Full highlights from the qualifying stages of the rhythmic gymnastics group all-around event taking place at Wembley Arena as part of the London 2012 Olympic Games (10 August).
Since its integration into the Games in 1984 in Los Angeles, rhythmic gymnastics has always been a part of the Olympic programme. In its inaugural year, it was Canada's Lori Fung who won the gold medal.
Until 1992 in Barcelona, only one individual event was on the programme. A second, team event was added to the programme in 1996 in Atlanta.

I cannot imagine how hard this is to practice. Like everything is on time; the landing of the hoops, the throwing of the ribbons, and the synchronized dancing. Its just so amazing. Total respect for these women. 👍

Most teams live together and practice for 10 hrs a day during the last few weeks leading up to the Olympics. That is the only way to become the best, most synchronized team and to bring home the desired medals.
to people questioning whether rhythmic gym is a sport, I can tell you as someone who used to learn gymnastics, it's probably one of the hardest sports. You need to be able to combine acrobatic, gymnastic and dance skills together plus manoeuvre the ball/ribbon/clubs/hoops with various parts of your body.
+prisxer25 Most of them are Americans(no offense, if you are and thanks for appreciating this sport ) and it is clear they won't like it, you just have to see that kind of artistic gymnastics they like.

One of my favorite things to watch, the way the people move in and out of each other and how they are able to coordinate and pinpoint the exact spot to throw hoops and ribbons and also using the hoops and ribbons themselves to throw back to team mates is unbelievable.

At 15:53 am I the only one that noticed the one girl who accidentally threw the ribbon not to the one who was supposed to get it, and she had to quick go throw it again and then pick up her hoop 🤣👍😅😅

All of the participants in rhythmic gymnastic are really gorgeous. All their moves are really amazing. It doesn’t look easy, catching the rope while you are exchanging places. Congrats to all the participants!

Not just saying this Bc I’m Greek haha but the unison of the Greek team was breathtaking. Such synchronicity, combined w some very difficult+unique moves…. Just amazing. Really thought their score would be higher.
(I should note- I know nothing about this sport haha so I’m sure I’m missing mistakes, def not using proper terminology & no clue how the scoring actually works haha ☺️✌️)

Greeks were a lot better in technique than GB but GB has crowd with them and then the home ground made the difference. There was no difficulty or technique wise unique in GB's performance.

The girl is an alternate incase of something happening with any of the other girls

+luhole Every sport has an alternate. Even common sports like soccer and basketball have "benches". It's basically the same thing.
Maggy Blue Ah right, thanks Maggie. Being a basketball player, that makes more sense to me. But even if you're a bench player in basketball, at least you usually get SOME time on the court. Anyway, thanks for explaining everyone!
