Surface hardening is one such routine surface treatment, which either transforms the vulnerable surface into a hard layer through nitridation, oxidation, boronizing, or ion implantation, or coats the surface with wear-resistant materials such as chromium, tungsten carbide, or alumina.
What type of process is surface hardening?
To achieve these different properties, two general processes are used: 1) The chemical composition of the surface is altered, prior to or after quenching and tempering; the processes used include carburizing, nitriding, cyaniding, and carbonitriding; and 2) Only the surface layer is hardened by the heating and ...
What is the difference between hardening and surface hardening?
The biggest difference between each process is that case hardening creates a thin layer on the surface. Surface hardening hardens the outer surface and keeps the core soft throughout the entire process.
The hardening process consists of heating the components above the critical (normalizing) temperature, holding at this temperature for one hour per inch of thickness cooling at a rate fast enough to allow the material to transform to a much harder, stronger structure, and then tempering.
What are the types of hardening?
Some common types of hardening include strain hardening, solid solution strengthening, precipitation hardening, and quenching and tempering
What are the advantages of surface hardening compared to through hardening?
The surface hardened material provides great resistance to sliding abrasive wear while resisting bending and torque. The through hardened alloy or carbon material provides a good balance of toughness (a combination of wear, impact, and gouging resistance).
What kind of steel can be hardened?

Why do we harden steel?
The main objective of hardening the machine components made of structural steels of the pearlitic class is, to develop high, yield strength with good toughness and ductility, so that higher working stresses are allowed.
What is quenching and annealing?
Annealing is a metal treatment process that uses heat to alter the characteristics of metal after quenching. The main purpose of annealing is to remove the hardness of metal alloys and increase ductility. After quenching, metal tends to become brittle, and that can increase the risk of breakage.
