Hey Mike ,this is why I love your channel, you tell what will work or not. It's just like having a back porch friend coming for coffee and a chat ,Lol.😀
Mike, I made four of your Downspout Planters. Great Idea!! Because I hate wasting anything I used the disk cut outs from the downspout to make reusable Plant markers, by attaching the disks to scrap pieces of pvc tubing.
I’m living for this downspout hydroponics!!! 🥰 Bought an aluminum one 😂 and searched the degrees at which it bends and at that point I knew I messed up. About 1,000 degrees fahrenheit 🔥
I had to take it back to and get a vinyl one. There is always a set back with me not surprised at all 😂 This is the cheapest simplest way on UA-cam. My college budget praises you. 😚 Time for some drilling.
Just found your channel and you actually made me feel like I can do this. Thanks for the videos.
This is so great. I am going to try this after checking more of your videos.
Hey Mike, you really got me interested in hydroponics! You're so passionate about it! You're real! I like your enthusiasm!! Time to get going!! Thanks
Awesome Larry. I know you will get just as excited when you get into it! Thanks much 😎🌱
I have tried to save this many times. But it took for ever but it did save.
Would love to see an attempt at fruiting plants with voluminous roots like melons or tomatoes.
Would be a mess to clean but great experiment.
Great stuff Mike. You've inspired me. One Q. How do you allow for stem diameter growth with the pool noodle. Does the initial noodle set up squeeze too much on the stem of the new shoot.
Hey, thanks! The pool noodle is soft enough to allow for the roots to grow. Ry not to squash them when you first put them in, use it just to hold the plant in place.
Hey Mike I really enjoy your channel, I am also a gardener, my stuff is traditional raised bed, being watered with aquaculture water, via rain barrel water exchange, small scale backyard city lot,, I am going to build some of the rain spout systems like you have for my back porch railing, I would like to get a sample of the Masters Blend if i can to try before i commit to going full hydroponics, i'm also doing aquaponics on a small scale in a spare bedroom trying to grow lettuce this winter,, If the hydroponics does well, it would save me a lot of maintenance and money having to keep fish for nutrient, just timers on lights,, Thanks again for showing us a different way it gives me a lot of food for thought,, Michael Bush
No problem. Sounds like you have an awesome set up. Let meknow how it goes. 😎🤘
Hello Mike, I just watched one of your videos and enjoyed it very much. I am new to this type of gardening and would love to have some samples for the nutrient solution. I’m also wondering what other types of plants can be grown this way? I will be growing for a few friends along with myself and my husband., (5 people) so far, if this works well then I’m going to sell at local farmers market and give to local foodbank . Blessed be!
Really enjoying your attitude and enthusiasm! It's nice that you live in Florida where it's warm all year, but I'm in Virginia. If I want to use your method to grow greens in the winter months indoors - what do I need to do about lighting? Is it possible to grow greens in a sunny window without supplemental lighting?
Most of the time you need supplemental lighting unless just growing microgreens. I only use Gidden Harvest Grow lights.
I just love your channel. You do Kratky from watching so many of your videos. How does this methodology compare to the hydroponic system using a pump to circulate the water?
Aeration works better if you can do it. Most stuff on my channel is without aeration making it easy for everyone.😃👍🌱
Mr D, Have you ever rooted grocery store lettuce and cabbage then tried to finish growing hydroponically? I’m guessing you would have to use the cups since the root ball would be a little big for the pool noodle
Hi Mike, your videos are inspiring.i am going to begin my downspout plants. Could you tell me what size is the holes you drilled in the downspout? Thank you for all you share.
Hey, thank you so much! The holes were 1 7/8" because I used to use a 2" net cup in them. Check the pool noodle you are using, some of them are smaller diameter than others.
Love your setup. May I ask instead of sprouts can you use straight seeds? If so how does it gather the nutrients?
No, you have to sprout the seed. The pool noodle just holds the plant in place.
Hey I a new subscriber! I am really digging your hydroponic system and the simplicity of it. I am a new hydroponic gardener myself and will try your system once I get enough space to allow it. I do have a quick question being your plants are on your porch rail how much sunlight are they getting a day?
Tara Lloyd hey, they get about 4 hours of direct sunlight in the morning. I am in Florida. After about noon, it gets in the 90's and is too hot for lettuce. During the late fall and winter, I set some in the yard to get full sun. Nice to meet you. If you have anymore questions, just ask. I also have a Facebook group called Keep on Growin', it says vegan recipes, but it is my gardening too. (I am a nice vegan, lol) I am sending some friends in the group a small amount of nutrients so they can experiment.
MrDuzee1 Nice to meet you to! I am also based out of Florida, panhandle area. I was asking cause I to have a patio garden and only get the morning sun. Your plants are beautiful and I'm just in awe of how they are turning out. I was thinking of trying out your downspout idea with some pvc piping. What do you think? Have a beautiful day!
Wow! You have inspired me! Thank you! You mentioned in one of your videos that you have the small packs of ingrdients for the mastermix. I am interested in that, where can I find them? Also, I would like to start something small, indoors, do you grow indoors at all?
I start my micros indoor. I am getting some shelves put up now for growing indoors. I have not done any videos yet, but I will soon. I used to have an online store. I now sell through my wife's Etsy shop. I will put a sample for ordering enough for a 5 gallon bucket. Probably free with a shipping charge for plastic bags, envelopes, shipping, etc. Can only do USA because of customs. Will tell you when I put a link up. Thanks for the compliments. 😎🤘
Do you refill your downspout mid-grow ? If so, how high ? Thanks for another informative vid !!
It depends, sometimes I am eating it quicker than it has time to use up the nutrient solution. The ones in the end of the video, I added two extra gallons before harvesting for a total of about 5 gallons total. I usually fill it about half way and try to maintain that level if I let it go for a long period.
Masterblend will definitely be my go-to nutrients, the ingredients are way easy and effective, but I’d have to see how to store it though.
Yes, just make sure you keep the Calcium Nitrate dry, I usually save some silicone packets and toss them in the container with it.
@@KeepOnGrowin - Not silicone - silica gel. You can make your own packets. There is a cat litter on the market that's 100% silica gel which makes for some super cheap packets.
Hello Mike do you ever change the nutrient water? I have just discovered your channel and I.am learning a lot. Thumbs up
MrDuzee, could you show me how to get access to the PDF file of the computer? what Icon, and what's its name? what to click, and I'll be very appreciated it, thank you!!!
Sandra xyz when you click the link in the description, you go to my store. Scroll down and you will see the E-book.
How do you keep excess rain from filling up the containers?
Marilyn Barbour these are on my porch under an awning. They face the morning sun and get shade in the afternoon.
Hi, there! Thanks for the feedback! I don't have a heat gun, so I haven't figured out how to seal the ends. I've got a tube of silicone sealant. What can I use to block off the ends? Thanks!!!
If you are in my Facebook group "Keep on Growin", someone just posted a picture of them using silicone to attach an elbow that goes on the downspout. You can just cover that with foil or some plastics wrap and a rubber band. I will pick one up and try to cover that in my next video. 😎🤘
Also, will it disrupt this system to get rained on?
Depends on how long it takes to grow your crop and how many openings there are for rain to get in and flood it or dilute your solution. Some plants, like the Pak Choy can handle the flooding while others really need that open space for oxygen intake. I use fast growing greens that will all be replanted in a month or so with a new crop.
what amounts do you use for 5 gallons? the 2 here in the plastic bags were not the same amounts (not epsom salts)
Is this one you ordered from me? Each packet should have 2 bags in it. One is the Masterblend and epsom salt mixed together and the other is the calcium nitrate (looks like tiny white pellets).
If you got it from the internet, 10g/10g/5g of Masterblend tomato fertilizer, calcium nitrate and epsom salt per 5 gallons of water.
wow.. some good crops!
How do you save it from deer, rabbits etc.?
Keep the containers close to the house. My territorial Chihuahua marks her space every few feet, lol.😎🐶
Hello again, what is the measurement in spoons of each nutrient for 5 gal?
What proportion/ratio of each of these nutrients do you use for your master blend? It looks like maybe a tbsp A to a tsp each of B & C.
Mike, you said you use plastic cup to when you need to add water. Do you just add water or the solution mixture? Thanks.
@@KeepOnGrowin Thanks, when the water goes down in about 3 weeks, then you add the nutrient solution to put it back to the right level, is that right?
I have researched about it and learned the concept so no need to answer my last question. I also learned the Kratky method. Thanks.
What would you say the time frame of those bok choy to adult size?do they grow faster than in the ground? Also what about the spinach and other foods?
About 4 to 6 weeks, depending on temp and how much sun they get. I never grew them in the ground. Spinach is tough and needs to be grown in the cooler seasons.
Hey I'm a new grower and I'm really interested and the way you set up your hydro grow I want to try to start is anyway I can get a sample of your nutrients the names Alvin Young
Mike have you done beats. I know it’s a root but the Leaf are great. What say you????
Yes, I grow them almost every year, forgot this Fall. The leaves are excellent and no sand, lol
is it tough to use urine as a nutrient? I'm dealing with high pH and cant figure out how to lower it.. think its around 9. was thinkin of bubbling some SO2 in it with some peroxide
NwoDispatcher I do not worry about pH. If your water supply is too high, get bottled. My system does not take that much water.
I ordered citric acid on Amazon to lower the PH. It doesnt take much at all
How do you clean out the gutters from algee
Fill with clean water, add a little bleach, let set overnight and then clean it out.
I wish I could say Vynal down pipe in Polish as I live in Nysa in Poland and need to buy my bits in Castorama or in Leeroy Merlin
Hi do you have any experience growing Gai lan (chinees brocolli)?
Antonius Jungerman No, but if it does good in hydroponics, I will get some seed and give it a try.
That experiment would be great. That's what I want to do in hydroponic their is a great demand for that in my country. The chinees just love to use it in their dishes... and by wachting your channel i have learn to start a pilot (inexpensive) hydroponic. So many thanks
Antonius Jungerman You're welcome, I am glad you could work something out, let me know how it goes.
You can have every downspout on my house if you promise to share the bounty!!! Hahahahaha
Could you use worm's tea? Not sure if that's the name in English, it's the liquid that comes out of vermicompost. The volume is really low. There is an insect there louder than you. Other than that, great video.
Yes, it is a cicada, loud little buggers. Most off grid hydro stays away from organics like that, without circulation it goes bad and smells something awful. I am going to experiment with more this year!
Masterblend came out with a two part mix.
Just starting in hydroponics. I also am in Fl. Trying to get some lettuce started from seed not having much luck. I think maybe the heat. I have a couple of peppers going.
Hello sir mike,I just wanna ask if have you experienced growing potatoes in hydroponic way? I wanna know how...please I’m looking forward for your answer, thank you in advance and God Bless you and your family 🙏🏻
Thank you. I have not grown potatoes. Most root vegetables do not do well in hydroponics.
@@KeepOnGrowin ok sir thank you so much for the attention and reply,so i guess I'll just plant the root crops to soil 😁
Can tel me how much it is in a cup please
Aline Mcfadden There is 10g Masterblend tomato formula, 10g calcium nitrate and 5g Epsom salt per 5 gallons of water.
Your plants are so big, it must be what's in the nutrient solution. because mine are just less than 6 inches, and stressed, or yellowing.
Mike. You're selling the mix ? If so. Link ?
Thank you Mike ! Now annoying question, apologies...... Would you / could you ship to Chile ? ((would love to bring it on plane, but looks like the word nitrate wouldnt be kosher regardless if it is inert )) Thank you for the videos btw !!! I am on about 4 so far and loving them !!!
@@KeepOnGrowin
Can I get a sample?
Just want to try it out?
Yes, the link in the description to my ebook also leads to my Etsy shop where I have a sample size.
You didn't say how much of each ingredient you put in. Doesn't it matter how much of each one?
Mike, why are you using MB Tomato blend instead of MB Lettuce formula? Higher NPK value? Thanks for the info btw.
Hey, when I started experimenting 5 years ago, the person I was watching used this. I lived in a rural area and ordered a 25lb bag to save money. I have been using that same bag for all of the stuff you see in all of my videos over the pas few years and then some. I still have about 10 lbs left. When I run out, I may experiment if I can get a small quantity.
@@KeepOnGrowin i see. I'm using the MB lettuce formula sets (10g mb, 10g calcium nitrate, 6g magnesium sulfate) right now and i'm a bit worried that i wont get the same pak choy output like yours
@@KeepOnGrowin same NPK actually. tomato formula has 2 more grams than lettuce formula for the 5 gallon mix.
lettuce set
10g 4 18 38 Masterblend
10g calcium
5g magnesium
tomato formula
12g masterblend
12g calcium
6 magnesium
@@invaderbins Sounds like it should be fine, let me know how it turns out.
whats the channel insta?
Keep on Growin' with Mike VanDuzee The instagram, but idk if there is one for the channel some people only use certain platforms.
So what the hell do you put in the gutter you never tell us that part do you need a fish tank pump air stone in the gutter
Hello Mike. I just discovered your channel. Awesome Awesome. I wondered if you ever grow different kinds of plants in the container or the same plants? do you ever use an organic product for pest? Love your channel
Thank you so much! I grow mostly fast maturing plants and leafy greens. I have done a few tomatos, beet greens , banana peppers, etc. I used to use BT for pests, but now I just try to grow enough for me and them. If I am out of town too long, it can be a disaster.
Oh wow! You have such a good heart. I am looking to grow strawberries, raspberries, tomatoes and greens. Any suggestions? I will continue to follow your videos to see what else I can find.
Chelle P Lots of greens here on my channel. I am still working on strawberries, not too successful yet.
