Sick trick! I came up skating in 90s during the tech revolution. Fun times. 80s mustve be awesome with all the pools n big ramps. Where skateboarding is now is awesome, perfect mix of the two. And endless skateparks everywhere. No shortage of places to skate like back in the day
People need to know this! I started skating in ‘89, by the end of the year and into ‘90 everyone looked like Hensley clones, it was awesome. This was in the middle of nowhere Indiana, I can only assume it happened everywhere else 😂 Good story and it’s a true story, this definitely propagated all those changes that were on the horizon.

What you say is completely true. Here in New Zealand everyone skated in cut-off army pants and had a buzzcut; I was no exception. This was around the time Hensley's Pro Spotlight appeared in Transworld. He set the style for everyone.
In Canada, all of my friends got chain wallets because we all wanted to be Matt Hensley

@@michaeljohn8905 I am also turning 50 in 2024. 😃I actually thought often about this Contest in Münster (Münster Monster Mastership) in 1989. I was already there in 1988 when I saw Gonz, Tommy G and a ton of other street skaters. Compared to 1988 this contest here in 1989 was split into the indoor 'Halfpipe' and this outdoor part with the streetstyle obstacles. I often thought about this specific contest as it was the lagest at the time and was hoping that there is any video recording that captured this amazing time and luckily I found it in this channel!

Matt Hensley was my inspiration back then, but the significance of this trick is ridiculously overblown.
I agree, but not just this trick. He was good but definitely overblown. Skateboarding went way down in speed and power around the time he took over, he was a big part of that. His influence with that next generation of kids who's skateboarding began with stationary kickflips cannot be denied. A lot of them are now adults and have not much interest or knowledge of skate legacies and history pre 90s.

There used to be an official video from the 1989 worldcup, I think Titus released it back then. Pretty rare footage these days.

It was a lot more than just doing this rail. Rolling up really slow hunched over to obstacles and taking dozens of tries to make something "tech" somehow and surprisingly changed the game forever.

H Street were also the first crew to bring out a video with people sliding and grinding handrails with Shackle me not in 1988.

That part of skate culture newer reached us kids in Europe. Yeah, sure you could go to a well sorted library or newsstand and find American newspapers, but no one did that at the time.

A bit more context would be great. What has changed exactly? Was this the first 50-50 down a rail? Or the first 50-50 ever? Why was there a rail anyway, when nobody skated rails at that time? Was nobody skating a rail? So many questions.
Seems so obvious but here's the nuts and bolts of it: In an era all about going fast, stylish and big, along comes Hensley, hunched over and rolling slow- but doing undeniable tricks that changed skateboarding forever.
In 1989 Hensley was one of just a handful of pros who were street-only, and most of the ‘street-style’ contests were dominated by vert pros. Munster was a big deal, and it was the image of Hensley re-inventing the approach that had the impact, not the rail as such. After Hokus Pokus came out in early 1990, Hensley was the most influential skater worldwide and a key part in how street skating took over the game.

Well, pretty spot-specific, I mean did anybody ever even again have the contraption to perform this move? I remember how Jamie Thomas raved over Hensley, watching everything we could get our hands upon in his wealthy parents' plushy living room.
Got to say, the voiceover script is absolute garbage. It's a sick trick by a sick skater. Everything else is just a string of Hollywood clichés.

This was the year that vert guys were getting the first spots in street competition… mostly because of the obstacles
The vert-riders could go down the handrail, though. Hensley could do a lien to tail on vert.
If I remember correctly ... Saw it at a demo. But true, it was hard being more technical then.

Gonz 50-50ed a handrail on video in 87. Hensley and this trick are both is sick but the seed was long planted before this. We were even trying em by 89 in Australia.
This story is not about the first handrails done. It's about a turning point in skate history.
