I LOVE the Butthole Surfers! I first was introduced to their music in 1991 by one of my Army buddies. They're fellow Texans, and their music is what happens when you take a lot of LSD, and just pick up your instruments and hit [Record]. Very fun, and weird, band to just trip out on LoL! *Edit* They can't really be categorized either. They are their own thing. You can pick out elements of genres, but whatever it is, there's no rules to it. Don't try to take any meaning from their songs either. It's all random LSD lyrics that came from an acid trip. Take "John E. Smoke" for example. Listen to that while reading the lyrics, and it really is an acid trip formatted as though the words came out of the Bible. It's hilarious!
In the 80's the Butthole Surfers were the single most psychedelic bands around, with crazy video displays, vocals run through weird effects, and crazy onstage antics by performers who might have even been more high than the audience. Here's a link to a video of them on the last day of the first Lollapalooza tour, in Enumclaw, Wa (about an hour from Seattle) which might be one of the best representations (despite being outdoors without their crazy videos) of who this band was in that moment. They were completely insane. ua-cam.com/video/MdUcWRbfODI/v-deo.html Another great video from that day is Siouxie & The Banshees opening their set with The Last Beat Of My Heart.
If you've ever listened to Ministry, you'll recognize a similarity on this song between the two. In fact I think, both main singers collaborated on several songs
I saw these guys as a headliner and The Stone Temple Pilots opened. Was definitely a pro Butthole crowd. The teeny boppers there for pilots were shocked for sure. I was there surfing!!!
I’ve been a fan of this band since 1983. Their really old stuff is freaking out of this world. Like nothing you can describe. Just a mind trip check out a song called Sweat Loaf and Johnny Smoke. Pepper was their first radio friendly song. Their 80s music is their bread and butter
Gibby Hayes (lead singer) had a couple side projects. One was called Gibby Hayes and His Problem, an instrumental album under the band name The JackOfficers, and a band that had actor Johnny Depp on bass and was the band that was playing the night River Phoenix died. That band was called P and did a hilarious cover of ABBA's "Dancing Queen". BTW, in the official video for "Pepper" you will see Eric Estrada from TV's "Chips".
There’s 3 major eras of Butthole Surfers. 1) terrifying soundtrack to terrifying visual show 2) kick ass soundtrack to terrifying visual show and finally 3) weirdly dope electronic soundtrack to terrifying visual show. The album that Pepper was on is kind of the transition between eras 2 & 3. Damn near anything off of The Weird Revolution (which capped that era) you would find very dope. Particularly Get Down, They Came In, or Intelligent Guy. The first 2 periods are a little tougher on the casual listener. Ballad of Naked Man and The Hurdy Gurdy Man are probably the kinds of songs that stand out from there. Once you get back to Something or The Shah Sleeps In Lee Harvey Oswald’s Grave you’re basically looking for islands of structure in a sea of chaos. Awesome band. Probably won’t get much more out of them though. Gibby’s off writing YA books now. Yes that’s real. He did a guest spot on a RevCo record a while back but that’s about it since Humpty Dumpty LSD which was basically an archived album in the first place.
Butthole Surfers started in the punk scene, but they were always different. The punk scene was probably the only people open enough to give them a chance because their music was so weird and experimental. A lot of it is just plain weird. A really cool song of thiers that isn't as well known is called Boiled Dove
I love your channel! Ever since I saw you react to ‘Don’t fear the reaper,’ I was like I have to subscribe. A song you would like is “A song for you” by Donny Hathaway. Highly recommend👍
This is a relatively normal track for these giants of noise rock to this day listening to locust abortion technician for the first time is one of the most memorable and astounding musical experiences of my life
You listened to two of their most coherent songs, this and Pepper, their only song that sniffed the charts. Believe me, they weren't about that at all. This band could not be classified. Maybe they were part punk, acid rock, weirdly experimental like Zappa and The Mothers, who the hell knows. They were just themselves, deconstructing music and creating a sound that nobody did before and never will. I saw them live, though I was so blasted I barely remember it lol, but man they just kept you into it with their great musicianship and showmanship. Damn I had fun! One of the most indescribable and bomass bands of all time.
They were like shining diamond in the pile of dirt, behind being psychotic acid punks in the 80s there was actual brilliance to their art. Also Gibby was a crazy mofo.
The Butthole Surfers evolved their sound like you wouldn't believe. Start with Suicide from their first album (known as the Pee-Pee the Sailor album for hard core punk, them this for more alt punk, then Pepper which you said was like Beck, and end with Shame of Life which is more trip-hop.
Been following butthole surfers since the late 80s..there is no definite description for them.. I've heard country outlaw/Texas insanity/ industrial/ punk. Naw, the butthole surfers are just the butthole surfers ...chaos in music and lyrics. And I love them for that
I started seeing the Butthole Surfers in 1987 and was fortunate to see them about 20 times. I also got to hang out, party with them, and interview them a couple times. Paul Leary, the guitarist, is shamefully overlooked. There's no one like him. Or like Gibby. Or like Jeff, King, and Teresa. I dare you to Play Cherub by the Butthole Surfers.
Check out the song Venus or Shame Of Life from their last album Weird Revolution. It is much more of a grove based sound and almost borders on a "trip hop" type sound or They Came In from the same album or I had a Dream Last Night from Romeo and Juliet soundtrack
You haven't listened to Butthole Surfers till you hit "Locust Abortion Technicians" (the whole album) - Pepper and Who Was in The Room are good for beginners... Is there any chance you could do a reaction of another greatly underrated post punk band? Chrome (those from San Francisco linked to Ralph Records aka The Residents)...I can't find a single reaction about them.
This is the turning point in the discography, the earlier stuff is pure uncut Bad Acid Trip Psychedelia with a live show intended to cause as much harm to the audience as possible (nonstop fog machines, strobes and two projectors playing different things at the same time, like episodes of Charlie's Angels on top of sex change operation footage). If you wanna see them in their prime, check out a live version of Cherub or my favorite - Whirling Hall of Knives.
If you like punk rock, man, Math the Band has got some great stuff for you. Punk rock with a bit a retro arcade music sound. “Positive Stress” and “January 2008” stand out as good first listens. I have no idea if you’ll like it or not, but it’s unique and really upbeat.
Classic Butthole Surfers song! I listen to a little bit of everything but have always leaned towards metal and back when this song came out, I was confused by the whole CD because it was all over the place! And then I did some acid and listen to it and it made total sense! Lol! Not saying you have to to be able to enjoy the music, just saying definitely explains a lot! Glad you enjoyed this song, like I said it’s a classic and if you enjoyed it, which I believe you did, you should totally just listen to the entire CD because it very much so worth it. And this is only your third video that I’ve seen as I just found your channel but if you haven’t, I would love to see a reaction to this video by a band called, “Jinjer”!! I absolutely promise you it is unbelievable!🤘🤘 ua-cam.com/video/SQNtGoM3FVU/v-deo.html
Pepper was kind of they're radio acceptable hit. Many felt a sell out. Don't expect that with the rest of their music. ,👊🏻🤟🏻🎶🖤 I also don't press skip when Pepper comes on so...🤷🏻
One of the sickest guitar riffs of all time
Crunchiest of crunch
Absolutely.
John Paul Jones of Led Zeppelin was the producer on this album. Love the surfers, been a fan since '86, seen them live 3 times
And they got him so drunk, so often, that he quit drinking after.

Heck yeah this is a good intro to them! Loved that they are fellow Texans as well!
Many amazing experiences at their shows...on acid :)
Check out their singer guesting on Ministry's 'Jesus Built My Hot Rod '
This!
Jesus Built My Hotrod was fucking EPIC. I drag race my 78 Impala on the strip while listening to that song.
Time for Monster Magnet, Big Black, Prong, and The Accused. LOL
EDIT: Cant forget Ministry and old NIN.
Also its not Peppers its PEPPER.
wow a reaction to Butthole Surfers, totally cool

One crazy ass band. Great live too.
If you've ever listened to Ministry, you'll recognize a similarity on this song between the two. In fact I think, both main singers collaborated on several songs
Jesus Built My Hotrod
On the same CD as "Who Was in My Room Last Night?" is a song called "Some Dispute Over Tshirt Sales."
It's Gibby doing an homage to "Jesus Built My Hotrod." Gibby did vocals on "Jesus Built My Hotrod."
Yep I remember thinking this sounds just like ministry but both are good
Did this band ever make radio stations I can’t remember if they did or not?
One of the best videos ever. A speeding ticket is in your future if you play this one in the car lol.
TRUE
I saw these guys as a headliner and The Stone Temple Pilots opened. Was definitely a pro Butthole crowd. The teeny boppers there for pilots were shocked for sure. I was there surfing!!!
Great song, I used to play this on Guitar Hero.😂😂😂😂👍🤘🏻🔥🎧
You gotta check out their song, “Human Cannonball” sometime. It’s more of a punk song, and is probably the greatest BHS song EVER!!!!!!
I got that album, still a classic to this day
I’ve been a fan of this band since 1983. Their really old stuff is freaking out of this world. Like nothing you can describe. Just a mind trip check out a song called Sweat Loaf and Johnny Smoke. Pepper was their first radio friendly song. Their 80s music is their bread and butter

the jackofficers - digital dump album is awesome, as for Gibby Haynes and his problem i love the track Pauls not home LOL

The biggest influence on so many bands I saw live great concert you should play front 242
Hell yes! Butthole Surfers! This is a classic 😂🤘
Wow I forgot about this album! This song effin rocks baby!
I love your channel! Ever since I saw you react to ‘Don’t fear the reaper,’ I was like I have to subscribe. A song you would like is “A song for you” by Donny Hathaway. Highly recommend👍
This is a relatively normal track for these giants of noise rock to this day listening to locust abortion technician for the first time is one of the most memorable and astounding musical experiences of my life
if you like this kinda driving acid rock freakout stuff, go for "dust devil" from the same record.
Love this song and album
Pepper was their one song that broke into the mainstream. in their early days they were famous (infamous?) for having chaotic live shows.
Never listened to during that time. I appreciate your open-minded opinion. Keep up good work. Awesome reaction brother.
Only band I ever climbed up the side of a parking deck to see live…
You listened to two of their most coherent songs, this and Pepper, their only song that sniffed the charts. Believe me, they weren't about that at all. This band could not be classified. Love it The A
the Annoying song is great too.

Dude u have to watch the video it's a acid trip. this song is like Claypool meets Sabbath, great toon.
Check out Lady Sniff by these guys. Bet you’ll laugh.
53 yr old here and good to know we weren't that crazy... meatbeat manifesto, front line assembly, front 242, etc....
end of video... lots of butthole surfers songs out there. find top watches.
Sea Ferring is a great song - and their cover of American Woman is perhaps the greatest cover song of all time.
I started seeing the Butthole Surfers in 1987 and was fortunate to see them about 20 times. I also got to hang out, party with them, and interview them a couple times. ...great review...the Surfers started in the early 80's...!
Sweet cut that reminds me to pull back out some of my B Surfers albums
They are in my mind the pink floyd of punk rock...
One of my favorite albums. 👍🏼
You should check out "Cough Syrup" off the same album as Pepper. It's my fav. Surfers song
At first they appear as crazy nonsense, then you realise they are the probably tge best band in the world! Prepared for a wild journey.
This is so true, never realized that until i listened to their earlier indie stuff. They were fcking brilliant.
Buttholes came out of hardcore punk, but took a very psycedelic influence and were one of the big bands that became alternative rock
I have never heard this, I dig it! Was that supposed to be Peter Pan in the beginning??
A freaking classic !!! Thank you !!!!!!!!
Perry, from the album Rembrandt Pussyhorse. its an earlier album, metered, Lsd insanity. great keyboards and drums
on an off note there is a newer punk band called the Idles. well worth checking out!!
You can tell Flea came in to record the base lines for this one
Pepper with another band would have made them break up, they were definitely a Punk based acid fueled band
Maybe try “ Bong Song” by the Buttholes.
Peppers was hecka commersh all thjngs considered.
Man I love this song
Listen to pioughd. You're welcome.
Requests: Human Cannonball, 2 Parder, Blindman, and P.S.Y.. Again, you're welcome...

They call them selves New Age Phychodelic Surf Punk. Try Dust Devil from the same album.
gotta go back a bit for their best stuff, they did get a bit Beckish in the 90s
Great band. Saw them live in 91. If you want to check out other crazy music try Trumans Water or God Is My Co-Pilot.
Want some Surfers that's completely different than "Pepper" or this song? Check out "Cherub."
Yes !! Yes!! Yes!! it's the Butthole Surfers!! ...."Beavis and Butthead"
Been listening to and tripping to the Buttholes since the late 80s, Hairway to steven and Locust abortion technician are absolute classic albums
Crusty demons 8th dimension brought me here
If you like punk rock, man, Math the Band has got some great stuff for you. Punk rock with a bit a retro arcade music sound. “Positive Stress” and “January 2008” stand out as good first listens. I have no idea if you’ll like it or not, but it’s unique and really upbeat.
They got 80s punk roots big time - check out there song “cannon ball”
Never try to put your finger on the Surfers. they are an enigma.
Ulcer Breakout is another great track that exemplifies their punk influences.
I can't help but crack up every time I say their band name. lol.
Check out Gary Floyd from the album psychic, powerless, another man's sac
Let's go very old school Tennessee Ernie Ford "18 tons" still relevant!
This song was in an ad for Super Nintendo.
Great Jam! You get it! Good ear!!!
One of the best bands ever
Fugazi -Waiting Room
Some obscure ass music, but damn good!
I love this song
Will y'all be doing your Sunday night show tonight?
Check out Madman, God or Jesus Rode a Harley from Ugly Kid Joe.👍🔥🤘🏻🎧
Every album is a different style.
Really experimental songs
Like carefull with that axe euqene by pink flyod

Alt punk industrial ? Check out Jesus built my hotrod by Ministry
Intro is one of those forever ascending sound trick. I m f l y I n g
Pepper is the best song!!! Gotta check that one out
In the official video flea is the bartender 😊

Heck yeah! Awesome reminds me of Rob zombie
GREAT ALBUM/ 10/10
This song also has elements that remind me of Ministry and revolting cocks
You should check out the official video to this, hilarious
React to Butthole Surfers weirder stuff. Like I saw an x-Ray of a girl passing gas
Psychedelic rock
Where BH Surfers go with their music is, honestly, less interesting than where they come from. The early stuff is the best.
one of the best intros
I thought of this as Grunge.
luv this mate
I wouldn't call this punk. This is industrial.
Pepper was kind of they're radio acceptable hit. Many felt a sell out. Don't expect that with the rest of their music. ,👊🏻🤟🏻🎶🖤 I also don't press skip when Pepper comes on so...🤷🏻
Dust devil is awesome...
The video to this song is sick
