Most informative video about VR I've seen so far...
I was about to say the same thing. I've seen many people try to explain VR and none have even come close to the explanation given here.
Agreed!
Well he mainly just spoke about racing and flight sims, not the room scale gaming that the HTC Vive offers. I wish they went into that experience.
That's a little less interesting since all vr devices will offer that in the future.
It's not. Honestly, it sounds like that guy hasn't tried modern VR. He seems to be giving an opinion based on VR headsets from 10 years ago.
MetalJesusRocks you are awesome. Still after so many subscribers you are yourself and polite. Not everyone would mention Dave Nunez' Participation again in the video and thank for him.
This video makes me want to read Ready Player One again!! :)
This was so helpful! Tired of reading comments of people arguing and everyone talks like they know what they are saying. This guy has 10 years of research and learning the technology before many of us even cared and so I trust his comments and facts more than some 25 year old guy that read Wikipedia and has built a couple of PCs before.
I just finished reading it! I'm really looking forward to see how the movie pans out in 2018 :)
That Samus shirt is badass! Thanx for the vr video. I've been trying to gauge wether or not to take the plunge into vr early or not.
Love that book. I've just bought Armada (Ernest Cline's next book) to take on my hols next month, I hope it's as good as Ready Player One.
I just started reading today, and you mentioned.....we are connected dude!
bring this guy back ,super intelligent, make a video of him explaining how to manage motion sickness in video games
The break down of the cost and development was extremely interesting. More so then the question lol. Thanks for answering it in such a great way guys.
Thank you for the question! It was fun to go back and think about this stuff after almost 10 years.
I'm surprised you weren't more excited about the current state of VR given your background in the subject! While its true that there are many body senses still to be fooled until we arrive at the full Holodeck experience everyones been dreaming of for years - my time with the HTC Vive has been phenomenal! The combination of full movement within the play boundaries in the room, combined with the commonly used "blink" teleportation system to move the play area within the game world has completely alleviated any motion or simulator sickness that I had anticipated. Seems like for every issue raised, theres an ingenious solution being worked on immediately :D
All that being said, it is hella'expensive to jump into at this point. But overall its worked out cheaper than some holidays i've been on, and in the last 3 weeks i've had more memorable experiences out of it than i can count! Looking forward to the class action lawsuits 10 years from now when 1/4 of the gaming population have mole-eye syndrome ^_^
+Dave Nunez (Rabbit Engineering) thanks for the info man ! now off to the link so I can possibly buy a mini 3 d printed console !!
The main cost is for the big amounts of data being stored and moved in a live format. 8K worth of live 360' picture data to be processed, stored, etc
Possibly your best video yet...
A lot of cool & accurate info presented in a simple way.
Congrats
Great freaking episode !! Daves knowledge was super interesting to hear, i would love to hear more about like future problems with VR (such as controls) and have Dave explain it. Great stuff !!
Dave looks a bit like Eugene Levy from American Pie lol
Yeah I bought a oculus and not even a minute into project cars I was puking.
Third fucking corner.
just for the explanation on vr and him going into depth about it made this video fantastic. Mr Nunez is a very informative person and metal Jesus I love your videos
LOVED this discussion on VR! This vid definitely educated me more on VR than a lot of other vids out there. I'm gaming on a Gear VR and love it! Thanks for posting!
I've been hooked on VR for 3 years now. Bought the DK1 Oculus Rift, and each version that followed. Their latest unit, the consumer model, is just perfect!
VR is WELL worth it! And the games are starting to get pretty amazing too! :D Plus E3 should have plenty of new announcements..
Until you experience a virtual lan-party, or other equally deep uses of VR, don't underestimate VR, it has to be tried to understand. I can sit in a virtual room, with friends currently in other countries, see a virtual holographic screen of their desktop PC in front of them, and have mine in front of me, we can watch movies on a big screen together, or play virtually any classic 2D non-VR game, on virtual screens, and interact as if they were here IRL. When we can't play a proper VR game together, or we want to play something that doesn't have VR mode, we do that now! ;D
Thanks so much! Dave, you have really explained VR in a way that makes sense to people who don't have a phD. MJ you ROCK!
Have you guys tried "the void"? These are game facilities usually in resort areas that use tech like this to run you through a simulated adventure. The one I did was at Disney world. You play as a rebel spy trying to infiltrate Vader's castle. You get into fire fights with storm troopers and it really does draw you in. I don't know where the nearest one to Seatle is, but you should definitely check it out.
Awesome guest! Bring him back for some more stuff he knows about.
I really like the PlayStation VR. I have shown VR Worlds: Ocean Descent (the shark cage) to soo many VR first-timers and they love it. Would love to see some theme park rides being licensed for the VR. Disneyworld Avatar, Toy Story Mania, or Soarin' would be so rad. If PS VR would focus on fixed point or "on rail" experiences for now, it would have a solid market without the typical FPS movement issues. Could you imagine Sin & Punishment on VR?
Dave !!!! I loved that u came in and did this would love to see you do more videos on this platform about the more technical aspect of vr/gaming along the lines of game theory's "digressing and side questing"
i wanted to add, you have the best guests on your channel... i love it, theres a variety of genius in your videos, if you don't have the answer, you will invite someone who does, and its always such a good time.
I've had the impression that playing flight sims and racing sims would be the most immersive use for VR, and Dave told us all why those would be more immersive experiences. Very cool video guys. Awesome insight, Dave!
I really enjoyed Dave Nunez talking. I would like it if you brought him on more often. I found this to be very interesting and he seems to be very knowledgeable in VR, computer graphics and I'm sure computer science in general.
Awesome... this is the most fascinating conversation I've heard in ages! Really interesting stuff, thank you! :-)
For me, the jump to VR was like going from 2D to 3D gaming. That feeling when you first played mario 64 - mind blown! Everyone who hasn’t played VR and go by what others say are doing themselves a HUGE disservice. You owe it to yourselves to give it a try, it’s honestly nothing short of amazing!
I had no idea that the lenses was the real expensive part of this, but as someone who wears glasses, I can understand it. If they standardize this VR stuff and find a way to mass-produce those lenses, I'm sure VR headsets will become a lot cheaper.
Super interesting to listen to you guys go in-depth into the technical aspects of VR. This spiked my interest even more!
Doesn't sound like Dave Nunez has tried the Vive. I have one and can attest it's quite amazing for a variety of gaming experiences, including shooters, action/arcade style gaming, strategy games, adventure, horror, etc. For example, imagine playing a strategy game where your entire floor is the map. And you can walk around it, reach down and pick up units, physically direct actions, and so on. And then of course watching the whole thing come to life in front of your eyes. It's like having a magical, living toy set. The possibilities for gaming w/ VR are incredible and not limited to cockpit sims.
I have not tried it, sounds very interesting based on your description.
Dave, thanks for explaining VR and AR. It's always cool to learn about the science behind what you enjoy.
Great video as always, MJR.
Dave Nunez is awesome, really good video MetalJesus.
More of this guy!
Extremely knowledgable and interesting guest. I really enjoyed this ep MJ
Just started really watching your channel within about the past month. I love the content, easily a new top favorite. Keep it up!
wow i loved this video, so informative I had no idea so much went into account when making VR headsets a reality, thank you.
Great video, man! Leanerd a lot. Thanks Dave!!
Hearing you mention Google cardboard without laughing made my day!
This video is so amazing. Bring this dude back!
The scent machine made me think of Ready Player One. Great video, thanks Dave for the great information!
What a great video. I really appreciate your style of interviewing, you are very relaxed and reveal good character in your questioning methods. You should have more people like this on your show as his expertise bring a lot of insights and gave us all some ideas for the future. At one point you talked about augmented reality and it made me think of a future product that would be able to deliver both virtual reality and AR as some strategy games would be great for AR. Thanks again 😊
HTC Vive owner here - Out of all the people that i've had demo the setup have been blown away by it with zero sim-sickness. Totally worth every penny, this is the future.
Yeah, ive had my vive over a month now and have only had one person have sickness from it from about 25 I have showed it to. However they say that they get motion sick from a normal movie theater anyways so, not really the Vive's fault. Hows your experience been so far with yours? (:
Very interesting! I hope someone goes and does some proper research into how they managed to do that, because it is one of the biggest blockers for adoption (that and the price!)
***** Very positive. Burned through the free SteamVR titles within the first week. We've been hooked on Chamber 19, HoardZ, Hover Junkers and Out of Ammo (just released). I've also just been blown away by AltVR, virtual reality chat platform which has a lot of potential. Saw a guy with a full body cap suit on the other night, it was nuts!
Dave Nunez I believe it's accomplished with the optics. There are rings around your eyes that somehow give the affect of peripheral vision, i think this is how they limit sim-sickness - but i may be wrong. I hear you about the price. I custom built what i thought was a VR ready rig, with dual Nvidia 780's in SLI. Welp, turns out almost no VR platform supports SLI, so i was essentially running VR (successfully might i add) with one poor 780. I was forced to go out and buy a 980 to get rid of some frame drops during loading screens. Im broke but with a giant smile on my face :)
Been having a blast playing Skyrim VR on PSVR. :) Its probably the worst graphically version, but its the most fun for sure.
I think if VR becomes mainstream, it will be when VR systems are self-contained systems that you can buy for $200 or so. Sort of like what the Samsung Gear VR is, but with built-in mobile tech that is powerful enough to fully render the VR experience. If that happens, I will get into VR. But right now, the tech is still new and a lot of dust will have to settle before it becomes mainstream.
Rather minor correction, but 4k is 4 times the resolution of 1080p; it's doubled along each axis.
3840 x 2160 pixels is commonly referred as 4K, which is exactly twicw 1920 x 1080 pixels.
No, 4 x 1920 x 1080 is 3840 x 2160.
www.rtings.com/tv/reviews/by-resolution/4k-ultra-hd-uhd-vs-1080p-full-hd-tvs-and-upscaling-compared
So cool to have a vr expert for this show. It's true that some people really have nausea problem and is selling htc vive straight away after experiencing it.
Love the guest list you have! Awesome as always!
Cheers :)
That operation wolf shirt is wickedness!
That's the first thing I told Dave when he came over! :)
This video was awesome! The knowledge of your guest was amazing and I learned a lot more on VR watching this video than with everything else that I watched before! Great video and keep up the good work!
That was a great interview, plus just ordered a mini gameboy from rabbitengneering for my desk.
I'm a Boeing pilot! Never really thought about my sim training as VR haha
I would have cared more if I was a kid but as a 25 year old I'm fine with my consoles. The PC required to get the best experience is something I could never afford. Not currently anyway.
For those who still wonder what I mean. As a kid you always want the newest and "coolest" thing but now I'm more interested in how "fun" a game is. No more gimmicks.
I feel ya on that, and I was mostly like that until I tried a friend's VR headset. Controllers and KB/M will be here to stay but you know that fun feeling of bewilderment and being mindblown by video games the first few times you played something? Being truly impressed because it was something new and well done? That's what I got playing with the DK2 at the time, haven't felt like that playing a game since I was a kid.
Oh, and going through the Kokiri Forest in first person was pretty awesome.
you can make a gaming rig for same if not a little cheaper then console. newest generation of consoles anyways. I understand what you saying though
You are fine with your consoles because you dont have money hahahah
+PlaystationboxU master race 3/10 bait
try better next time
Really interesting video. What a great guest to have on! Thank you so much.
Dave needs to be on a hidden gems video for flight simulators or racing games or something. This guy is a genius, very interesting to listen to and it's really nice to get a different perspective than that of the retro gamers that you generally have on like Reggie, Kinsey, John Riggs or John Hancock.
Dave, operation wolf was the first ever game I purchased when I was younger for like £16. love your t-shirt!
Super awesome video man! A big big big thank you for you both! More videos like this in the future
could not stop looking at those big KRK speakers
I like those speakers a lot. Well worth the money!
Dave is very interesting. I like going deep into subjects and video games are a passion. Would love to see him more often on the show !
MJ, I loved this video. Please host more industry experts who can give us an insider glimpse on gaming!
About twenty five years ago I had a go on a VR red baron flying game. It was a huge sit down cabinet with a full headset and TV so everyone could watch what you was experiencing. It was quite expensive to play but I loved the experience, I got to cocky and crashed into one of the hangers but this was after I had shot all the enemy down. I also had some goggles for my PlayStation 2 and played Wipeout XL, Alien Trilogy, Doom etc even watched DVDS using the goggles. Was great fun but they were a bit uncomfortable to wear for long periods.
best mjr I've seen in a while. nice job
I was watching this documentary called Futurama and they were in a virtual reality. They could shoot lasers out of their fingers and EVERYTHING! Man, I can not WAIT for 31st century!
There's a game called Second Life that uses vr technology with the Oculus. But you need peripherals to interact with the virtual world, like a Wiimote or glove.
I'd love to get one for first person shooters not so much for games that simulate what I'm doing, but for making it in a first person shooter where I can see more out the sides of where I am looking rather then just in front.
Great video as always, MJ!
Goddamn I couldn't figure out where I had heard the dude's voice from before and it was driving me crazy. Then he mentioned it was rabbit engineering...I love his channel he is fantastic at breaking things down into simple terms
Probably the best Mjr video in a while , very informative .
First PhD on the show?
I think Anna @CircuitsAndCoffee also has a PhD...
I hope to see more with Dr. Dave in the future, perhaps even discussing Augmented Reality and maybe a follow up video after E3 when we know perhaps more about Sony's Morpheus plans and his reactions and thoughts on the potential for the system.
well this guy is super interesting and very knowledgeable. Thanks for bringing him out for an interview. Super exciting video
Dave's voice is sooooo soothing
I first remember seeing a proper VR headset in the 80s. They were bigger bulkier versions of the Oculus Rift with untextured polygons graphics. It was still in development them days and not commercial at that time.
The thing with VR ATM is it works _very_ well *but* games need to be designed for it, the basic mechanics behind monitor games often don't work well in VR (not always but more often than not) however people are coming up with new and interesting ways to make game genres work, like Battle Dome, its a great take on the FPS genre that works really well. I also think that while the seated VR experience is cool having a room scale experience really takes it to the next level, when your body is interacting with the virtual world it really sells it to your brain.
Its still early days and there is a lot of room for improvement but as long as you get into it without preconceptions of playing your favourite monitor game in VR and having it be even better but rather look for new experiences built for VR first, its one hell of a trip. IMO the best way of looking at VR is as another platform for games to be played on, separate to a monitor, there are games that work better on a monitor and games that work better in VR.
Also 2 x 1080p != 4K, 4 x 1080p = 4K, sorry that was bugging me ;)
I was already unsold on VR, but this video helped me confirm that VR is not for me. It seems to still be a gimmick since FPS games that require you to run/walk can't immerse you as much as a car/flight simulator can. Also, I personally get motion sickness very easily. I can only read what's on my iPhone for 5 seconds in a car before I start getting nauseas. Anyway, great and very informative video about the fad which is VR.
I know it's been a year or so since your comment, but I heavily advise you to give it another look. Some of the new systems like Freedom Locomotion VR really do a great job of combating motion sickness, and shooters like Pavlov have found some great success
shiningwizard327 dude your missing out lol I have so much fun with my psvr.
i hope you find a reason to keep bringing Dave back to your show.
VR , framerate drops on hypermodern consoles and prices above 80$ (in europe) are the reasons I'm more and more into indie PC games like factorio, prison architect, but also evergreens like dota2 and my retro consoles
it comes down to the content. I havent seen anything in VR that's really amazing yet. So far, i've seen things that are like tech demos, experiments or simple little experiences.
2 X 1080p is not 4K. 4 x 1080p is 4K as its squared. To produce a 1080p screen for each eye you would need less than 4K. This bugged me because he said it over and over again. Honest mistake tho.
Yes, my arithmetic is terrible :-) but there is no display driver that handles anything between 1080 and 4K in the mainstream, so companies do the jump to 4K.
+Dave Nunez (Rabbit Engineering) hey we're all human. thanks for all the info!:)
Thank you! I was hopping I wasn't the only one being bugged by that!
3840 x 2160 pixels is commonly referred as 4K, which is exactly twice 1920 x 1080 resolution, so the video is correct in terms of what the industry calls 4K.
Jump to 4k on consumer sets has to do with manufacturing of panels not the tech or drivers Its far cheaper for them to make a big screen 4k tv using multiple older and smaller 1080p panels. Why they never went 1440 or anything on tvs. Also why first 4k screens were 60+ in, they were using up old 1080 panels
Dat Samus shirt! So cool, oh and the video was cool as well. Dave totally knows his business.
Dave seems like such a good guy I'd love to be able to pick that guys brain I feel like I would learn so much
loved this and learning to click like on youtube as well. Great work the both of you
Great video. Dave was fascinating, would love to see more from him.
Wow. Great video with great information. Get this guy on more often. Reminds me of my physics professor. Both cool dudes
More videos like this! I like these scholarly discussions. I learned things. \m/
Great vidio guys. I had to watch twice because I have most of those games and books in the background!! I wasn't paying attention the first time I watched. lol. Fantastic info thanks!!
This is your best video yet! Great, informative discussion!
Excellent guest! This was a thoroughly enjoyable video.
Very informative video! Well done, Thanks Jesus!
Wow awesome video guys, I didn't know about the nitty gritty of VR. I think I am gonna watch Lawnmower Man on Laserdisc now LOL
Well that was very interesting... I didn't realize optics was the most expensive component for HMDs. I picked up an HTC Vive, no one has really complained about sim sickness out of the 15 or 20 people I've demoed it to.
Testing the Occulus Rift Dev kit 2 was one of the craziest experiences in my whole life. I have to own a VR tech device for myself.
What a great video! Thank you!
The HTC Vive is FUCKING AMAZING. I've been playing video games since the Atari 2600 and, having played VR games, I'm having a very hard time going back to flat screen games. The "old" games are still great, and current flat screen games have a lot to offer, but VR is the future. It's finally here this time and it's incredible. It's fairly expensive at the moment (but if you're a hardcore PC gamer with a high end video card, that's half the battle), but prices will be dropping very quickly over the next few years. I suspect it won't be long until VR gear is as popular as mobile phones are today.
From one "mature" gamer to another, you owe it to yourself to try it out. In fact, I'm in the Seattle area and would happily give you a demo, Metal Jesus. You truly will not believe your senses.
You gotta have this guy on more often. This is a great vid and dude knows what hes talking about without sounding like a rambling nerd. 🤘
Operation Wolf!
the funny thing is we could all be living in an extreme version of VR and we wouldn't even know. Yeah I know the Matrix and various other sci fi films have touched upon this but it's good food for thought
what an educated dude, great stuff MJ. I would love to test VR I only heard great thinks about it
Back in the mid 90's a friend and I built a VR headset and stereoscopic software for our degree thesis. When we finished our degrees we couldn't sell our system to anyone. In the end we had to give it away to another university for research purposes.
This was super interesting. Thanks for sharing
The fact of the matter is that we essentially already have "virtual" reality in video games. We are able to "escape" and achieve what we attempt to achieve with virtual reality hardware. When I'm gaming,I'm totally oblivious to my surroundings. That's what I call "the poor man's vr".
Very interesting video Metal Jesus! You really have some good content that thinks outside of the box. Thank you for everything!
Google Cardboard is something I wish more people (or at least people where I live) would start getting into. It feels so underrated despite it being Virtual Reality for less than a tin of pringles...ok so yeah you need a smartphone to use it but practically everyone has a smartphone so that's not really a big issue
Everyone doesn't have a smartphone dying enough with a good enough screen to use it decently...
DAVID i got cardboard working with my 5th gen ipod touch and quite a lot of people seem to own an iphone which has practically the same specs
+Ben Knight (KnightVision) It may be working but it isn't optimized. Also, market statistics show that the vast majority of people using smart phones in America are using low to midrange android devices.
im into RC FPV quads. and the immersive thing is pretty cool how they have made it work using goggles.. but its different than a video game and requires no process power.. just good optics and a good camera since you are flying through a live camera :D and the prices ranges from 60.00 for a DIY which works great to 500.00 or so for top of the line fatsharks that are compact all in one units.. no bulky cables, or receivers like on the DIY kits. but yeah i went with the 60.00 option, maybe when the tech gets cheaper ill go withe fatsharks etc...
I havn't tried any VR but my take on it is it's early and i'll wait till it's been optimized a bit. Havn't seen many games that are mind blowing and yea the price doesn't help. Great job guys. :D
wow props for throwing in a burnout clip :) I was actually kind of hoping Dave had tried some of the differing techs out there and was going to sound off on the pro's and con's so kind of bummed for that, but it is tough to get a taste of them all without serious investment...
and i see a stack of xbox 360 games behind ya'll. prepping for a new hidden gems video or something? :)
