Two additional tips, 1. Use a straw to suck the air out of the bag before sealing 2. use metal rulers instead of plastic.

This will work for sealing a bag, but it won't keep your chips from going stale. Potato chips will go stale in a bag with air in it, so they are packed with pure nitrogen in the bag, not the air we breathe. Once the bag is open, you are better off folding down the bag as much as you can, to minimize the air inside, and clipping it with a chip clip or clothespin. Rice and noodles go stale very slowly, so this is a good method for preserving them.

If you press the rulers hard it will probably stay on the outside. Or you know you could just use a clip instead lol.

I have one if those seal a meal type sealers, made for (overly expensive) specialty, vacuum bags. I figured out if you don't vacuum the bag, just seal, give it a few seconds to cool, you can reseal bags, so your product stays fresh.

@CrazyRussianHacker If you cut the bags down, so that they're closer to the contents and remove as much air as possible things will stay fresher even longer and save more space. Thanks for the tip!

I don't know if Taras knows this but there are things called freezer bags that have seals on them. They're used to keep food fresh. You can buy them in bulk and they're not expensive. This thing with the rulers and cigarette lighter... Might be useful after a societal breakdown.

You can heat the hacksaw blade and when it is hot, fold the bag against hacksaw blade and it's done. That's how the chicharrones bags is done here in Mexico. You can use a saw blade.

Heat the knife until it's nearly as hot as the lighter, then cut the plastic bag. While you cut the bag, the heat from the knife has the function the same as the lighter flame in the video, and the bag will be closed tightly. This is more complex than the lighter and the ruler :) but it works

Maybe use a standing candle the next time maybe a little bit more stable? Just place the seal of the plastic package with the ruler in place near the flame to get a more stable hold and move they package along the flame?
Or you could just fold over the top of the bag a couple times and then close it with one of those black triangular metal binder clips that you can get at any office supply store.

or you can squeeze the air out, fold the bag right above the ships and then wrap the empty half down by the side, as if you were to fold a paper on the middle, this way when you put the bag down, the part of the bag where the ships are wil hold the open end sealed

you can use a paper towel, cover the area you want to reseal and then press it with a flat iron.
