I would suggest that fidgters and non-fattening are NOT cause and effect, but both effects of a same cause ... or very closely associated causes ( then fidgeting and not becoming fat is called a spurious [fake] cause -consequence effect, even if statistically significant) .
Those tapping foot moves are called 貧乏揺すり) shaking or tapping (usu. one's foot) unconsciously; fidgeting (esp. of the legs) · Poverty shake · Poverty Shaking. Or in other words a weak mind…Mum’s here stop the kids doing this
I think a person is naturally like this. I’ve written myself notes to fidget more and while I’m highly active, I have to consciously think about fidgeting. It’s not a fun thing to do, to add to my already exercise and calorie obsessed mind to do more, more, more!
I think fidgeting feels great. My teachers used to hate how I bounce my leg in class when I was a kid. I wasn't feeling anxious, that I knew of, it just felt good. Still does.
Bought myself a Bluetooth headset so i can walk around the room on some work calls and it really does make a huge difference. My step count has increased by 4000 per day and I have been a lot more successful in losing weight and keeping it off.
Fidgeters are more likely to be in a calorie surplus which is why they have the extra energy to fidget. Once you begin a deficit, the extra movements of fidgeting tend to reside as your body becomes acclimated to the deficit to conserve energy.
I am an example against that theory. I fidgeted more when slim and very (nor overly) active training horse for Endurance. Now I do less, gained more and fidget less.
That was never true of my 135 lbs husband. He was hyper and fidgety all the time, and didn't eat much. Until I got him to relax and eat larger meals. now he is 160 lbs. I dont let him fidget, I find it distracting and child-like. I bought him his own set of drums, he has taken to it well. plays till he sweats, and still gained weight. finally!
Bloody brilliant, LOL. Don't know why I've been holding myself back all this time with fidgeting. Also explains why my husband is always so bloody thin all the time.
this actually makes so much sense. Before I developed an eating disorder (I'm in recovery now) I had a lot of energy and was a constant fidgetier, I was eating so much food and stayed at a healthy weight. But after I lost so much energy that I had trouble just getting out of bed, I stopped fidgeting, and it never returned as a habit despite physically recovering, and now I burn a lot less calories every day.
Me 2 but if you go into a calorie deficit you'll see your weight will drop fast it's possible you're insulin resistant that's whta I found with me at least

I've seen many fidgeters who have some extra weight and they struggle to shed it. Similarly, I've seen many people who are very skinny, eat a lot, they are as slow as a turtle and don't put weight on. I'd be curious to read that study and see how well was conducted.
All valid questions. You might be interested in this article which summarized how the study was conducted as well as the results! www.sciencedaily.com/releases/1999/01/990119080449.htm
@@RespireOfficialso this article is talking about NEAT being 33 percent effective not about fidgeting which is a whole other thing..fidgeting is seen in restless anxious people who can’t sit still but these people don’t get sleep easily either which is important for weight loss..I agree about NEAT being effective but don’t agree to the fidgeting part
I feed cattle for a living and I’m in northern Montana where we can get temperatures as low as -50. On a normal winter day a cow will need about 30 lbs of hay to maintain while if it’s -30 and windy she will eat more like 40 or 45 pounds, which is all she can manage to consume, and still probably not maintain. It seems to work for me as well. In the winter I can’t seem to get enough carbs but it doesn’t seem to add any fat.
The thing is, they’re not doing this on purpose. They are most likely eating enough calories to where their bodies naturally wants to burn it off. I bet you none of them care or even know if they burn calories through fidgeting and a lot of them probably don’t even care how much they eat.
I think this is very logical. It highly suggest people who are operating at an "excited" level burns more energy throughout the day while those who don't "fidget" at operating at a rested state and thus burn less. It seems to imply that one should strive to spend the day at a higher pace than normal, faster walks, brisk movement and of course, to include a lot of activity throughout, at low intensity but prolonged. Couple that with consistent low impact workouts, should mean a very good and sustainable lifestyle at managing weight while getting things done more. What a nice combo. Lets get it, insha ALLAH.
Pacing ,fidgeting all signs that come with psychiatric meds …great idea. It’s the concept of being in flight or fight, sympathetic versus parasympathetic.
This actually makes sense I seem to lose a lot of weight when I knit , I went through a phase of knitting loads of baby clothes when my grandkids were young and I did loose quite a lot of weight as every time I sat down I would be doing knitting. So I do agree with this .
I hate this information. You hear this advice, but it is more than just extra movement. I had made it a point to take 20-30k steps a day, even in the heat to burn extra calories. My app would say around an extra 500 to 900 calories. You have to have the right body temperature to activate enzymes for all body functions and improve sleep. My watch app would say I burned around 50 calories a mile, when it should be 100. When I did the ride across Iowa, a friend of mine and I never lost any weight. It is so much more than movement. He went on a medication and then the weight fell off. It didn’t work for me. I was overweight in the military, but was so in shape that they would have to give me a perfect score on the fitness test. It was so frustrating for us.
yea i'm positive genetics and things our bodies are not activating for one or more reasons as the culprits. I'm just like you i lost like 30 points in a year just to add it back and it's frustrating. I'm also thinking of going on medication because at this point nothing is working.
Listen Wendy, I don't know your age, but if you are in or close to Menopause, then the only thing that will work for burning off fat and having good body temperature is HRT, and not just estrogen and progesterone, but add in Thyroid hormone as well. Once your hormones leave they never come back. your body cannot burn fat without progesterone which you aren't making if you stopped ovulating, and estrogen lowers blood sugars very well, keeping insulin levels low, which is key for keeping the pounds off. this is the only thing that worked for me.
So what about a few minutes on a vibration plate daily. It feels similar to shivering. Do you think that will be similarly effective? Very interesting - thanks!
Respectively suggest that merely being moved by a machine does not make your body work more to deal with it. More likely that that a machine that made you work to keep balance would fit the bill. I have bought a £13 wooden wobble board from Amazon to stand on at the bathroom sink while brushing teeth and shaving and then showering. Wonderful! Jim Murray
if that were true, than everybody's grandma would be skinny, and all the ones I have ever seen are quite plump and fat, until they reach their 90s, then they shrivel up! I am an avid knitter, and nope. unless one can manage to do it while riding a stationery bike or walk treadmill while knitting, I dont think so!
@@loneranger7573 Well actually if it did work, it would only work if you watched your caloric intake, and I don’t know any grannies counting calories lol. Because if you eat the extra you burn, you won’t be able to tell the difference. The only way to really tell is to crochet/knit on a diet then just diet without knit/crochet and compare. But I really appreciate your close-minded and sarcastic response.
Oh, that's right. Now everyone will think it's better to shiver or fidget or pace. Sorry everyone. Daily exercise, moderately done, along with healthy eating will keep you healthy. There are no gimmicks .
Its crazy how you speak of being fidgety... Because as a child I was taught to sit still and not "fidgeting". I went to a charter school and they were strict with that. 😂 I know I am grown now. But its sooooooooo engrained in me. Lol I'm going to incorporate it in my daily life. ❤ its a great thing to add along with excerise.
I did all those things all my life. I could not gain weight. Society continuously tells us to be still. I'm no longer so thin. I will no longer try to be still except when intentional. Never to please another. I naturally figit.😂❤
My understanding is that it seems to suggest that being excitable that translate to physical movements, is a very powerful way of encouraging the body to burn energy because your body anticipated your fidgeting/nervousness into "he/she needs energy. Quick, burn the energy stores!" ALLAH has really made it easy for us, what a marvelous design the body is.
I guess unconsciousness fidgeting is something that nervous people do. Nervous people do that during every single work they do and this might negatively impact other aspects of their life. But, if we consciously add small movements selectively into our daily life, this can be beneficial, especially small things like frequently standing up and sitting down instead of sitting a long time behind our desks while working. Or we can do daily chores like washing our dishes by hands instead of using machines. In this case, we are burning calories while doing some other tasks that can bring other useful effects.
Wouldn't a person with a higher metabolism (associated with weight loss) tend to be fidgeters anyway? So couldn't that be the underlying factor, i.e. metabolism?
@@RespireOfficialI've always understood a faster metabolism is one associated with a more efficient conversion of fat to energy as opposed to a slower metabolism that readily converts calories to stored energy in the form of fat.
So those with faster, fat-burning metabolisms literally fidget a lot because they have energy to burn and stay slim whereas people with slower, fat-retaining metabolisms won't have that energy and are more likely to be sedentary as opposed to fidgeters.
One way to trick yourself to burn calories is to walk 3 miles to a store twice a day as to pretend you are going shopping every day for food or essential needs or hang out at the mall for but take no more than 25 bucks so you dont spend too much money, get a hiking buddy or spend most of your dad outdoors walking every where yoy need to go even to get the bus places. In the 90s we constantly moved and was lean. My friend is in his 60s and has been super fit his entire his life and he eats half his meal standing up and never sits down unless it is bed time or he is meditating.
I find that Andrew Huberman does an amazing job articulating and selling people on the biggest bags of bullshit and make them truly believe there is merit to it.
@@RespireOfficial Yes, since I feel, for example, that the energy level in my body increases or is maintained when I (and it feels good), for example, shake my foot, drum with my fingers, and headbanging to music, or generally just shake to nothing, and if i not do this I will get tired! And I also feeling ready for anything, can this be because the increases adrenalin in nevron or is it my Aspergers Syndrom "the blame" (shaking is form sort selv stimulation for these people not only for Aspergers Syndrom but also for ADHD?)? So maybe "Normal" vs neurodevelopmental disorders people react different on this topic? Have a wonderful day!!
This would explain why I know for a fact I eat way more than what the calorie calcs say, but never gain weight. I am fat, though, but I should def be way fatter. And constantly gaining weight.
I have been like this my whole life and I have been overweight my whole life. I’m a well known fidgeter. I hate to just sit still with good posture. I’m always perching on chairs and changing positions, and getting up quickly. Anyway I guess it never worked for me…
People who fidget are also probably fighting because of their higher metabolism. Fidgeters tend to be high energy people. Is it possible that it's the other way around? Higher metabolism causes fidgeting?
I know someone with Parkinson that has lost a lot of weight because of the shakes/tremors all day. She is also constantly anxious...possibly from soo much adrenaline being released
Your science friend was also burning calories with thinking, and "excessive" thinking most likely "encouraged" the twitching, by that I mean, his brain waves' resonance passed some electricity to his receptors that control his limbs.
I stopped the video at 2:30... I have a coworker, who I hate because during the 8 hours he is in the office, he is bouncing one leg. Sometimes both legs. *He is obese.* Very. I find it hard to believe this theory.
2,500 calories per day! That's more than I consume in a day. Isn't this mirco movement similar to what they used to sell years ago (maybe they still do). They were gel pads you attached to your abdomen that sent electrical pulses. They were 'supposed' to give you 6-pack abs by stimulating the muscles in the abdomen. Maybe they did work, not by building the muscle, but by 'burning off' the fat.
My husband is an unstoppable fidgeter - foot tapping, knee-bumping, drumming with fingers, staccato, sudden, angular movements, always rushing about with no purpose. In short, super annoying. I have to remember to get out of his way all the time to escape injury. The effects claimed here seem to be a bit of an exaggeration. He has always been an over-eater and over-weight, and would be obese if he had not finally seen the wisdom of trying to eat and exercise as I do. I doubt very much if fidgeting can take the place of diet and exercise, unless a genetic factor is there. Of course, every bit of movement helps if you are an otherwise sedentary kind of person. But for those who actively exercise, fidgeting and darting about would hardly make a difference nor worth becoming an annoyance and hazard to people around us. Edit: There is also the danger of particularly over-used joints, like the wrist and ankles wearing out sooner, as has happened to hus, unfortunatley. But we can always stop, and heal.
So that's why I struggle with eating at a surplus for bulking. Normal people probably would enjoy that phase, but I have to eat so much that I feel bloated af. I guess the way to compensate is to eat more calorically dense food to offset the damn ADHD fidgeting effects.
Its not particularly fidgeting, its actually restlessness, my kids are like this, they are constantly restless, especially my 2 year old, shes always running around, i cant make her sit on one place, she eats and runs around and shes thin compared to other kids her age
is that 800-2500 extra calories burned per week or per day? Interesting study though, i work at a warehouse moving heavy to heavier boxes / materials and then I try to walk extra to hit 10k steps if i'm low. I just bought a mini portable stair climber / stepper to help with extra calories and strengthening but it's resistance is tougher than i thought lol

Maybe the fidgeting is a result of something that also causes fat burning.

Still does.
I got an under desk exercise "bike" to try to increase my movements throughout the day
That’s a fantastic idea!
AND?
Did it work to lose weight?
Me too lol! It seemed silly at first, but gentle exercise has proven effective ❤
I was 300 and 55 women. I started walking and just moving everyday for 2 hrs . lost 100 feel great
@@jamesmurraylegalwhy wouldn't it. You just burn more calories than you eat....
Add to this NEAT is 80% of daily energy consumption, exercises like 10-20%
❤
Bought myself a Bluetooth headset so i can walk around the room on some work calls and it really does make a huge difference. My step count has increased by 4000 per day and I have been a lot more successful in losing weight and keeping it off.
Fidgeters are more likely to be in a calorie surplus which is why they have the extra energy to fidget. Once you begin a deficit, the extra movements of fidgeting tend to reside as your body becomes acclimated to the deficit to conserve energy.
Interesting point.
I move a lot, fidget, groove when I listen to music lots, yet still pretty fat.
Then you must eat even much more than that 😀
Me 2 but if you go into a calorie deficit you'll see your weight will drop fast it's possible you're insulin resistant that's whta I found with me at least
Have you tried No sugar, No wheat, No dairy. You are not telling us your food/calorie intake, so THAT could be the reason. Intermittent fast; Don't eat till afternoon and nothing past 7pm❓🍉🫐🍠🌱🥚🫖🍵🍲🌻🌞

Fidget is only one step diet and exercise is also important so is sleep
We'd all still be doing this if we weren't reprimanded for it as kids.
This is intense, nervous energy. It's not just movement.
Yes, knitting , it's calming too
I've seen many fidgeters who have some extra weight and they struggle to shed it. Similarly, I've seen many people who are very skinny, eat a lot, they are as slow as a turtle and don't put weight on. I'd be curious to read that study and see how well was conducted.
I think in most cases skinny people are fidgeters.

As a horse owner it's always been well known that if your horse needs to lose weight over winter, dont rug, leave the animal to shiver
That sounds wrong. Please be kind to your horses and treat them well. 💗
@@muddyshoesgardener the horse is pure muscle i'm sure it was fine.

Great information for us that have severe arthritis and exercise at times is very painful.. Going to start it-Fidget
Thank you, so glad to learn that all my fidgeting actually has a purpose😬
This is a good point - curious on replies on this!
My 80 year old grandma burned 2500 calories in 2 hours. She left the dinner in the oven and it burned up.
This actually makes sense I seem to lose a lot of weight when I knit , I went through a phase of knitting loads of baby clothes when my grandkids were young and I did loose quite a lot of weight as every time I sat down I would be doing knitting. So I do agree with this .
Thanks, this is good news, what do you think about the electric devices that vibrate, can they be a replacement?
The reasons for this (and the cure for this) can be found @realJoelGreene.
Wonderful!

I have a good question. I wonder if crocheting and knitting would trigger this?
if that were true, than everybody's grandma would be skinny, and all the ones I have ever seen are quite plump and fat, until they reach their 90s, then they shrivel up!
Thankyou for sharing, very interesting.

I’m a violinist, so the more i practice & rehearse, the more I lose fat?! Mozart or Bach? What about my jazz trio?! yes!!
Vibration plates while sitting are great!!
My understanding is that it seems to suggest that being excitable that translate to physical movements, is a very powerful way of encouraging the body to burn energy because your body anticipated your fidgeting/nervousness into "he/she needs energy. Quick, burn the energy stores!"
ALLAH has really made it easy for us, what a marvelous design the body is.

So couldn't that be the underlying factor, i.e. metabolism?
That’s an interesting point, although I’m not sure I see the correlation. Why would people with higher metabolism tend to be fidgeters?
@@RespireOfficialI've always understood a faster metabolism is one associated with a more efficient conversion of fat to energy as opposed to a slower metabolism that readily converts calories to stored energy in the form of fat.
So those with faster, fat-burning metabolisms literally fidget a lot because they have energy to burn and stay slim whereas people with slower, fat-retaining metabolisms won't have that energy and are more likely to be sedentary as opposed to fidgeters.
Yes, you mean they're already wired, so tend to fidget anyway, and therefore burn more fat, hence needing to eat more. Something like that?
There is a kapha-vata-pitta three types of main body in ayurveda.kindly have a look.@@RespireOfficial
Or/and go swimming outdoors. Make sure that you get cold.
What an excellent alternative and/pr adjunct to exercise. 🎉❤🎉
So just because you lose weight does that necessarily make fidgeting healthy?
Walking is a great low effort exercise that actually works you just have to do it for a longer period of time per day.
I find that Andrew Huberman does an amazing job articulating and selling people on the biggest bags of bullshit and make them truly believe there is merit to it.
He is simply sharing an interesting and well-known study and recommending how to implement the findings in your day-to-day life. What's BS about that?
There's actually research saying the same thing
I always thought that people who are fidgeters is the secret of them being slim.
Hello, very interesting!! 🤩 Wondering how this can affect testosteroe?!
That's a great question! I'm not sure that was included in Rothwell and Stock's study.
I bounce my knee, talk with my hands, fidget and still 277. And you have a physically demanding job. What am I doing wrong?
Dancing to the groove 😅 is like fidgeting
If you're sitting, yes!
This would explain why I know for a fact I eat way more than what the calorie calcs say, but never gain weight. I am fat, though, but I should def be way fatter. And constantly gaining weight.
But does fidgeting cause weight loss, or is fidgeting a result of a higher basal metabolic rate?
Very good. Thank you.
Figures, I always got gripped at for being fidgety. I'm going back to gum chewing and foot shaking. Turns out fidget is my super power.

I have been like this my whole life and I have been overweight my whole life. I’m a well known fidgeter. I hate to just sit still with good posture. I’m always perching on chairs and changing positions, and getting up quickly. Anyway I guess it never worked for me…
If it's voluntary, then it's exercise. It's just atypical exercise.
People who fidget are also probably fighting because of their higher metabolism. Fidgeters tend to be high energy people. Is it possible that it's the other way around? Higher metabolism causes fidgeting?
great informations!!
Thank you 🙏
Thank you!

Perfect, gonna be winter here soon.
I know someone with Parkinson that has lost a lot of weight because of the shakes/tremors all day. She is also constantly anxious...possibly from soo much adrenaline being released
In a perfect world this would apply to playing video games since you are fidgeting with the controller or the keyboard.
Your science friend was also burning calories with thinking, and "excessive" thinking most likely "encouraged" the twitching, by that I mean, his brain waves' resonance passed some electricity to his receptors that control his limbs.
Interesting study!
I stopped the video at 2:30... I have a coworker, who I hate because during the 8 hours he is in the office, he is bouncing one leg. Sometimes both legs.
*He is obese.* Very.
I find it hard to believe this theory.
Thank you I found this a very interesting video
I like to be calm , not for me , to me it’s annoying
2,500 calories per day! That's more than I consume in a day. Isn't this mirco movement similar to what they used to sell years ago (maybe they still do). They were gel pads you attached to your abdomen that sent electrical pulses. They were 'supposed' to give you 6-pack abs by stimulating the muscles in the abdomen. Maybe they did work, not by building the muscle, but by 'burning off' the fat.
theres a bbc documentary about this that watch people to understand what habits they have to stay thin
how NEAT
ok im sorry someone had to say it
SO also unrelated, taking cold showers increase burn of calories?
Great info!😄
What about mechanically induced fidgeting such as those above exercisers? They may not build the abs as advertised but will it count towards NEAT?
Not for me !!
So that's why I struggle with eating at a surplus for bulking. Normal people probably would enjoy that phase, but I have to eat so much that I feel bloated af. I guess the way to compensate is to eat more calorically dense food to offset the damn ADHD fidgeting effects.
How long do you have to fidget to burn 2500 calories ?

Its not particularly fidgeting, its actually restlessness, my kids are like this, they are constantly restless, especially my 2 year old, shes always running around, i cant make her sit on one place, she eats and runs around and shes thin compared to other kids her age
