regarding how well made the game is. I don't think the game should even be sold for 2.50 dollars on steam's sale at all.
Also not only people complanied about the changes on steam but some hackers hacked the mobile version's chat for like a month, terrorizing people who still playing it, saying the would delete people accounts and showing "X" person just won super character "Y".(Just to correct myself, saying that the dev team actually disable the chat while try to solve the problem and not super clear what they want to do or if was actually having anything to do with the censorship but the time frame lead people to believe it was target because of that. I myself wanted to understand why they done that but I don't really understand russian/ukrainian. You can search for videos on youtube showing hackers on SG mobile's chat.)

Nice to know it’s 2024 and skullgirls is still going through hell and back, and it seems the only thing keeping it alive is removing a lot of the charm and original art and soul that the game had, say what you will, taking out content from a game and not replacing it with anything else is just a bad move to the fans.
If you hate censorship then don't complain when someone makes something thats too edgy, other ppl might enjoy it, let them enjoy it and go do something else,

came back to skullgirls after a few years and im seeing these videos on controversy (Technicals in depth explanation on the controversy, made 3 months after this video, sheds more light on the situation). It's so damn hard to support skullgirls when Future Club really feels like the biggest jerk here. Mike Z made mistakes sure but like... Future Club OG members basically got away with it. and they definitely were the scummiest part of the whole thing.
This game is the best . I love it. The caretachers... the lore...magic , magic . Skullgirls changed my vision of life for the story and I think that nothing can change my opinion . I m the biggest fan of Skullgirls ❤

I truly find odd people defending Mike. They indeed removed the VA which Mike dubbed that was backed way back the day and it does sucks that aren't replacing with anything new. But if you were around 2019-2020 there is no way people would be defending Mike like some poor soul that was robbed. SG almost died cause Mike is pretty much someone very difficult to deal with outside all the allegations sexual harassment stuff. Lets not forget that people did try defending when he made that stupid joke regarding Flyod's case but the sexual allegations doesn't seem to be false at all. Indivisible was also funded by the community and died without being completed. I used that VA a lot but since Mike killed Lab Zero and its seems not want to take responsability for anything that happenned, I just stopped to using it. There 2 things that doesn't make to me trust Mike, the first of them is a personal one which I was watching a stream on 2018-2019 where Mike was commented and he started berating the person that was streaming for no good reason, he said something like "you aren't capable to stream my game" and I think he said something like that the person shouldn't stream SG anymore, this one I can prove. The second thing its after Lab Zero died, he made a public statement on his twitter saying he had being diagnosed with autism. Although I may see it explaing why he is like that, its was way convinient to himself saying something like this while everbody hating him for what he have done and I know people with mental disoders that have complicated relationships because it but none acts like he did regarding people, his relationship with the community/dev team is pretty much broken. I have played this game since 2017 and I think you should trust me at least regarding Mike.
Anything regarding the fan art being removed, I think people complaining without know how many of them were removed, it's was some like 3 fan art's. Regarding "muh nazism", its odd to portraying hegrets being linked to nazism while being like the only major force of good now between the 3 main factions. That was a old complaining that came way back than 2018 that was often commented by old players that complained on the community main discord and the official forum for the community, this and the sexualization of minors that always gave complicated feelings for people that started considering playing the game.
