Paignton to Kingswear and back with 7827 Lydham Manor

- This video came about purely by chance. On the Tuesday of our week in Devon, we dropped in at Churston station to see which loco was running the one train service, and were pleasantly surprised when 7827 Lydham Manor appeared round the curve, running smokebox first. We spent the rest of the day videoing all remaining departures, and were able to pick up where we left off the following day, with loco, train and weather all remaining the same. On the Thursday, we took a ride on the train, videoing almost the entire journey from the window directly behind the loco. At Kingswear, we shot a departure and an arrival before returning to Paignton, this time further back in the train. We then covered the one remaining round trip of the day from the lineside.
Talking to 7827's fireman at Paignton, we learned that this was the loco's last day in service for the week, so we had been very lucky with our three days.
Friday was spent on the South Devon Railway, and with the GWR double header to Plymouth on the Saturday, and our return home on the Sunday, it has only been in the last week that we have finally got down to the editing. We are quite pleased with the results. Having removed the section between Churston and Greenway Halt (where the loco is merely rolling downhill on one of the less scenic parts of the line), the only other weakness is the return section between Churston and Paignton. This consists entirely of on train footage as all our lineside shots of the forward facing loco concentrate on the uphill portion of the route.

The continuous good weather and the decision to roster Lydham Manor for most of the week brought this comprehensive view of what has to be one of the most scenic lines in the country together. Thanks for your continued support Bob.

Sorry for the delay in replying. Most of the lineside shots are filmed using a JVC HM700. For the footage taken from the window we used a JVC HM150. The built in stabilizer helps to give the still effect. Thank you for your comment.

That is beautifully filmed! Can you tell me what camera you used? How did you keep the footage so stable when filming the sideways shot pointing forwards?
I thought the sidings on the right at 4:20 were now owned by the steam railway?
Where do you park your car [i have blue badge] as i am going on this trip in september. Need all day parking.
Brilliant video.superb shots from great locations.But the video was in our oppinion was to long.About 10 to 15 mins is adequte.Hope you had a enjoyable day (C&A)
