    4:55 - thanks for the tip, you'd think that Zwift would EXPLAIN that in the FTP test description !

    Bro i’ve watched a bunch of videos explaining this but you were the first to tell me that I need to have my phone with the Companion app open to turn that erg off or on so thanks for explaining that

    Thanks for another helpful video. I think I get it, but ... I just did the FTP Test (Lite) twice on my Wahoo Kickr Core, and it wasn't what I expected at all ....
    Test 1, the trainer was set to Erg mode (I didn't even notice the little "Erg mode on" button), and during the FTP test I just ran out of gears - I was in my hardest gear, spinning at 130 rpm, and couldn't meet the target Watts. I was nowhere near maxed out, just couldn't spin any faster! And had no gears left!
    Test 2, I unclicked Erg mode, and I "sort of" felt like Zwift was adjusting the difficulty level, except that, again, I eventually couldn't reach the target Watts at a cadence of 90 rpm. For some reason, I just expected Zwift to increase resistance so that, at my chosen cadence (90 rpm), I'd have to pedal harder to reach the target Watts. Instead, staying at 90rpm, I just wasn't at the target Wattage.
    For some reason, I was expecting Zwift to almost simulate a climb, so that as my target Watts increased, the resistance would increase, as if I was going up an increasingly steeper hill. But that wasn't what it felt like at all.

      I’ve had a similar experience, I bought a Tacx Neo trainer with ERG mode and literally couldn’t figure it out, it just didn’t seem to behave as I expected and didn’t maintain the target power. I don’t really understand conceptually how it works but I expected it to work as you described and it just doesn’t does it. I ended up returning the trainer for refund and have stuck with my “dumb” trainer and changing gears. Much easier and more control

    I did the 1h test a few weeks ago, thinking it would be better than the 20min test - it just confirmed what i allready knew, bad form hahah

    awesome...thanks for the tips..Tried my ftp test, but I stopped because I was spinning out due to low resistance. Now I know how to address that issue

      He says in the video that erg mode provides you a given resistance regardless of your cadence if your spinning out your trainer is broken

    ...
    the app asked me to turn it on
    my question is
    suppose that I can control my Outputs power does it effect the result?? if I don't switch the erg mode?

    Can you create a video with a non erg trainer? The best way to do an FTP and switching gears.

    I have seen your video on modes but I still find the various terminology confusing. IMO this is caused by the different terms being used by different Trainer makers and Cycling apps for the same thing. Are SIM mode, Resistence mode and Level mode all the same thing? In apps that have virtual rides like Rouvy and Zwift should those rides be ridden in SIM/Resist/Level mode? If I ride a virtual ride in SIM/Resist/Level mode should I be shifting? If I do the a Ramp test in any app should I be in ERG mode and never shift? I have watch 20 -30 videos on these subjects and almost all of them fail to describe when to used SIM/Resist/Level mode and whether to shift and how much to shift in that mode, all anyone seems to want to talk about is ERG mode. It is very unclear to me when or if the app is setting the mode, do any of the apps ( Swift, STSM, Rouvy, ...) set the mode when you pair a controllable trainer ( I have a Tacx Neo 2t) and choose a specific ride or workout?

      I made a video on this many years ago when I was just starting this channel. Not sure if that came up in the search results but here it is: ua-cam.com/video/qBlMYjlugqk/v-deo.html

    Hi Ali, how do I do a garmin connect training plan using resistance mode? It goes directly to erg mode, even when I change it to resistance.

    Question: It's about "Freeride" in general, not specific to FTP testing. I paired my smart trainer as controllable. If I choose a custom workout, and in that workout, I have "Use ERG mode", and I also have a freeride section (Say 5 minute best effort). What happens if I hit a climb in the route in the world I'm riding? Does Zwift still disable the resistance entirely and I should rely on the incline, like in an FTP test, or am I subject to the gradient? In other words, using ERG mode, in a custom workout, that has a freeride section. When I hit that freeride section, does Zwift disable ERG entirely like in an FTP test? Or would Zwift make me subject to the gradient of the route I'm on?

      When you are in ERG mode and your workout has a free ride section, it will switch to level mode. You will not feel the terrain and Zwift will flatten out the course for you. You can adjust resistance by hitting the arrow up or down in the companion app or by switching gears.

    hi.. do you have idea why my erg mode didn't off auto on 20min block? I'm using wahoo kickr. or is it supposed need to manually off?

  • @WojciechLisiak

    I'm sorry but I don't fully understand. What will be the difference in the FTP test and its result if a 20-minute block is performed with ERG Mode turned on and off?

    • @SmartBikeTrainers
      @SmartBikeTrainers  10 місяців тому

      Basically don’t use erg mode when doing a 20-min FTP test or any other type of ftp testing except the RAMP test.
      Use ERG mode If you are doing a RAMP ftp test.

    Can the FTP test be done with the erg mode off?

    • @SmartBikeTrainers
      @SmartBikeTrainers  2 роки тому +1

      Erg will turn off when you get into the ftp section if you are doing the longer ftp test. But you can also just turn off erg mode all together if you want. You should be able to turn it off using the companion app.

    My Kickr Core not responding well with ERG mode on. Have you ever experienced this before? I did restarted the apps as well as the trainer but not helping.

    Just downloaded 7 day free trial Zwift today. There is no button to turn off ERG mode. Is this because its the free trial?

    doesn't Zwift turn off erg mode when on an FTP test? sorry you answered the question later in the video. Good job! :)

      Yes, for the period of the 20min test only - i.e. it is in free ride mode so you can do whatever power you can hold/want
