Fun fact, warhammer 40k is where the term grimdark originated. The game's tagline was: "In the grim darkness of the far future, there is only war"
The tagline itself, originated from the opening blurb, of the 1st edition rulebook. The full text is better known as "the intro to the dark milenium" and slightly edited versions of it are still put at the begginig of many 40k books.
May: Daniel hasn't been reading one indie book a month.
Also Daniel: I will read at least 12 in the next months
Also December 2021 Daniel: I will read at least 12 in the next two weeks
It’s funny how both books with “gods” in the title are the two books in S tier. You could rename that to god tier
@@genghisgalahad8465 In here it stands for Small and Shadow, the two attributes of gods
Honestly though, every other book lately seems to have the words, "god", "blood", "king", or... You name some more.
I love how at 5:41 the two Red Rising sequels join to make "Olden Scorning Star"
refreshing to see a booktuber who doesn't need to read 15 books a month and still produce quality content :-)
I could not agree with this statement more. Quality, not quantity, every time.
I wanted to like the comment because its true, but it was at 69 likes so it was physically impossible and I was forced to comment. ^^
...and I was hoping to grow up at some point. Oh well...
@@achimwienzi381 it's at 84 now, like away! I also agree, there's a reason why the booktubers who read that many books mostly have under 10k subscribers. Variety and quality of content is king.
I dont even understand how someone can read that much and even remember what they read. I had a period where I was reading like 5-8 books a month for a few months and I gotta say I probably can barely recall the plot of some of them
Daniel: I didn't read as many books as usual.
Also Daniel: I read 10 other books that I jus didn't Review.
Me: I am still reading the same book, since the beginning of the year...
I feel you Jack. I've been working on the same two books for over a year...
@@literatimedium I started reading The Stand like six years ago (to be clear I haven’t been reading only that).
@@Dino23968 I really don't think anyone can top Tolkien when it comes to fantasy languages.
"Tight A…oopsie poopsie!"
Daniel's impromptu humor is just genius.
@@kriplaniankit774 So "Tight A" sounds like he's saying "tight ass" but what he meant was "definitely A tier" He laughed because he realized it sounded dirty.
Seeing Daniel's positive reaction to Syrup Village bodes well for some of the bigger One Piece arcs down the line. Can't wait for the Baratie and Arlong Park reviews!
Daniel: I like to split this year roughly in half...
Me: panicking, checks the date
I’d love to see you do a tier videos on different aspects of BoP: characters, chapters, the writing and self publishing phases, etc
Please do a good classic sci fi recommendations list! There are a lot of interesting lesser known works and you always talk about knowing them so it'd be great to hear them out xD
I'm glad you came around to Discworld.
Reading Sufficiently Advanced Magic now. It really needed an editor and I'm finding it really hard to get through in the beginning. But it's picking up the pace more in the second half.
I love how one piece is as high as it is given that you can equate it to one of the beginning chapters of the first book of a fantasy epic lol. Can’t wait to see his reactions going forward
This seems a good place to say thank to you and this channel because I started reading again last year. It took me the hole last year to read LotR, but this year in 5 months I have read Mistborn era 1-2, Warbreaker, Arcanum and Stormlight, so thank you!
If you like Syrup Village that much you are gonna be hyped af later on
One Piece fans fear anyone picking it up fresh because we've all had so many people try it and give up early for one reason or another. Most commonly art, humor, 'annoying'. So I think a lot of people just take this to mean the early arcs are all annoying, bad art and not funny, so we try to excuse it by saying, IT GETS BETTER. The series was always good. It just becomes phenomenal.
I think it also stems from the hesitancy people have of picking up (too long, maybe it drags? Etc) and the negative preconceptions they may also have (kids story, overhyped etc), so fans try to ease people in fear that they'll be disappointed, like overcompensating. But tbh we really don't need to do that if you think about it. I was one of those people with negative preconceptions of the series, spent my whole life thinking it was stupid (lol) but I picked it up on a whim and I was HOOKED from the first 3 volumes, intrigued enough to continue. So for one piece all you really need to do is start, then the story hooks the reader right away, it's getting over that initial hump where most people need encouragement (ie. That live show where Daniel was very adamant he wouldn't read one piece... And then fans convinced him too 😅)
I've been reading OP from the beginning, but for me it only got worse with age. What I enjoyed as a kid I no longer find as attractive.
Syrup arc which is one of the worst arcs in one piece is B tier according to him, this should tell he will be blown away by the future arcs and the series as a whole.
Here's my problem Daniel... I know I am not the most well read sci-fi/fantasy fan out there. I love fantasy, but I just don't have the time to read that I once did. BUT NOW YOU MAKE ME WANT TO READ MORE. Dangit! My "books to read list" grew exponentially now that I watch your videos. Thanks a lot.
You comparing Pratchett to monty python has just shot his works to the top of my tbr, i need that sort of comedy in my life
Reminder you Don't have to read all his books in order. There are sub series within. First 2 books' style are different from many of the rest
Douglas Adams and Monty Python are both good comparisons for Pratchett's work imo. While there's a lot of Monty Python wit there's also a lot of humor that comes from eventually knowing the characters for so long.
If you're on the fence about starting a series I hiiiiighly recommend Good Omens which was cowritten with Neil(sp) Gaiman
@@dillon1037 Do you have any series/book recs for Pratchett after Good Omens?
@@honorisalive Discworld for sure. I'd go with Guards! Guards! To start but Mort is another good entry point and The Colour of Magic is the first published. I'd look at those three and pick whichever sounds most interesting.
So happy to hear you've jumped onto that One Piece train! I grew up with it, and it has been one of my favourite manga - can't wait for your elaboration once you've read more!
BTW, a lot of Japanese manga publishes a new chapter in some weekly periodicals (such as JUMP); One Piece has been doing so - releasing a new chapter every week since 1997. It's still ongoing 'til this day... so you've got some catching up to do, Daniel! :)
Sir TP killing it again. Gotta love that man. I re-read Mort last month and had a blast.
Didnt expect manga on here but respect 🙏🏼
Every time I watch your videos it makes me want to go read, and that’s a special thing.
After I finish this video, of course.
I'm so bloody glad you liked Xenos mate!! The 40k universe has such a diverse range of novels ranging from derivative sci fi to demonic warp hell battles haha
I wish you good luck for the next 2 months because I have to work on my thesis, but when i ll have time to relax i ll watch your videos. :)
Daniel, if you are looking for some indie books to read (gotta get that 12 in the next year!), I've been getting into them myself and have a few recommendations.
1) Read more Cradle - I didn't love the series until book three, but now it's one of my favourites
2) The Primaterre series by S.A. Tholin - I'm only two books into the series, but am loving every second (so much though that I will finish reading the series before I tackle Girl and the Mountain, and I really enjoy Mark Lawrence books)
3) Shadow of a Dead God by Patrick Samphire - It's got a down on his luck Dresden-ish wizard protagonist (without the morals) in a fantasy setting. Great, fun read.
4) The Travelers Gate or Elder Empire series by Will Wight - Not as great as Cradle, but pretty solid. I recommend Elder empire over Travelers Gate, even though I did not love the alternating viewpoints/sides in the conflict gimmick of the books.
Love your channel!
Great list! Gave me a bunch of stories to catch up on.
Pawn’s Gambit and Sufficiently Advanced Magic are on my list now, and I just downloaded Shadow of the Gods on Audible. Sad to hear that Amber wasn’t your bag. Thanks for the reviews, man!
If you're looking for indie reads, I would highly recommend Terry Mixon's Empire of Bones space opera series. And for fantasy, T Kingfisher writes for big publishers, but also does self-published. I'm planning on reading The Wizard's Guide to Defensive Baking soon, just for the title.
I seriously recommend the Arcane Ascension (Sufficiently Advanced Magic) in its audiobook form. I love the books on their own as well, but I feel that Andrew Rowe's style lends itself particularly well for audiobook narration, and Nick Podehl's narration is beyond incredible!
Could you possibly give Moon Chosen by P.C. Cast a look? I'm currently on book 3 and absolutely love it. I understand that you most likely already made plans to read other books, I just want to hear the professional of fantasy book reviews take a glimpse into something that I'm reading right now.
Sorry to be the person to recommend you a book. I know it must be annoying, but please do continue with these awesome videos. You rock man!
Have you or will you ever read Star Wars legends books? Like the thrawn trilogy, new Jedi order, fate of the Jedi, etc? Thanks for all you do. Also just finished breach of peace last night. I really enjoyed it!
I think you should check out Akira and Y:The Last Man. Both are quite excellent in the sci-fi and story telling aspects
Nice, Guards! Guards! by Terry Pratchett was so far my top read of the year, and Men at Arms, and Feet of Clay.
Would you ever do a video on which of your favorite books deserves to be adapted for tv or movies 🤔☺️😊
It my man loved the syrup arc, he’s gonna pog out for everything that comes after
As a 40k fan I hope you come to read the rest of the Eisenhorn tri-triology. Dan Abnett is a beast.
LOVE the RAFO shirt!!
Hey Daniel how about doing a tier list of the most original concept books?
I literally finished Breach of Peace an hour ago. I'm putting it near the top of my A tier. Best thing I can say is I tried to read it critically, but kept getting absorbed in the story. Hard to find flaws past one or two word choices. If I didn't know better, I would have bet it was a mid-series work from an established author. Can't wait to get more from this universe.
Yeah if you're a character reader Ringworld isn't likely to impress you. For concept or worldbuilding readers though this is a must. Love these videos so much btw.
could you do a 2021 book recomendation on how to start reading big fantasy books/ which book to start reading first?
I think The Red Threads of Fortune - the second book after The Black Tides of Heaven in the Tensorate series - doesn't have many of the problems with the pacing and infodumping the first one has. The first I was reading for days despite it being so short, the second read more like a proper quick novella, with reasonably deep characters and a sharp plot. I hope the series keeps improving with the next volumes.
Can't help but notice the alignment at about 5:30 where the titles merge to form the 'Olden Scorning' on the left side.... lol
OK so I need advice. I'm just finishing up the witcher series, I have some credits saved up on audible and have limited time to listen while I'm driving for work. Murderbot or the green bone saga first?
After seeing that cover I wanted to read John Gwynne but hadn't heard anything about him.
Better believe I'm picking it up soon!
The third book in the Arcane Ascension series just came out... and it did not disappoint.
You should definitely check out the rest of the series.
Daniel: I haven’t read too much this year with the move and writing BoP, so...
Me: *Has read like four books so far*
Audiobooks have been a great experience for me and increased the number of books I am "reading". I'd recommend if you are interested some libraries have the option to pick audiobooks from their site/app, using the app Libby.
I'm in that same boat :/ and I've tried audio and ebooks, though they just didn't click for me
I had a free credit from audible and I knew you, your goblinness would give me a good recommendation of what to spend it on!
Any recommendations for escapist fantasy? So, set in a non grimdark world, or a world that might be pleasant to visit?
I so can't wait to read shadow of the gods 😄🤗 I really need to start on mark Lawrence spinoff series to book of the ancestor
I consider myself a Star Wars fan. I was excited to see what they’re doing with the high republic. I was less excited to see what they’ll do with it after Light of the Jedi. But Claudia Grey has done great things and I’ll give her book a shot before panning the series. It’s good, but it didn’t capture me. I agree with Daniel.
Are you setting up a new PO box post move? I have a series I would love to see you review and was gonna send the first book or two to you.
Can’t wait for you to update this at the end of 2021, with Jade Legacy in S.
Jade Legacy in S, our feelings in shreds
This comment was brought to you by Fonda Lee being sadistic.
Let's not make any assumptions! I thought Jade War was A tier. It may not end the way one wants.
@@ZamWeazle SPOILERS
A problem I had with Jade War was that Anden and Wen didn't die. They should have died, or at least one of them should've. That kinda ruined the stakes for me.
@Daniel have you read second book of Chronicles of Amber? Is there your review for it yet or will it be? I'm a fan of series and eager to hear your thoughts on it (I do recognize some issues with those books so I understand it might not be for everyone).
Solid reviews!
...on a side note: am I still right assuming that Daniel hasn't read Naomi Noviks "His Majesty's Dragon" series yet? Or have I just missed this? I thought Daniel had a soft spot for flintlock fantasy?
Love the vid! What were some of the books you read and didn't put up in the tier ranking?
I think you nailed it 100% on Ringworld--as a modern reader, it's an utterly failed novel.
I'd love a review (read: your thoughts) on the Honor Harrington series.
One piece my favorite fiction of all time, such a great manga
Yesss the part of the year where I get to learn how to sound like a literate cool kid who knows the cool new books
Just a few years ago Daniel made a vlog where he was like "Eh I tried Pratchett, it was pretty good, eh.. I'll give it another shot maybe"
GOT'IM!
Gahhhh you make my day so much better.
I also loved One Piece from the beginning but I wouldn't put syrup village arc above B either. Hopefully you read/review more One Piece soon.
The fact that he enjoyed this arc so much makes me so excited for what he thinks of future arcs 😂
I binged all of one piece over March and April and Syrup Village is potentially the worst arc in the whole series
I want to see you review the original Chronicles of Thomas Covenant. I rarely see this fantasy series talked about on Booktube but it has to be one of the first and most infamous dark fantasy series. Before there was Abercrombie, Lawrence, Brett and their ilk, there was Donaldson with this unbelievably brutal and dark high fantasy. Like Tolkien, but so grim you either love or hate it. Indeed, Covenant is described as the "most unlikable supposedly sympathetic protagonist in a book" of all time. Would love to hear your thoughts on this series.
Just finished Unsouled last night as well. Feel about the same, but have hopes for that later books.
The middle of the year is more arround the end of June - you'd have more books to rank if you did it then - sorry if there's a scheduling reason I am unaware of here.
Also, I for one would be into you ranking the books you hadn't reviewed up here as well - no one should be confused by it (though a mention of it's reviewed status will keep people from looking for it, as I did after Brittany's list) and it can function as a little fly-by mini-review, we wouldn't otherwise get. Just my two cents, but do as you will, I'm game - Cheers!
Sci-fi/space opera recommendation: Iain M Banks: Use of Weapons.
Yes! Tier List!!!
I read a really good indie crime thriller a couple months back. I can't remember what it's called, but I think you'd like it. It's by a booktuber, maybe you know them!
Also, I haven't read One Piece, but your demeanor when you talk about it compared to how you spoke about the other A and B tier books - I'm surprised you put it mid B because you were much sunnier talking about it than a lot of the other books! So what brought it "that low"?
Have you tried Strata by Terry Pratchett? It's pretty much a parody of Ringworld (I'm sure it's parodying a lot of other things but Ringworld really stands out) but ends up being a lot better (to me).
Read some other Warhammer 40k novels that are absolutely beast mode: try a spin off crime novel called Bloodline or maybe the Watchers of the Throne series (2 godly books so far).
alright, quick thing on 40k, its a mixed bag cause its a big ol’ bag, howhever I must say the infinite and the divine absolutely slaps, great book about time traveling egyptian space terminators being tourists, litterally doctor who but its two old as hell robots that are vaguely evil
reading guants ghosts and it starts out quite well and according to other people gets better, I cant really tell since I am a guard fanboy howhever I really liked the start, and its writen by dan abnett
When will you read the 4th and 5th book of the Red Rising saga? Can't wait to hear what your reaction are.
I'm waiting for Daniel's review on Dark Age. I bet its going to crack me up.
I havent read many fantasy books, but my thought have always been it a childish ( i mean it is not too complicated ) and easy to predict genre. Am I wrong or am I right thinking that way? This is a genuine question since I kind of want to read fantasy currently but that thought has kept stopping me. Thank you
loved it
Damn I really need to get to reading red rising. All the people I know who've read it, loved it
It's a page turner. Liked the first book but wasn't totally hooked till book 2. Great series overall!
Shadow of the Gods is now added to my Amazon cart per Daniel Greene.
would love to hear your thoughts on the Sun Eater series by Christopher Ruocchio
I think I need an "excited goblin noises" gif just for my daily bookish life.
Morning Star is amazing! I agree it’s the best out of the trilogy.
Wow the cover of black tides of heaven is amazing
Love these videos! Excited for part 2
I'm on book 2 of the Arcane Ascension series and I'm loving it. Much of that is how... Not 'super' the MC is. Corin is a young man trying to survive, and figure himself out. Plus the books take time. It's not an 'Oh, one week and all the adventure' set up.
Daniel, have you ever taken a look at the series "Undying Mercenaries"? bit of a guilty pleasure of mine. Would be fun to hear your thoughts on it.
Undying mercenaries is a pretty good time, you might want to check out Expeditionary Force. The audiobook is really good, R C Bray kills it with the banter between Joe and Skippy.
Hey Daniel :) I like your Videos a lot and they got me into reading Books again. I just wanted to recommend a webnovel (dont know if you read webnovels) i enjoyed. Its called Lord of Mysteries and it has the most amazing Magic System and World Building i have ever seen in a book. Its kind of a mystery( a lot of madness), detective, dark fantasy book....
The turtle and eagle intro to small gods is just so good.
if i, a random person on the internet who has never interacted with you before, could recommend an indie book, i'd recommend Priest by Matt Colville. i really liked it (some of that is probably tied to how i like Matt Colville in general for his D&D stuff, but still)
Olden Scorning. Need to read that.
I hope one day Daniel will read my book and it will appear on one of these tier lists. Even if it's D tier, I'd be thrilled to see it.
What are your unpopular opinions on the wheel of time? Or have you already made a video about this?
Hope you read the Bone Ships and the rest of the Tide Child trilogy soon @daniel greene
Too bad that you didn't like the Amber Chronicles. I agree with you regarding the Ringworld, it was not very good even back in the day when the ideas it built upon were still fresh, but when the Amber Chronicles are in question, I think you should give it another try. Zelazny is a good writer and the series as a whole is among my favorites. Historically speaking, it is one of the cornerstones of the genre, and for that reason, I think you should at least try to read the entire series. I think your opinion might change.
Nice nice
A list is still nice, even if it’s not as much as last year.
Gotta agree about Old Man's War. Picked it up off the freebies table at LibertyCon a few years ago. It was OK, but I can see why someone gave it away.
Do you plan on reading Project Hail Mary?
I'm loving the son of storm!
YES!
I’ve only read like 7 so far...Abercrombie’s Last Argument for King, Best Served Cold, Heroes, Red Country...Vernes 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea...Dickens Christmas Carol...and Greene’s Breach of Peace.
Recorded this before the JG interview! It’s currently live on the channel :)
did you read Relentless from RA Salvatore last year, if so where would you grade that?
read stand still stay silent it's a webcomic and it's really good
Having established with John Gwynne just how much you love it when a book makes you laugh out loud, I suspect he'd understand why Small Gods edged it in this tier list. I was CRYING with laughter when I read Small Gods back in the 90s.
Hey if your reading manga and stuff I’d recommend Monster it’s a series about a promising young doctor in post war Germany who makes the choice saves the life of a young orphan vs the mayor of his town . The boy Johan Lambert who was injured in a fire with only his sister surviving or the mayor of the town, an important man. Everyone wants him to save the mayor but he makes the choice to save the life of the child. A choice that potentially cost him his reputation, connections, fiancé, and promising career. But years later he finds himself entangled in a group of murders all related to the boy he saved that day who grows up to be a serial killer zHe feels responsible for all the deaths vowing to fix his mistake of saving the young boys life. He sees good and evil, the way he and Johans paths intertwine, makes harsh decisions , feels joy and loss, and wonders to himself the cost and choice made to save people and the decisions made that decide who lives and who dies. Who should be saved and who shouldn’t and the cost and responsibility of such actions.
