Verkligen? Jag läste den för liten tid sedan och det är den värsta boken jag har läst någonsin. Det är jobbigt att bli konfronterad med huvudkaraktärens depressiva tankar under den hela handlingen.
I was in Stockholm yesterday (a rare occasion for me, as I live hours and hours away)! And my business happened to take me to the neighborhood of the fictional Dr. Glas. By chance I came across several of the landmarks/places that Söderberg describes so beautifully in his book. It was a glorious day too (one of the first warm days of summer), so Stockholm was really at its peak yesterday! I am sure many of those beauty spots that Söderberg takes us to visit through the doctor, still look and feel much the same today. And I so loved my impromptu "dr. Glas sightseeing" tour, that now I just have to re-read this masterpiece of a book, for the umpteenth time! :) Thanks for your video, I agree with a lot with a lot of what you are saying. DO read Ibsen, if you have the time and the inclination! Again you may be surprised, I think, at the freshness of the language and the topics of his plays. Ibsen was before his time too, for sure!
I love your book review series. They are so refreshing and straight into the point with a touch of your own personality. You are honestly one of my favourite youtubers now and congrats on the 30k subscribers. Keep it going!
If you want to read more dark swedish literature from 20th century, I highly recommend Pär Lagerqvists novels The Dwarf (1944) and Barabbas (1950). The Dwarf is definitely one of my favourite books of all time.
The novel plays before 1897, because the priest mentions that they are going to build the Riksdag building "on that tiny little islet", and the building was constructed 1897-1905.
Protestant ‘priests’ never did not marry. In Scandinavia, we almost only had Lutheran protestantism for such a long time that we did not think it necessary to have different titles for priests and all that. Great review
Fan from Indonesia here, keep it up man, I think you're the best book reviewer on youtube, straight to the point. Maybe you want to try some Indonesian literatures, someday, would be really appreciated!
Glad to see a Swedish author's book reviewed! And man, you should check out Henrik Ibsen and also Knut Hamsun. Great writers from the European North :) I'm sure you'd like them. Hamsun is also often compared to Dostoyevsky and Nietzsche.
Congrats on the 30k man! Been watching your videos for about two years and you get better every video. Keep up the amazing work. Got hooked after watching your review for The Rum Diary. Miss your movie reviews.
I think you would love Lav Diaz's films. I recommend Norte the End of History. It's a loose adaptation of Crime and Punishment. Hypnotic long takes and operates like a Tarkovsky film set in the Philippines.
Read this for school a couple weeks ago in swedish and it blew me away. the english translation seems awesome, i might need to read it in english too. Great review!
I happened upon your channel and I have to tell you that I am completely taken by you. Thank you for what you do. You are enchanting and magnetic. I consume your insights and guzzle your voluminous range of passions. I am replete and yet desirous and wanting. I return for replenishment, resignedly insatiable.
hey, this might be a bit of a weird suggestion, but I'm quite hampered in reading by my dyslexia and I have a really cognitively demanding desk job. I was wondering if you could make a list of shorter books at some point to help get into reading a bit easier? keep up the awesome channel! :)
Presuming you won't mind the recommendation of a stranger, I really recommend Submission by Michel Houellebecq. It's contemporary, very short (One could read it in a day), and a it name drops a lot of other interesting authors. It's the book that got me back into reading about a year and a half ago. Plus, it's just a good book.
If you don’t mind more advice from strangers, here are some more excellent novels, mostly under 250 pages: -Less Than Zero - Bret Easton Ellis -Mother Night - Kurt Vonnegut JR -Bright Lights, Big City - Jay McInerney -South of the Border, West of the Sun - Haruki Murakami - Ubik - Phillip K Dick - The Orchard Keeper - Cormac McCarthy - Siddartha - Herman Hesse - Diary - Chuck Palahniuk - One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest - Ken Kesey - Different Seasons - Stephen King ( Four excellent novellas, all around 100 pages or less)
Олег Оленев I second this, there can be no discussion of modern experimentation in literature without speaking of Krasznahorkai. it makes sense to work chronologically through his oeuvre, and Satantango is the best starting point. A review of one of his works would definitely fit this channel
Hey , been following your channel for a while , there are many channels here regarding book reading but the reason that distinguishes you is that you read some "real" stuff not stupid teenagers novel with colour binding . keep uploading buddy , more happiness and strength to you ..
Have you read Hunger, by Knut Hamsun? It was one of the first novels of literary modernism, and a thrilling, twisted, disturbing read. It's from the end of the 19th century, and it's Norwegian -- the Scandinavian darkness you speak of is right there in Hunger.
Hey Cliff, greetings from Italy and my congratulations for the achievement. I was wondering if you ever heard of The Leopard by Tomasi di Lampedusa ? I feel like it might be a novel of your liking.
This review helped me so much with my book analysis. I really wish I'd read this book out of my own volition instead of just skimming through it for school since I didn't realise how good the book actually was before watching this video.
Don't worry! You can re-read Dr Glas again some time in the future! I pick it up every few years, when my mood takes me there, and it's always enjoyable (in a dark way!)
Looking pretty stylish today Sgt. Off topic but have you ever ventured into the music of John Zorn's Naked City. An experimental band that sounds like the noise inside the heads Dostoevsky and Sade.
I watched the Bergman film you mentioned, Through a Glass Darkly, a while ago. It's a good film but its a seriously outdated representation of mental illness. And if a great artist like Bergman can date so badly over 50 years, it shows what a talent this Soderberg must of have been, if he was writing convincing psychological novels 60 years earlier! I'll have to check it out.
Strangely the second time over the years you've mentioned a musician Ive only just discovered, Eric Satie. The other time you mentioned Avo Part and Tim Hecker.
Thank you/tack :) en av sveriges största författare, min personliga favorit. / One of the best Swedish authors of all time, not to mention my personal favorite.
There is a Swedish author named Bengt Ohlsson that wrote a book named Gregorius that tells the story from the Reverends perspective. You really should check it out if you liked Doctor Glas :)
I need a shorter book now I've finished the Brothers K so this is on the list.

As a heavy consumer and collector of wines (primarily vintage varietals from the Burgundy region), it pains me to see someone drink from a stemless glass. I hope that stuff you're drinking is something cheap and forgettable... Hehe.
Gay or not, they maintain the important function of keeping the temperature of the wine intact. Which is quite important, if you are appreciate the sort of attributes, that one usually enjoys when drinking wine i.e flavor, and the aromas. Wine should be served at a proper temperature, that's too obvious to even mention... Of course, if it's an 8€ bottle of some mass produced crap wine, then you might as well chug that thing from a pint for all I care. Everyone who understands wines even on a modest level, should know that you drink wine from a wine glass for a reason. And lastly; I think the adjective gay is a preferable trait; one should have a gay old time when enjoying the nice things in life.
Hey Cliff, long time fan here. I've been wondering, since your channel has grown so much since I subscribed and your fans have gotten more and more dedicated, are you afraid of developing a cult of personality? In other words, have you ever worried that, the more fans you get, it becoming less about the books and more about you? I only ask because I watched something similar happen to theneedledrop and his fans.
Life itself seems to do a hell of a lot to subdue a person. I'm a bit of a spastic but despite my young age I already find myself mellowing. Life'll do that to you quicker than you expect.
Lol, this is hard to disagree with. I remember watching one of his early vids and thinking "Yeah, this dude probably had a neitzchez phase and probably listens to Joe Rogan and Jordan Peterson". Nowadays he's definitely a lot more interesting I think.
Hey Cliff, I’m glad you liked the book. Thank you for a great ‘show’ with real contents. Hope you’ll have a smooth relocation.
As a swede, I read Doktor Glas in school, and it's truly a wonderful book! Happy to see it available in english as well
What... you liked it?

Different titles for priest have very much always been a thing, and still is.
As someone who has only read the Swedish version the translation seems really good and true to the feeling of the book
what translation?
Congrats with the 30,000 subscribers! Continue doing what you're doing and introducing us all to books that are better than food

You said it reminded you of the films of Carl Dreyer - perhaps Gertrude? Gertrude was written by Hjalmar Söderberg and adapted by Dreyer in 1965.
Magnus Karlsson HA - Never seen, totally not surprised!!! Thanks for sharing

Yes I certainly could, thanks for the suggestion.
EU is Cancer he has a playlist on his channel called "one day reads". You should check those out :)
Congrats on the 30k! Well deserved. If you've not read it, you should read The Shadow of the Wind by Carlos Ruiz Zafon. A beautiful and profound book
One of my favourite books. Great review.
